So I was placed on a Temp assignement yesterday to answer phones. I got there and the person left me one thing to do and that was to file. I finsh that in about an hour and half (I took my time.) And then there was nothing to do but wait for the phone to ring. I took a book to read and started to read. My problem is that I normally read before I go to bed so I was getting really tired. I couldnt get on the computer and do anything so I just sat there. I started to dose off and decided I needed to get up and walk around. For the last four hours of the day I walked the office as much as I could. What would you have done if you were in my shoes?

I was working with an automotive company several years ago and I was the receptionist. Answering the phones, filing, paying bills etc. I worked there for two weeks and each day I went in I would bring something for me to do. I was so bored and there was nothing ever to do. I always had the filing and everything done within an hour. (I took my sweet time as well). I had to quit the job because I was too bored and was always falling asleep. I am the type of person if I have nothing to do I get bored and become irrated that I don't want to do it anymore.

Thats a good question. I would probably have done the same thing you did but thats not too helpful is it? I worked the night shift in our local hospital years back on the geriatric floor and the charge nurse did all the shots so all I had to do was chart and give meds at certain hours plus take vitals once during the shift. I did do a lot of readingin between things.

I cant imagine what it would be like at night. I am a night person so that might not be as bad. But still it is horrible when there is not enough work for you to do. Are you working the day shift now? Are you still working at the hospital?

I had a temp job where I did data entry. I would often finished early, but I wasn't allowed to leave until the supervisor said I could. But, the problem was that the supervisor left over an hour before I did. And, I never knew if I was going to be done early or not. So, I would just sit there and do nothing for an hour or two. I would ask around for other work, but half the office would be gone and no one had anything. The thing is, I was worried about someone complaining to the agency that I wasn't working. I tried to get them to adjust my hours, but they said they couldn't. So, I was in a catch 22 situation there.

The agency said something about those being the hours that they agreed to when I started working there or something like that.

That doesnt make sense why they wouldnt adjust your hours. How do they know that you were actually doing work when the mngr left? I just dont understand companies that do that. I did a temp job for three days. The person that I was working for left really early two out of the three days. There was nobody there to make sure I was doing my job or that I was there till the end of the day. She signed my time card 2 hours before I was supposed to leave. Are these people that trusting? I wouldnt be. Not that I took advantage of it but there are plenty of people out there that do.

I've been where you are. It's awful to have nothing to do at work but just stand or sit there and wait for something to do. In those situations I usually try to think, find some busy work (cleaning or like) or even sit down and write out some stuff. A letter, my thoughts, a song, a poem, you name it. Hope that helps.

But what if your salary is rather low for your simple work that you even can not make a living? I am in this situation now:( Maybe I am too emotional to stay here just for he is a good boss as a man! Reading the news, chating with my freind all day……,so boring!

Most of the s/w engg would not have anything to do most of the times. I'm one of them.

I am sorry to hear that. I hope that you can find something that will keep you challenged.

I've been that awful situation before. It's hard to pretend working (to justify the consultant fee) while there are absolutely no work at all. Reading books and surfing the net were not allowed in my situation. My experience will be: 1) Don't look at the clock. The more anxious you are, the more slowly the clock will move. 2) Try to learn anything from your company, the organization, the nature of its business, history and so on. you may find something interesting (e.g. one board member is a former senator, etc). 3) I don't know what the manager thinks about reading your own books at work. Try not showing people that you are doing non work-related things.

Being somewhere and not being able to pick up a book or go on the net I would for sure fall asleep. Thank goodness it was only a one day job. Otherwise I would be PULLING my hair out of my head. I CANT sit around and do nothing at a job it would drive me crazy.

This has happened to me when I was doing administrative functions. I was about to give up just looking for on the Internet then. Good thing I got a good break and became so darn busy that I had to come in at 7am and go home at 2am. At the moment, I know now what to do when there is not work. myLot! Haha. Isn't it obvious I'm doing much of that right now. So, there.

That sounds a little like my old job. The usual tasks tended to be done quickly and then the rest wasn't much of anything outside of answering phonecalls. I didn't have the luxery of a book or anything though, so I tended just to have a look at the company's databases and documents, seeing what possible improvements I could make. Anything to avoid total boredom.

I also have the same problem with you, but now its solved, when one of my friend introduce this site mylot.com, i eventually got the interest of joining, and now, i dont have to pressure myself thinking what to do with my spare time and my idle time at work, i just go to the site mylot.com and so there.. you will just find yourself enjoying the discussion without noticing your time.
