Remembering myLotter by their avatars

Guys, do you tend to remember myLotter by their avatars or their names? I for one most of the time just look at their avatars first before remembering their names if I constantly see them here in myLot. Sometimes, there's even a tendency for me to forget who they are when they change their avatars haha... I'll just think, "hey! that name seems familiar..."

I'm new here and was wondering how to get an avatar as they all look great ... I am using the name whiteheron as the white heron, too me, is a beautiful bird and looks like the soul in flight. I thought of using a lotus or an image of a white heron in flight... wondering how to have it show next to my name. I would appreciate any help you can give me. I notice the name of the person who writes and wish often that I could see it again when I am responding to comments made about my posts. I then notice the avatars but my computer is old (1998) and the monitor that I purchased for cheap when my old monitor blew out has a display that is a ittle dark, even with maximum brightness adjustment, so the photos used for avitars do not always come out as clearly as I would wish. It is for this reason that I would look at the name more than the avatars.

I am pretty sure that's for your website, like your blog perhaps. I haven't use that myself as I don't have a blog or anything, but I am 99.9% sure it's not a link for your picture. Haha...

Thanks for the information regarding the Avatar... I love this white heron, or some say, "great white egret" in flight. I got it from a website that said it was free to use. If I wanted to list the website of the photo somewhere, how would I do it? And is there any way to link to the photo? I was not sure if the website underneath the avatar was for me or for the photo so I left that part blank until I could get more information from you. I appreciate your help.

Oh no, I just changed my avatar. I hope you can still remember me. hehe. I'm going to change my avatar again in a day or two, I'm still looking for the right picture. I really don't want to use this, because it's my avatar in another site, one that's more personal. I've changed my previous one because my sister says it was incomprehensible. lol I remember mylotters by their avatars more than their names. But there are times I remember names without the image. There was one instance that I was taking a exam in History of Architecture class, and a name just popped in my head. It sounded so much like an architectural term, and it drove me crazy trying to place it. If only I've memorized the avatar with the name, it would have been easier to place. lol. I do remember avatar with names though. But it's only a handful.

It depends on how much I've talked to them, and what the avatar is. To be honest, I remember anime avatars or avatars that are artwork or clever sayings more easily than ones that are pictures of the people themselves. Names I remember right away if I think they are clever or interesting, or if the person really makes an impact on me, but otherwise it could take me a while to really learn someone's username.

Lecanis, I remember you previously because of your avatar... haha. If I remember correctly, I think I responded to one of your discussion about being bi or something.

I remember avatars more than the name. I have few names I am familiar with already but still, the avatars are what makes me remember most. Like for example the name, "maddysmommy", I think she got a new avatar. It's good that I got familiar with her name. Sometimes, it's just letting go what you are used to seeing. We cannot control change. If it's for the better, let's celebrate and let go!

Well, yes, but we cannot prevent their choice. As long as we have them to talk about anything here, let's put the fun forward.

True, haha... my parents used to tell me that I am the type of person who hates change. Probably that could be one of the reasons why I don't like myLotters suddenly changing their avatars, well... it's just that the more they change their avatars... the less I could remember/know them if I am not yet familiar with them.

A little bit of both I think. I paid attention to people's avatars more when I first started posting. Then I realized that not only do some people change their avatars frequently; some people have the same avatar. After that I tried to pay more attention to the name of the user so I didn't get thrown off if they changed avatars. I have never changed mine, I am not sure I will. I am partial to it.

Actually, a good and unique avatar also helps remember their names. For example, I won't forget that reddish avatar of yours with a really beautiful picture of you in it, if that's you that is... haha... and because of that I also can remember your name easily as moneyandgc, someone who had responded to 2 of my discussions. Someone who also have a beautiful daughter to take care of. :D I think same avatars happens when people just get theirs on the net. Those avatars for me, are almost the same as not having an avatar at all. What I mean is... for me, an avatar serve as a trademark to each person here in myLot.

well there are some mylotters who are having some really good avatars. you see some nice avatars in the discussion forums and the blog sites. but this trend is picking up in mylot forum too. ya, i too do remember some of the members of mylot community by the avatars that they have. some colourfuly crafted gifs. there are some very cool ones you could check them out
• Philippines

Yes, there are cool avatars here in myLot that are cool and quite unique. When you said colorfully crafted gifts, it makes me remember of a username called giftsandbagcom or something like that haha... I think he/she is the only myLot user I know of that had used gifts as an avatar.

