A wallet - You find a lost wallet. What do you do?

Imagine you find a lost wallet in the street with 200$ in it. You open it and there are also some documents of a person you know is very wealthy (e.g. a famous factory owner) What do you do? Do you return the wallet? Do you keep the money and return only the documents? Do you keep the money and don't bother to return the documents? It's your choice.

I would definitely try to return the wallet. It's the honorable thing to do.Maybe he would let me keep the money considering he is a rich bloke.

"he would let me keep the money considering he is a rich bloke." It's a smart consideration :)

The first thing I would do is see if there was any identification in the wallet. I would then contact the person. If I was not able to make contact, I would turn it in either to the police or to the people where I found it (this actually happened to me at work one time). The owner showed up looking for it later and was very surprised that everything was still there.

I obviously will locate the owner though his info in the wallet and all its contents. No doubt about it.

Though it would be rare to experience the same favor to be done to me in case I do get to lose something important, I'd still go with the first option since the situation that you have provided simply makes it plausible. If I really had no way of contacting the owner, then the outcome would certainly be obvious ^_^;

I have found wallets 3 times so far. Once I was in the post office and there was this huge wallet with lots of money in it I gave it to the lady at the counter. Once I was out shoping and I didnt even opened it took it strate to security. And once I found one while I was walking with my son and I called the person and she came and took it. I dont feel right opening other peoples wallets so if I can awoid I dont open it. On the other hand once we found abou $80 in a car park and they were spread all over the car park so it was unlikly we could find the owner so we took it.

well first of all I put my self in that position (and yes I have been there left my wallet in a shop with $1200 that I just got out of bank to pay for my husbands plane ticket) As I only delt with 1 of the people that I found their wallets I can speek about that person. He gave me $20 that I didnt want to take so he gave them to my son.

You are very lucky and honest at the same time. Has one of the owners at least given you something for gratitude?

I'd give it all in to the police and let them find the person/give it to them. Just wondering, if you personally gave it back, wouldn't it be a bit difficult to return it without the money? The owner would sort of realise? a bit embarrassing... ;)

well, you can just return the documents anonymously. If you put them in the postbox of the post office they'll find it

If we find anything lost like a wallet or loose money o anything else, we will turn it into the nearest lost and found, so that it's rightful owner has a chance of finding it. The other day my husband and I found a twenty dollar bill lying on the floor at the groccery store. We took it to lost and found right away, and continued with our shopping after.

I would return the wallet . end of story...I too have found a few wallets in my time...one I put anonymously in a mail box. one... I phoned the guy...I found it behind my apartment complex strewn to smithereens...no money in it, but every credit card in -tact.he looked at me like I was the one who had taken it! no reward Nada. I once lost a wallet...and didn't even know it until later that night some strange and gorgeous gent, called me and and said he had it. I thought it was a joke until I went to my purse....what a guy! he actually saw it fall from my purse as i was getting into my car .... he was just driving by(it was night time)...But I sped off so fast he had no time to tell/yell to me...I rewarded him a hundred bucks, there was no money in it but he was a really nice guy... One time I was at at grocery store and I got purse pocketed...thought a guy was working in the store I actually asked him where they had the RYE BREAD! he said no in an accented voice NOH!....and then lifted my wallet as I turned my back, i had foolishly left it on top of my open bag( I was in one of those happy happy moods one rarely get's, singing down the aisles to the store music!!! happy as a clam and that all instantly changed...when i got to the check stand, with around 300.00 dollars worth of food and stuff and .... it was gone...it took 12 minutes from time of the stealing to the time of canceling my cards...they (the crooks) had gone to some gas station a few blocks away(the gas station owners looked so guilty like they had a ring going on) and drained my bank account.!!!!! effing theif aliens....the cops never came,(I went in to make a report they could care less) the store manager a young punk a-hole would not let me look at the tapes(privacy acts) I was SO mad....after that it was me who had the problems... that guy took more than money, he took precious memories from me...pics of me and my son, in those old photo booths, a tiffany pen that i had kept for 17 years!(silver and slim).my mothers charm bracelet that I had taken off a few minutes earlier cuz it was catching on things....I didn't want it to fall off. I got my life back slowly, The cops even when presented with evidence of "the ring"(my husband pretended to be a lawyer and interrogated the station owners where all the money was handed over all the while... they were smirking the whole time saying; 'they bought gas' yeah, right, 400 bucks worth of gas!!!! ...we didn't know! yeah right! It is the kind of gas station where the illegals hang out to get jobs painting and building and obviously stealing...perhaps being told to do it by Husein and Husein who ran the station(that's right that's what they told us their names were...the noive)...it is on the corner of Culver blvd. and Supulveda)in case you want to stay away....it's a 76 station too. It has taken two years to get my life back and be able to cash checks etc. I was the one being punished...I tell you Los Angeles sucks right now....no one gives a ratz about any one else except themselves...WAY over crowded to say the least, more cars than people...raging drivers and desperation are everywhere. If you find a wallet turn it in...i waited for months and months hoping and praying someone would find some semblance of it and return even the shell...to no avail. Oh Rowena I know I rambled but this is the first time I have written about it.... take care okay!

I would return the whole thing. For all I know, the owner could have lost it on his way to give that money to someone who was truly in need. Doing a good deed is often its own reward.

I have to be honest with you, yes i know it would be wrong and yes i would fill guilty over it forever but i wouldnt be able to just go without taking the money, I may be wrong and if it ever happened to me be fine with keeping the money in there and thats what i would probally do, but i also know that part of me would want to take the money and go spend it on me. This is one of those things that i dont know what i really would do unless it happened to me. I dont like to steal and think its wrong but theres that part of me that thinks that he wouldnt need it or something like that. I will turn in the wallet though with or without the money, if its without and he asks about it i would tell him there wasnt any in it when i got a hold of it. LOL so wrong of me

I would return it intact. It's not my money and even if the person that dropped it is fabulously wealthy it doesn't mean that the money is any more mine. If he were to offer me a reward I might accept it - but probably not. I did hear how once some famous actress totaled some poor guy's car in Hollywood and she bought him a brand new one because she didn't want the publicity. However, It's just our duty as a member of Society to be honest. I hope that is what someone would do if I lost my wallet.

This is a tough question and I am sure many pople would answer differently. I believe in karma and think that if I took the money something bad ould happen. If I returned it there is a chance something good would happen but I wouldn't be looking for a reward. I would hate the same to happen to me.

I will trace the address and return the wallet with the money remained untouched to the factory owner. In return, I request for a position in his factory and hope he will offer me one.

If the wallet contained identification of the person who lost it, Rowena, I would feel compelled to return the money because it's the right thing to do. I would turn the entire thing over to the police.

I will return the wallet. I do not need the thing that doesn't belong to me. Yesterday, I saw a wallet drop from a girl's handbag. I tell her as soon as possible. I felt happy although she did not say "thank you" after that.

I found a wallet when I was younger, because I was a scavenger for things - always liking to find "hidden" items, it just so happened that this wallet was under a rock at the park, I ended up taking the wallet to the police who returned it to the owner. I later found out that the owner had thanked me because they were just about to go get a new license and cancel all their credit cards. It's always nice to return things that don't belong to you. I don't think I could keep the money in good faith, knowing that if it happened to me I'd be very sad that someone took my money and very impressed if they left it in there.

I've found a mobile phone once and returned it to the owner. I would have less doubt in returning things to common people than to wealthy owners (which I know 200$ are nothing) but maybe I would return it the same.
