Glasses or contact lenses?

March 14, 2008 6:54am CST
Oh no.. I have been told that I will need to wear glasses for reading... My question to all my lotters is would you suggest I get glasses, or contact lenses,I would like to go for contact lenses because then no one would know that I need glasses, but I am a bit of a girly when it comes to putting anything in my eyes..but I am open to persuasion so if any one of you mylotters want to tell me (persuade me) how easy it is to use contacts please let me know. Thanks have a great weekend.

The choice of whether to wear glasses or contact lenses depends a great deal on your personality, environment, and the kind of correction your eyes need. I have worn both and had absolutely no problem with the contact lenses, even in the early days when they required much more care than they do now. However, if the only correction you need is for reading, you would probably be happier with regular glasses, as in my view, contacts are best for people who wear them all of the time. Unlike regular lenses, contacts have to be completely sterilized (or disposed of) each time you take them out. Contacts are really easy to use in most situations and there is nothing to be squeamish about but it is a bit of a bother to have to buy the equipment and little bottles of solution and keep disinfecting them all of the time. Disposables are great, but there is still a little maintenance. However, if there is high wind or a lot of dust or smoke in your environment, then you probably don't want contacts either.

Hmm, you've got a point about dust and smoke although there's one smoky environment where contacts might be preferable. Firefighters need a good seal on their breathing masks, and you're not going to get that with glasses.

Oh, yes, you are so right about some trades making a difference. One job I had required constant use of an electronic microscope and I could not have managed that without contact lenses--for the same reason. Now you have me wondering about all the firefighters and how that works out for them. The other thing is that in some circumstances glasses steam up, whereas contact lenses, of course, do not. Contacts are great for sports, too, except that once I was playing baseball and a lens popped out. That was back when a single pair of lenses was quite expensive, so the game had to stop just for me. How embarrassing.

I wear glasses now and I used to wear contact lenses, for about 20 years. I found with contact lenses it was too hard to read anyways so I would take them out and wear my glasses. I loved my contacts but I can't wear them anymore since I wore them for so long. My eye doctor advised me to not wear them anymore because I got too much protein build up that grew on my eyes and can only be removed with surgery. So I just don't wear them anymore and everything is fine with them. Contact lenses are easy to put in and after about one week you would get used to it and it would become easier.

Personally I'd be lost without my contacts but then I'm blind as a bat. I have to correction all time. I can't do anything without them. If you only need them for reading then to be honest I think contacts would be a waste for you. However if you have to wear them all the time, including for driving, then it might be something to check into. I love having them and not having to deal with glasses that can slip and slide or get scratched up. I don't have any problem usually putting my contacts in. I also use the type I can sleep in, so I don't have to take them in and out every day. That can make a big difference as well. I would suggest talking with your eye doctor about this. Find out what he says on the issue and if he recommends them. Go from there. Also if he recommends them you usually have to try some on there and you'll see if it's something you can tolerate or not.

I think if you only need glasses for reading, your going to have to go with glasses rather than contacts.

I don't think I could ever wear contacts. I don't wear glasses so if I had to wear them all the time I'm sure that might change my opinion somewhat. I'm thankful I don't have to wear glasses. I pray I never have to. I have this horrible fear of putting anything into my eye. I can't even watch someone else touch there eye or put contacts in I get so faint watching them!

I like to wear both (but not at the same time). I like to wear glasses when I'm relaxing at home or doing activities that are so stressful. I wear contacts when I am participating in sports or doing an activity that involves a lot of concentration. Contacts are not easy to put in at first. I have big eyes and I had to pull both eye lids (top & bottom) open just to get them in. It took me a couple of trys before I got used to it. I learned that no one else was going to put those contacts in my eye for me.

God has made all the things so perfect and each and every part is so essential that we can not live or it is hard to live without any part. so i think as for as eyes are concerned we see this colorful life with the helo of eyes.and we have to take care of them. and as foir as i think contact lenses are good as compare to the Glasses.

I am using contact lens. I used to wear glasses but I fall asleep and break them...and sometimes it's a hassle like when you have to go to somewhere where there is steam it fogs your glasses. I won't look nerdy with glasses as well. I think contacts are better than glasses though through my experience. You just have to adjust to it since it will be your first time to use one. It's a bit irritating in the eyes at 1st but when you get the hang of it, it's ok.

