How do you celebrate Easter

On the Saturday morning we boil eggs and let them cool so they are ready to be painted and decorated in the afternoon/evening before bed! The kids love to roll their eggs down a hill until the shell cracks and they can start to eat them, although Niamh usually put so many layers of paint on hers that I often worry she will never be able to crack the shell even if she used a jackhammer! lol If it is wet and cold (it usually is , we do live in Scotland after all) then we resort to rolling the eggs down the stairs, that can leave a BIG mess to be cleaned up but at least the children don't get too disappointed. We usually have a quiet day , well maybe not quiet as they kids are so hyped up with eating chocolate eggs! Usually there is chicken for dinner, I don't know why we eat chicken it just seems to be one of those traditions you follow even though you are not sure why! lol Anyway I wondered what , if anything all you lovely people in mylot do to celebrate Easter? xxx

Firstly and foremost, I celebrate Ostara. This always falls on 21st March, at Spring Equinox. The Christians, for whatever reason, used these traditions in a similar way, but called them Easter. So, as the rest of my family are basically Christians, I have a double celebration normally. I celebrate Ostara as a time of rebirth and new beginnings, so eggs are prominent, as are hares (an animal of the goddess Ostara/Eostre), Spring Flowers, the Mother Earth and the God of Fire, (Sun God). We paint eggs, gather flowers, walk in the countryside, taking in the new life, and plant seeds to represent our new beginnings/growth. At Easter, I celebrate with the kids... I like to show my respect for their beliefs too. We colour eggs in the same manner, gather flowers and chocolate eggs are given, as a representation of new life/growth. I like to eat Lamb at Easter because it's symbolic, but I guess Chicken is too... after all, from whence came the egg? Brightest Blessings for a very Happy Easter, my dear friend. xxxx

Darkwing honey you know I love to hear about your beliefs and celebrations - especially when you and your family can combine celebrations while still respecting the others faiths! I do remember a little about Ostara from last year but thank you for filling in some more of the details! I hope that you and your family have a wonderful Ostara?easter celebratioon! ps Don't you think that the words originate from the same place - they sound very similar! Tessah thank you for contributing! I hope the 'Easter Bunny@ is good to your daughter and that she finds much new life to chat about in your garden! xx

we celebrate Ostara in this house as well. eggs are dyed the day before and etched with runes for health and well being, and my husband and i err "the easter bunny" ;cough; hides them and little gifts throughout the yard. while hunting for the shiny presents and such, the yard is also inspected to find the new flowers sprouting up. my litle girl spends a good hour looking for whats come to life and chit chattering to the birds. we dont have a "traditional" dinner, this year im making ham simply because we havent had it in a while.

That sounds like so much fun mummymo. We don't really celebrate Easter but last year we decided to hide Easter Eggs all around the house, and my husband drew a map and had my son go looking for them. He had a lot of fun doing that. I might boil some up and have a day of painting them with him. He loves painting!

I remember once when I painted a few faces on the eggs, they became my friends for awhile and we talked alot about the differences between free range eggs and crusty ostrich eggs, we had a right good laugh down at the pub, but the eggs didn't really like doing karaoke so I had to do it, singing crocodile shoes, then they was stolen by an evil looking tramp man who hadn't eaten anything for 12 weeks, he made an omlette out of their faces with the shell all crumbling....it was a sad day for anyone who knew eggbert and his eggy friends,, I shall miss them R.I.P Eggy!

Painting eggs is so much fun sweety I am sure you will both enjoy it! We paint lots and sometimes we even make heads out of them by staining them in tea and then adding wool or string for hair and painting on faces! Have a good weekend! xxx

I don't. unless buying chocolate eggs when they get reduced after the event counts as celebrating. I celebrate Ostara, though, but that's been and gone.

Well, being that we have little money for all of the extras for Easter and I have taught my boys that Easter is about Jesus returning to heaven after dieing for us, I will cook a big meal with a small ham and then veggies and things that I have here to make a dinner with. I also told them that spending time with just family that day is very important also.

That is so true - the fun and sweets are fine as long as the kids know why! You know I always had faith but it was my children who took me to church - their choice, what THEY wanted! xxx

Well kaysue first I would like to say a great big welcome to mylot! Well done for teaching your children what is important in life! i do try with my kids although I am not always successful! My kids also know what easter is all about and that is what they celebrate - although a lot of pleasure is taken from chocolate, especially so for my 14 year old son as he gave up chocolate for lent! Family time is a wonderful thing and I hope you all have a really happy Easter! xxx

Thank you so much. I know there are parents that focus on the bunny and the eggs, but, they also need to teach the children about the reason we celebrate. When mine were younger, we did do the baskets and egg hunts, but also stressed why the celebration is happening. All any parent can do is to try to teach them the right way in life. My kids don't need the candy anymore. Have an enjoyable Easter.

My family and I usually attend the prossesion of saints but we don't walk with it. Usually it happens and starts at around 4 in the morning. We just go directly to the church where all people gather and attend the mass. After that, we go home and have lunch together with whole family. Easter egg hunting is not really applicable in our town. People are kill joy or corny over there hahahah..

My two wonderful friends sprung a surprise on me, they have booked and paid for the weekend at my beloved retreat by the Ocean for Easter! I've got my train ticket and I go Friday morning and return Monday with them. I can't wait. For Sunday we are having a big roast dinner, either beef or pork with all the trimmings and roast tatties! YUMMMMMMMM! I got some money from mum instead of an Easter Egg to spend when I'm down there. I usually get a welcome Easter Egg from my neighbour but I'm not too fussed. Have a wonderful Easter and I'll be watching you all on the cam ;0) Hope the Easter bunny is good to you too xxxxx

I always get together with my family. I also like to see my neice and nephew hut for easter eggs. They are still young. My neice is 5 and my nephew is only 2 so they have to have help looking for their eggs. it's still neat to watch them.

I do absolutely nothing to celebrate Easter. I was brought up Catholic but even as a child nothing special happed except that we got a chocolate egg. Now I am too old for an egg and I am on this daft diet that means that I can't eat any chocolate at all. I wonder if you eat chicken because those little fluffy yellow chicks represent Easter. Lol.
@mummymo (23706)
20 Mar 08
Aww poor claire - I HATE restrictive diets! I wasn't 'churchy' at all as a child but I am involved in our church now although even before I joined the church I celebrated Easter big style! i have never bought my kids Easter Eggs - I always buy them gifts! This year my eldest is getting a wireless adapter for his pc and my daughter is getting a Bratz vanity case and makeup - they still get tonnes of chocolate eggs from other people! Have a great weekend ! xxx
