Do you leave the tap running?

When you brush your teeth, do you leave the tap on when you aren't using it? I always turn it off after wetting my brush at the start, and turn it back on at the end when I need to rinse my mouth. How about you?

Perhaps try turning it off before you go to deal with your kids? Assuming you don't have a rusty tap that takes lots of time and effort to turn on and off

I leave the water running. I know that this may not be the best thing to do, but I can't help it. I have a very very weak stomach. I think it looks gross if, when I spit while brushing my teeth, it just sits there in a gob in the sink. I can't stand to look at that, so I leave the water running so that when I spit, it gets rinsed away quickly and I don't have to see it.

What if you were to turn it off, and then just before you need to spit, turn it on again? That's what I do...

I guess I could try that, I never thought of it.

But then again, I spit like every 5 seconds, so I'm not sure if it would make much of a difference really......

Hello dear cellophane. I do not leave the tap running when I brush my teeth. I think that it is quite a waste of water if I leave it running. Besides, we have to pay for the water as well. You know, there are still so many places in the world where there is not enough water for them to use. And I don't think that we have the right to waste water out of this very reason. Thanks.

No, I don't. I don't wanna waste any water. Why not use a cup? =/

I don't use a cup for two main reasons: 1) I'd probably end up using the same amount of water using a cup as I would if I used my hands, this is because after using the cup, I'd wash it... and I like to wash those kind of things quite thoroughly. 2) Using my hands is easier, it's a lot easier (for me) to wash my hands than it is to wash a cup.

I used to leave the water running as a kid, but now that i'm an adult i dont. I understand that that is wasting the water and we shouldnt do that.. afterall even if you rent.. someones gotta pay the waterbill! lol. Sometimes in the summer here if tis really dry, we are told to conserve water. i always take REALLY REALLY longs showers when ever i can though!! So i guess that's my contribution to leaving the water running.

nope, I do not keep the water running when I brush my teeth. I turn it off after wetting the brush and paste, brush my teeth, turn it back on rinse my toothbrush, turn it back off - then I will follow up with some astringent mouthwash, or turn the water back on for rinsing my mouth.

Oh... i always turn the tap water off after wetting my toothbrush... this saves more on the water bill and kinda saves the environment in a little way... my teacher in grade school told this to use... so it kinda got stuck in me... and when my daughter is old enough to brush her teeth... she will be taught not to keep the tap water running...

That's good, my teacher never told me that I think... but my mother did, so same effect in the end :).

I am really bad for leaving the water running the whole time I am brushing my teeth. I just don't think to turn it off and my hubby gets mad at me for leaving it running. I put my tooth brush under the water often while I am brushing and then back into my mouth to brush some more. This way when I rinse I don't have much toothpaste left in my mouth to rinse. I know all of the stuff about water shortage and wasting but I just like it that way, so I guess I'm not a good citizen by turning it off inbetween.

Interesting method... I might try that actually, only, I'd turn off the tap in between rinsing the tooth brush

i'm the same as you. if i leave it running, i'll just be wasting water and that's not good here. we need to pay the bills and although they're cut off automatically from my hubby's salary, it still makes a difference. in fact, i also 'scold' my hubby and son if i feel that they're wasting a tad too much water. grins we must ingrain good behaviour from young. if not, it'll be tough for them when they grow older.

Every little bit counts in the long run. And it's true, values and (good) habits are best learnt when young, great job! :)

I am totally guilty of leaving the tap running when I brush my teeth. I often think that I should do like you do and shut it off and then turn it back on when I need to rinse my mouth, but... I think it's just a habit that I can't break. With today's environmental issues I guess that I should try harder to break it.

I think you should definitely give it a go , but if you really can't, then I guess it isn't too bad a problem unless you experience a water shortage...

Like you, I turn the water on to wet my brush. Then turn it off. When I'm ready to rinse turn it back on. No need to waste the water and run up the water bill.

I don't let the faucet running while brushing my teeth. Water is too precious to be wasted. As shown in various tv information campaign, there is too much water wasted through this practice of letting water run while brushing teeth. As a way of helping the environment and make a little savings as well, I never let the water run while brushing and keep the all faucets closed when not in use.

That's good, I haven't seen nor heard of a tv campaign about saving water that way, but I'm sure it's doing its job well.

I do turn it off for a while, it's also consuming our bills so I have to close the faucet. But worrying about the bills or not, I guess that's one way of conserving natural resources. I don't use any cup or glass when brushing my teeth, I just put my hands and gather water straight from the running faucet then rinse my mouth..

I do the same thing when I rinse my mouth, it's a lot easier than using a cup or other tool, and you can use as much water as you need right there and then.

Not usually. I turn it on to wet my toothbrush, turn it off and put the paste on my brush. Then, I start brushing my teeth and don't pay attention to the faucet until it comes time to rinse. Sometimes I'll leave the faucet on for a few seconds when I'm rinsing, but otherwise I do not leave it on. Wastes too much water.

Guess it's easier to do that if you're feeling tired/lazy... or if it's hard to turn your tap on and off (rust, etc)...

I usually don't turn the water on until I need to rinse. I can't see wasting all that water. I don't have to pay any more if I use a lot or not, but there are some places that don't have enough so I don't waste it either way.

I usually leave it running. Leaving water running in general is sometimes an issue for me...I'll turn it on full blast on hot so it'll heat up before I wash up and I'll get distracted by something and leave steaming hot water running for ages...oops!

That's the reason why I tend to stand there and wait for the water to heat up, but then again it doesn't take that long for my water to become warm/hot.
