So as of April 1st. minimum wage is going up once again, to $10.00. I can't believe it's so much! When I first started working when I was 15 it was $5.00 and that was only 10 years ago! Then again it was alot less befor that for some people. I think that when minimum wage goes up everyone should get a wage increase because it's not fair to some people who have a physically had labor job and only get payed $3 more (if that) then a younge 16 year old who is just stating there very first job and getting payed $10! Tell me people what you think about this. If you agree with me or am I just being a petty person?

i think minimum wage is a dumb idea. if you raise what employers have to pay their employees, then they lose money. to make up for that money loss, they charge more for their goods and services. so people have to spend more to get the same things. so even if you make more from minimum wage, its only going to balance out with the resulting price increases.

This is a great post, but I'm sorry to say your information is inaccurate. That is unless you are talking about a particular state. It may be higher in some states. As of for the whole United States the minimum wage is $5.85 until July of 2008 when it goes up to $6.55. I got this information by googling minimum wage and going to www.dol.gov/esa/whd/flsa/ Please make sure your information is correct next time please.

When I was 15 working fast food, I had to lie and say I was 16. Back then, minimum wage was $1.75 an hour, early 70's.

Hello Kym, and welcome to myLot. For your very first discussion, you've brought back memories of when I had my first job and how much minimum wage was: $4.25. That was, oh gosh, 20 years ago! I'm -that- old? Anywho, if the minimum wage is almost doubled that, I guess it would match with the gas prices as well. What's really fair? People who have committed murder, rape and other such heinous crimes get several years in jail and then probation while those whom have done crimes (perhaps due to stress or despiration to feed family, pay bills) get more time. I'm finding out right now how much a day laborer would get paid an hour...when I find that out I'll be able to see how much injustice there is in this world.

I doubt you will be much better off once your wage rate changes as obviously the more you earn then the higher the tax bracket you will be in.

Wow! Is it really that high now?! When I first started working, I think the minimum wage was something like $3.32 an hour or something like that. And, I think student workers got less than that. It was that low for a very long time. I remember when getting paid $5 an hour was considered good pay. And, it wasn't too long ago that I was getting $10 an hour and considered that very good pay. I can't believe the minimum is that high now.

Minimum wage was 4.75 or 4.85 when I started working like 10 years ago. I cannot believe it would go up that high. I do think everyone should get some kind of increase, in tiers of money amounts.. depending on how much people make. I think if they make 30-40 dollars an hour, of course their pay shouldnt be increased.. but you catch my drift.

Hi kym, I live in Canada too, and know that the minimum wage varies from one province to another. I've often thought that it should be the same for the whole country. I think that $10.00 an hour is fair, but I know it's less than that in some parts of the country. I'm not complaining though, I still think that we live is the best country in the world. Blessings.

I come from a country where there is no minimum wage. 20 years ago, people used to earn $250 per month doing heavy labour. Add that with allowances and overtime, they would probably take home around $400. Nowadays, people doing the same job would earn about $450 plus allowances and overtime, around $700. That's a 75% increase in earnings in 20 years. About 3.5% per year. If you consider that prices of goods have gone up by about 300% in that 20 years, it might be much better to ave a minimum wage.
