I tried to catch my outside semi-feral cat to take her to the vet and ended up at the hospital myself for 4 hours getting an IV antibiotic drip..She got my right index finger and its wrapped in a bandage so I can't feel anything thru it making it hard to type. So, you wondering where Elic is? Well, I'll try to respond as the hand improves, but you know its going to get worse first. I hope none of you have been hurt by a pet like I was today (not for the first time I might add.) But tell me about them so I don't feel so bad!

I'm sorry kitty won. I hope you won't hold it against her. When I was a teen I tried to stop a cat fight between my baby and a neighborhood cat. I lost and my kitty bit me on the arm. I tried to ignore it but it got infected and you could watch the infection heading up my arm towards my heart. I wanted to go away that weekend and my parents wouldn't let me go until I went to a doctor. I had to get a shot and I hate needles!

I won't hold it against her, I had it coming. Its not like she didn't warn me first. I walked into the house, washed my hand, called my regular M.D. told them I was going to the hospital - since I couldn't get there before they closed - and, after having the roomie fish my phone out of my pocket (since it was in the jeans pocket on that side) I left for the hospital. I got bit about 4:30, I got home from the hospital about 9

I'm glad you went to the hospital. I always thought cat scratch fever was a made up thing, until a collegue at work got it. It was very nasty. I'm glad you got treatment. I am lucky, my cats are pretty gentle, and up till now, haven't chosen to take a bite out of me lately. Although, we haven't gone to a carrier lately....eeek.

I hope your feeling better. I use to feed some feral cats at my last house. But I could never get close enough to touch them. I also use to be a groomer and one time I was working on a cat and it scratched me pretty bad. It got infected and my whole hand and arm swelled up. I too was on antibiotics. Since then Im very cautious when approaching any cat.

Oh my. I hate to hear that my friend. I hope you heal well. I know your finger sure will get sore for a while until it starts to heal up. I am glad you let us know what happened though. I used to have a Chow, dog, and he bit my sisters hand and she had to get stitches. I got him from another owners and he had an attitude. He got so mean and they had me to put him to sleep after he bit her. He would not let anyone get near him. I found out later he had been beaten with sticks by some kids in the previous owners neighborhood and that is why she got rid of him because he turned mean. I would never have got him if I knew that.

Oh you poor thing.... About 10 years ago my sister in law called all upset she said her neighbor had a stray cat and her 4 kittens under his toolshed and he was going to shoot them..I said I'd be right there. I crawled into the crawl space with a grain bag.. Do you know how a mother cat with kittens reacts when someone comes at them.. I had no choise...The guy said we had 2 hours.. then he would shoot them and be done with it I won't go into injuries... I did catch 3 of the 4 kittens Mom and 1 kitten got away.. They went far enough away that the guy couldn't shoot them. Hon at least you weren't stupid to to crawl in a corner a feral mama cat and her kittens..Not my brightest moment! xoxoxoxoxo

I guess I'd probably never crawl under a house, porch, toolshed anyway. I'm not that brave. I guess if I were to crawl under anything, I'd meet a black widow or scorpion. I keep saying that if I didn't have bad luck I'd have no luck, I really do mean it too.

I am so sorry that you got bitten. OUCH... Hold your hand up in the air, I know it is a pain to do that but do it and it will help assure that that infection will not go to your finger, sounds silly huh??? Yep that is what they always tell me to do. Not that I EVER get bitten rotflmao. I live in the country and there is NO ambient light. The lights on the house do no good at all at night. When I moved here I was so used to being able to go to my car etc when ever I wanted as I lived in a gated community with lights everywhere. The friend that I live with had warned me... do not go outside after dark unless you are going out (as in getting in the car and leaving). Well I could not find something one night and I thought I would go to the car in the garage. As I stepped out into the black night I felt something furry by my leg and I knew it was her cat. UH OH. My mind snapped shut like a steel trap. Now I know that I could have talked him into the house or maybe even carried him. I panicked and remember my mind was closed for the evening. I grabbed him and he freaked. I could not see a thing, I grabbed his tail and he curled up far enough to grab the hand that was holding his tail and he bit down hard. I was scraming for her and she was on the phone and did not stop talking Well he bit me good. He scramed, I screamed and she has a habit of asking "what is wrong?" before coming to aid. grrrrrrrrr So I called the hospital and they said you should come in. I did not want to go in, I went to a local urgent care in the am, after holding my hand up in the air all night and I did soak it before I went to bed. They gave me an antibiotic and said... 'we have to report this to the Dept. of Health" *cringe*. The department of health called and said to isolate the cat, and they would be out in ten days to check to see if he was foaming at the mouth. We made sure our vet had his rabies vaccination records on file and that was fine. Ten days later some very sweet young gal came and saw that the cat was fine but in the meantime we were a wreck. We cleaned the house and were so nervous that they would take him away. My hand was fine after antibiotics and soaking it. Bites can be very bad and also cat scratch fever can be a real problem. I have had that too. Ouch ouch does that hurt. Feel better soon. Did hearing my story make you feel better???? Cat scratch fever is much worse and that sneaks up on you. You don't know that the scratch you have is going to be the one that gets you. It takes a long time, or at least it did with me.