I wish I could use contact lenses and I can't because my eyes won't let me!! I need bifocals and once I got to that stage I had to go back to my glasses and it wasn't fun. I like my contacts so much better and putting them in and out was not a problem at all to me. It got easier the more I wore them and I could even take naps in them and they weren't a problem. I started wearing glasses when I was 9 years old so when I got contacts sometime in my 30's it was like a gift. I think you should give them a try because they aren't all that difficult to wear and they make them better all the time. Go for it!! Be glad that you can.

If you just need them for reading, you can pick up reading glasses anywhere and they're very inexpensive. I bought 4 pairs at the dollar store so I could have a pair in my purse, one in the living room, one in the bedroom and a spare. I've worn contacts (soft lens) before and while I'm not squeamish, they dried out my eyes pretty badly and were very uncomfortable. It's very easy to pop the reading glasses on and off. Not so easy to take contacts in and out.

Just for reading, glasses would probably be best but it's really up to you. I have worn glasses most of my life and for a short time I wore contacts. I have always had a hard time even putting eye drops in my eyes so was a little worried about putting in contact lenses. I would go practice at the eye doctor every day for 30 minutes until I could get them in and out with very little problem. I think it took me 3 or 4 days lol. Then I had to give up the contact lenses because my eyes were just too dry to wear them. My eyes would swell and everything would be hazy. I will just stick to my glasses.

I think wearing glasses is good as it is a conventional method. Most eye specialist recommend for glass instead of contact lenses. There is a merit & demerit. contact lense is a foreign particle and it may cause problem to they eye if it is not suited. Ladies are preferred contact lenses for their beauty .In my opinion in the long run contact lenses may harm. pkc3000

Frankly, if all you need them for is reading, go with reading glasses. They're cheaper, you can get them without a prescription, and you don't need sterile technique to use them. Now, if you need vision correction all the time, like I do, contacts have some advantages like aesthetics, better depth perception, better peripheral vision and the ability to not have your vision screwed up by rain. They also don't fog or collect grease spatters. You still need sterile technique though. I wore contacts for a while, but stopped when maintaining sterile technique became impractical. Now I have presbyopia (basically "old eyes") and need a distance prescription and a close up prescription. I can resume the sterile technique, but monovision* lenses don't appeal. I'm wondering now if it might be possible to get a distance only prescription for contacts and use reading glasses for close up. Oh, and please don't use terms like "girly." They have decidedly sexist connotations. "Wuss" and "wimp" are nicely gender neutral terms. *Monovision: basically you use one eye at a time (hence "mono") because one contact is your distance prescription and the other is your close up prescription. There went the depth perception advantage, and I don't know how well I'd adjust.

I wear glasses, but I've also tried contact lenses, and I prefer the glasses for comfort. They're a lot easier to take on and off for one thing, and my eyes are easily irritated. I'd suggest you find an optician that will allow you to try contact lenses on a free trial to see how you find them before making a permanent decision. A good pair of glasses can be quite pricey.

I use both--contact lenses and glasses. If it's only for reading, I suggest you get reading glasses. It's cheaper and it's much more practical. It's up to you if you want it since you're a girly type of person. However, if you choose to use contact lenses, I think you might find it hard at first. I was anxious the first time I tried it but I eventually got accustomed to it. I got used with the daily ritual of putting it on. But, irritations do exist and I warn you with that. I got a cornea scar three months ago and it was terrible! I advise you acquire glasses when you use contact lenses. Of course, it's expensive to purchase contact lenses.

I have not use contacts.I use only glasses.i think glasses are better because they do not touch the eye.but when you put contacts there is a chance of infection getting into the eye.my sister wears contacts uptill now nothing happened to her eyes.its upto you what you feel comfortable with.
14 Mar 08
What does it matter if anyone knows, that you need glasses. Contact lenses are easy to loose, especially if they come lose, and there is a slight chance of infection. If you're worried about your appearance, I think you'd look fine. I say that in all confidence because no girl, that I've seen, looks crappy with glasses. Of course, you may be the exception but I seiously doubt it.

Contact lenses are very easy to use. Of course you have to learn first, but after a couple of days (if even that) you'll be comfortable putting them in and taking them out. But if you only need glasses for reading maybe you should go with the glasses.

Hi. I don't know about contacts for reading. I could see it if you needed them for all the time, but if it is only for reading it might be more trouble than it's worth. If you have to wear glasses all the time (both near and far), then it would be good. When I got my last contacts, they said I could go for expensive ones that were bifocal or the regular ones and get reading glasses or only wear one. I found it fairly easy most of the time to put them in, but I seldom do it right now. They tell me not to leave them in over night so most of the time I don't wear them at all. Have a great weekend!!!