I generally remember them by both their avatar as well as their name. But, when something happens to their accounts and they have to start a new one, I can more easily recognize them by their avatar. But, I've also noticed that several people can use the same avatar, so it's not always reliable.
• Philippines
21 Mar 08
It may not be reliable unless it's really unique though... like, it's something that he/she created so nobody can copy his/her avatar. Btw desertdarlene, the picture in your avatar somehow has a really sad feeling to it, and because of that I can never forget the time you responded to one of my discussion about being really sick. :D

No, I've been used to remembering names here of other users. If I have encountered one of their profiles, seen them more active by either posting and responding, then I do remember them right then and there. Perhaps the only one's I can't remember, were members who still hasn't put up an avatar on their profile here!
• Philippines

I see raijin, haha... I think that's because I am just new here in myLot and remembering names here is not an easy thing for me to do yet. I for one would not forget that tomberry avatar of yours though... haha! It's really unique for me. I also won't forget that your the type of person who would always try to post lenghty comments to my discussions haha...

Dear friend, I mostly remember by avatars and if I had a bit conversations I would remember the names. Both depends upon how catchy they are. An unique and catchy avatar makes it remember and a better or funny or rare names could also attach. Hence I hope it depends how attractive is either the avatar or name.
• Philippines
23 Mar 08
True, haha... but rare names does not necessarily means it's easy to remember though. For example, there are some myLot users who have all numbers on their names! Haha... That must be their telephone or cellphone numbers.

I rarely put attention to their avatars, because I usually remember their names. and there were times back then when I just needed to turn off the "display image" setting on my browsers to save more bandwidth when I had to access some sites with a lot of graphics (that just made me crazy), while I was also doing myLot at the same time. I think it's better to recognize myLotter from their names, I guess. :P however, yes, sometimes I just forgot their names and when I saw their avatars (especially unique ones), I would remember "whoops, that's her / that's him!" :P

Wow! you actually took notice more of their names rather than their avatars? Hrmm... I envy you for having that ability, I assume you must really have a good memory. It's something that I really am poor at haha...

I am very poor with name and therefore avatars really help me to identify and remember mylotter. But if they change their avatar, it will take sometime for me to remember them back. Due to that reason, I don't want to change my avatar, knowing that others will remember me by my avatar. Good day to you.

True, I also have a hard time remembering names. I actually don't want people to change their avatars, hehe... it's because I look at them as kind of a trademark to each user.

i do remember the names but it really makes a mark when i remember the avatar, because it is more colorful and lots mor variety, so it creats a personification of that mylotter, but if they don't have that first impression avatar, I will just try to remember their names or codenames.

Haha... I see, well- for me however, if both their avatars and names are not unique. I tend to really forget them.

Hello DevilHands, Avatars do naturally get the first attention, that's what they are for, a visual identity, so to speak. It's human nature that they remember something visual much more than they would remember a text, there are scientific studies done on the subject matter. And, one of the basic purposes of Avatars was precisely this visual recognition effect. I, like you, do see Avatars first, but I do know and remember user names of all my friends and so even if they change, which many friends have done, I'll recognize them. But, for others that I don't know personally, I will definitely get confused even if I have had an interaction with them previously!

Sure by avatars, if i read the name (under avatar) then there's no point to remember him/her or not.

Yup, i do remember most of my online mylot friends by their avtars, but some of them i remember through their names. As if the names is bit difficult then i try to remember them with their avtars. Thanks. and keep posting!!!
