How do you know whether or not to buy a house?

Being a young couple, my husband and I aren't sure how to go about buying a house, or if we even should. We are still unsure of our career paths at the moment, trying to decide what we'd really like to do. We are currently living with other family members while we pay off some college debt and try to get things going in the right direction. However, we want to move out within the next year, and we are unsure if we should buy a house or rent an apartment. I feel that renting is a waste of money, but he doesn't want to be tied down to a house if we don't know we're going to live there for the next 20 years. So we are unsure as to what we should do. It's slightly frustrating because neither of us really knows what our ultimate career path is going to be, whether I'm going to be in accounting for the rest of my life, or whether we'll end up learning a language good enough to be translators. It's all so up in the air right now and we feel like there are so many options on what to do we don't know which direction to go, so we just stay still. Does anyone know how to help us?!

I would say wait until you know for sure what your work is and if you will settle in that area for at least 5 yrs. if you can do that then I would say buy a house. For the time being work on a plan for your future work. Right now and probably for the next few years will a great time to get a good deal on a house but you will need a down payment and some extra money saved before buying that house.

I think it would be a good idea to wait and see what you are planning to do with your life first. After that, here are some links you can look into on buying a home. AmeriDream helps with down payment assistance. The FHA site has lots of useful information to look into before making that big decision. They have mortgage calculators to help you figure out what you can actually afford. Good luck in making your decision. www.ameridream.org www.fha.com
