Great News: Uh, For A Change~~LOL

Back in November one of my MyLot friends, Oreo told me about how she got an article published for the on-line "e-zine" MedHunters, which is a medically based magazine. She had written an article for them then didn't hear in ages, then bingo got the good news that her article had been accepted and would be published (one can see her article there). So on November 13 of last year I tried my hand at it and sent an article about the Hipaa Privacy Laws and if they were really a help or hindrance to a patient's care and gave the example of what I went through with my mother. I had believed she could have gotten a lot better "clinical" care both medically and for her emotional problems, but while seeing a psychiatrist for five years (and who I thought was an a-hole and did noting for her) she never signed proxy to allow me an intervention in her care...not until the last few months of her life...by then it was too little too late to help her. So sent this article to MedHunters. Now Oreo told me that there was usually a long wait before one heard of anything, but when the months zoomed by, figured, oh, well, maybe they're not interested. Then I got an email only the other day and was bowled over...yes, they were very much interested in the article and wondered if it were still available to them for publication..so of course I emailed back and said yes,...the editor then sent me an edited version of my original...they had to chop about 1,100 words (uh yes it WAS a long article) and they needed my "formal" approval before doing anything about it, so of course I said no problem..so today I got a contract to sign, which I did and I scanned it, then sent it back as a PDF file (so much better than mailing as they are in Ontario)--but the BEST news of all...they are going to pay me $150.00 for the article and it was like, holy moly! This sure beats Associated Content any day where one gets maybe $3.00 per article.. So now I'm scratching my head thinking of other articles to write.. Okay to turn this into a discussion. Did you ever do a project, write an article or something and hoped it would be accepted...then months and months passed and didn't hear of anything and figured, oh, well, maybe they didn't accept it or wanted to use it and then t your great surprise you got a notice that it was accepted and going to be published or used??

Not exactly... but I did get called for a job interview at a place I had apparently applied to. Thing was, I did not remember applying for it, nor did I have any record of applying there. But I did end up getting the job and stayed there for almost four years.

You really should put your stories about Gissi into book form...I have the Writer's Market directory that has listings of publishers to send manuscripts...as I hope to eventually get my books I'm writing (though not in awhile) published...there are other places one can make a book form of stories..like Lulu.com or pola pointed this place to me http://www.blurb.com/ Something like that could be a start anyway??

I have never been paid anything for the things thatI have had published....not that I have written anything worth getting paid for either...lol. I am not much of a writer, I just dabble with different mediums. But congrats to you I'm sure that will be a big help to you.

My surprise is in a different field. Years ago I used to crochet a lot of various different items. This year I crochet a baby blanket and an afghan for gifts. My friends you received the afghan suggest I should try to sell my work. As I find crocheting not only relaxes me but if I did it while watching TV I would not feel kind of guilty just wasting my time. So I made one afghan and put it for sale on Ebay and wonders of wonders it sold within a couple of day, then the same thing with two more. I am now working of my 4th Afghan as I feel really encouraged and happy to make a few dollars doing something I enjoy.

back when I used to send stories to fanzines (no pay) I knew that some take a long time to be published. well, I had known a story was going to be published and was waiting for my contributors copy of the zine when one showed up and it WASN'T the one I was waiting on! It was one I had submitted to over a year before & forgotten all about!

That is the one bummer...the waiting..I realize why as all these places must get flooded with stories or articles..but yikes you waited a year for the contributor's copy??

I wouldn't say most fanzines get flooded with stuff. And since they are/were put out by the sweat of the people and have to be printed up front with their money they frequently took quite a while to get printed. I was actually quite excited to discover the zine, I had even forgotten about the story!

No, I have not ever done anything like that, but I would love to give it a try. Is there anything special you do to submit to e-zines? It sounds like this will more than make up for the difficulties with the checking account, or at least will break even and keep you out of the hole. WowI am so jealous. I hope things just keep getting better for you.

I've written articles for places like Helium and Gather, and also Associated Content and only last year...I'm actually used to writing fiction so writing articles is so different, but challenging. I actually did finish another article and plan to submit to them as well, but I'm also vowing to myself to write a little bit of my fiction as well and everyday from now on...have three novels in the works that I haven't touched in I don't know how long..so I might be more MIA from here As far as submitting to e-zines...most of course you can submit on-line...some places will have a "form" that you rattle out your info (contact) maybe a bit of a bio..then a space to paste in your article or story into the article/story area (it's better to write out the article/story in your processor then copy it and paste, rather than typing the whole thing out again)...OR...some places prefer that you copy/paste the article/story in the body of an email--each ezine always has its own guidelines And yes, this certainly will help quite a bit with my checking account

That's pretty good pay for a 1000 - odd word article Pye. Congratulations I've had one or two articles published, but it was quite a long time ago and I can't remember how long they took to get back to me with an acceptance. I do know that I never got paid that much

First of all, Congratulations on the article! The only thing I could think of that I did and forgot about were surveys. I did a bunch of surveys for MyView and forgot all about them. I stopped doing them because I just figured they didn't pay. A few months later I kept getting a bunch of two and three dollar deposits into my paypal. I had no idea where they were coming from! I did a little research and found out. They have changed their payment policies now, but I did start doing surveys for them again after I got paid. I will have to tell my husband about MedHunters. Medicine is his specialty. I already have a couple of ideas for articles that he could write.