Actually, I do know to hold my hand up. This certainly isn't the first time I've been hurt. I got an IV dose of antibiotics at the hospital.

It is, its really healing pretty quick, for me. Still sore, the roomie barely touched one of the wounds with the edge of a plastic bag yesterday and it really hurt, but it's not open wounds anymore, just sore.

Oh OUCH is right! I'm so sorry that your attempt to do something nice for your cat ended up as such a painful experience. My incident with a pet goes back to when our do was very young. We used the cage method to house train him and he had been in a cage while we were at a neighbor's. It was fourth of July and very late. I sent one of the chidren home to let him out and right as he got to the door, someone set off a VERY LOUD firework. It scared him and he turned on my son. My son was able to avoid being bitten and the dog ran and got under a bed. If anyone approached the bed, he growled and charged us. To this day, if he is out of the cage, he runs to a bed and hides under the bed and won't allow us near him! The only way he can be out of the cage is if we contain him to one room (the den). If a loud noise occurs, (and he considers almost anything loud) he hide behind the sofa and growls and will definitely bite if approached. It can take hours to get him back in the cage. He has jumped at me and made holes in many shirts but has yet to get my skin. He could really hurt one of us I'm certain. (he is a wirefox terrier with large canine teeth!)

The "new" roomie has a wirehaired terrier, and she is REALLY stupid. I can't believe that she loves that dog so much, she's a pretty happy dog, but thick as a brick.

Ouchy! Sounds like the cat scored all the points Elic. It sounds quite painful so I hope it doesn't take too long to clear up. My billy goat has been getting a bit bossy and greedy lately and I think I had a near miss today when I almost got between him and the nanny goat. I always share the treats out between them but he wants the lot. Lately, he tries to butt her really hard when she's helping herself to her share. She always sees him coming and dodges out of the way but the lovely lil darlin is disabled so I try to stop Pickles from being a bully. I got between them as I was distributing a bunch of cow peas to both of them. Pickles went for Tulip with me in the middle but Tulip ducked so I only received a glancing blow of Pickle's horns. He's given me a few bruises but nothing like what you're experiencing. Hope you are better soon. Hope the puss is okay too.

Those ferel cats can be very bad sometimes..We had an out break of ferel cats up in the hill country, and they were sitting out traps to catch them, once they caught them they were getting them neuterd then let them go,they were just so many of them...I was hurt by a couple of animals before..We had a pet rabbit and when i was holing her she bit me on the nose,i carry that scar even today..We also had geese at one time and i was trying to get the goose away from the dog and her claw got hung on my eyelid of all places and ripped my eyelid, the goose was not trying to hurt me she was just trying to help me get her away and she was scared...Then i had a dog once that that got caught in a piece of wood and as i was trying to free her leg she bit through my finger and left me with a hard lump in my little finger from her bite,so i have been hurt a few times..Lol

Such a ham - Tigger posing for the camera. I can rarely get a pic of him doing something cause he always spots me with my camera and immediately comes and sits in front of me to take his pic.
Sorry to hear about your misfortune with your semi-feral cat, Elic. Tigger, who is now a year old was and always will be feral in his own way. He came to me just over 4mos. old and was completely feral. I had to use very thick leather gloves if I wanted to touch or handle him. Well, once he was tame enough to allow me to hold him, I foolishly decided to give him a bath using dry cat shampoo. He literally tore my right hand up pretty bad. I didn't go to the ER for it thou. I just cleaned up all the bites he 'lovingly' bestowed upon my hand, smeared neosporene on them and then wrapped it up in gauze and elastic bandage. I kept changing the bandage and applying the cream till the bite marks were pretty much healed up. I knew he felt real bad doing what he did cause he sidled up to me soon after biting me and tried licking the wounds. We just gotta learn to be more careful when handling the feral cats is all. Now Tigg lets me give him bathes pain-free long as he can hold onto my shirt with a paw.

well my "painful experience" sure couldnt measure up to yours, but this happens frequently, my cat jumps at me and bites me when he gets annoyed. and sometimes, they could really hurt, his fangs pierce my skin and blood would come out. he scratches me too.

No, Mitten is my cat. I've had her since she was a pretty small kitten, but she's still pretty wild. No, I didn't get mad at her, I had it coming. I RICHLY deserved to get chewed!

oh yeah thats why i said my pain could never compare to yours.. btw, did you get angry or upset at that cat for causing you so much pain? is he your "legitimate" pet or a stray that just drops by your house to eat?

I have never had the misfortune to be attacked like that but when i was in my teens my little sister got hold of a semi feral cat and came into the house in tears, her arms allscratched and bloody but holding this yowling semi wild cat just the same. my mom got her to put the kitten down and doctored all her wounds but that semi wild cat got so it would follow my sister around but let any of the rest of us get close you proceeded at your own risk

That wild baby must've realized that your sister saved its life! They really do seem to understand these things.
