Okay, so I use to be 125...that was only 2 years ago or so. I am now 160, I said it, 160. I'm admitting my freaking weight to everyone as a desperate measure for help. My doctor said I have a thyroid problem but because I have a heart condition they don't want to treat it until it gets out of control... which sucks for me because I now can't even fit into the clothes I could fit into a month ago. My weight is spiriling out of control and I just don't know what to do. I know there has to be certain diets and activities to help even people who have thyroid conditions lose weight. Please help!! I need to lose weight!

Okay just a few quick questions because I'm going through something similar. Did your doctor check you for a thyroid problem? Such as doing a blood test? Are you on Birth Control? What kind? lol..Sounds horrible asking these questions, but Im a nurse and I have a wonderful doctor who is the absolute greatest. I just had my thyroid checked because no matter how hard I was working out I wasnt losing. It turns out my BC is messing with my thyroid because its progesterone BC. Who knew. So we are getting that changed first and then are going to re test the thyroid. The thyroid meds have a tendency to speed up your heart rate and in turn your metabolism which is why they dont want to treat you for it. However there are some lifestyle changes you can make to help yourself and self treat so to speak. Up your greeen veggie intake..not canned..fresh or frozen. If you dont eat fish you should get yourself some omega 3 fatty acid vitamins. Vitamin B12 will help immensley as well with energy and helping correct brain dispersion of hormones and dopamine..lol..There is soo much that I have learned after finding all these things out and I promise you that they help. I have lost 10 lbs in the 2 weeks that I have added these to my daily routine.

Yes, they did check my thyroid by blood and by some kind of ultrasound on my neck. I definatley have a thyroid problem. I do remember them saying my birth control could be affecting it though, which is weird to me. I'm on the nuva ring. I just want to lose weight again!! I am definatley going to try the b12 and omega 3. I will go shopping for greens this week. You just don't know how much you helped me on this comment. It makes me feel better knowing I'm not alone and someone KNOWS what I'm talking about and going through. Thanks a billion!

Its no problem..Glad to help..I had no clue either that birth control can effect a person that much..And I'm a nurse..LOL! Nuva ring has progesterone as well I do believe..we are probably in the same boat :) All I know is that I thought I was losing my mind. I was burning myself out trying to work out all the time and was getting depressed because nothing was working. They SOOOOOO need that super anti fat pill to be discovered :) The one that works instantly...lol..no work needed!

Oh so very true! I was working out a good 2 hours a day and... NOTHING. I finally gave up just figuring I was destined to be a fatty. I need to go back to my doctor so that they can do something but it just seems every time I go they say my heart just wouldnt be able to handle the meds. (I have innapropriate sinus tachycardia, as well as supraventricular tachycardia) Which I am told is nothing too serious, just my heart can't even handle caffiene, much less, more meds!!

My normal weight is arounf 105, but recently I put on A LOT, after a close family member passed away. I've committed myself to exercise and eating better, and I'm half way back to my normal size. My tips are: Make breakfast your largest meal, so you burn off calories during the day, DO NOT starve yourself, because you will end up eating more, Eat conciously and take time to enjoy your food so you feel fuller by eating less. :]

here is how i would go at it: start out walking everyday for about 45 minutes a day. then move to jogging about 30 minutes 4 days a week. Then run hard for about 20 minutes about 3-4 times a week. Because to me cardio was the main key to losing weight. But obviously ontop of that you need a good diet. Here is my BIGGEST secret to my self success: SMOOTHIES... just replace like 1 meal a day with one and a small one for a snack or something about like that. Trust me it helps a ton. Also don't go in the diet telling your self all veggies and fruits blah blah blah. You can treat yourself once and a while! its just all in the right proportion

I'm actually too frightened to do cardio at the moment because of my heart problem. I do however walk every day for an hour with my children.

I used to be 98 pounds and now weight almost 130. I started binge eating. I am now trying tog et it down to a somewhat reasonaable weight. I know 98 sound extremely skinny but I have tiny bones and am only 5 feet tall. It is really quite reasonable for that height.

I used to be 125 and now I have a problem too: I am lazy. :( Sorry, I don't know anything about thyroid problems. I just need to get off mu butt and exercise. My diet isn't too bad, I need to cut out some of the fats. I am now 140 lbs and would like to get back to at least 130, however 120-125 would be ideal. I am sorry to hear about your thyroid problem. Have you tried searching on the internet? Hopefully someone will be able to help you with some good answers. Best wishes!

First of all, here is a great big (((HUG))). I would recommend you read the book "Eat to Live" by Dr Joel Fuhrman. www.drfuhrman.com It is life changing and may hold the answers you are looking for. FWIW, I had always weighed 125 pounds since I was 16 yrs old but back in September I found I weighed 164.9! After reading his book, I am back down to 144.4 (at least I was when I last checked a few weeks ago...I went into "maintenance mode" during our move) and I felt awesome!! My initial goal weight is 135 so I am almost there. You can do it!!

Thanks for letting me know that little fact and I will definatley get that book. Anything to help me at this point! Thank you for sharing that with me. It really makes me happy to learn so many people have the same problem!

Scale - Oh I hate this thing!! Throw it away! I don't need any reminders!!
Oh gosh gal... I snickered when I read your discussion because the same thing has happened to me. I have a thyroid problem as well and have been on so many different medications for all kinds of ailments but mainly for lupus and it's caused me to gain so much weight as well. I've finally had to accept "I am what I am and that's that" and be done with it. I did exercise a great deal one time and lost mostly inches but not much of the weight and then I gained every bit of it back. It's up to you to accept your weight or not to accept it. It is what it is and so accepting it makes you feel better about yourself. I still wish I could be 120 - 130 lbs again but those days are so over. I'll be watching this discussion in hopes someone has a good suggestion for I'm still open to them so we shall see how that goes. Good luck!

I also have a problem of weigh at the moment. I'm 140 due to child delivery. I try to loose some weigh by reducing my meals. however, i am not success yet. But it is because I don't discipline enough to reduce my weigh. My husband loose his weigh for about 40 in 2 months. He just eats vegetables and meat/fish and no rice at all and he did it continously. and he succeded.

I don't understand not treating your thyroid because you have a heart problem. Untreated hypothyroidism can cause enlargement of the heart and heart failure. It seems they would at least start treating you with a low dose of thyroid hormone and slowly increase it to let your heart get used to it gradually. Thyroid problems run in my family (mother's side). I was about 22 when I was first diagnosed with hypothyroidism. I had an enlarged thyroid and 15 nodules on my thyroid. I was immediately put on Synthroid. In my early 40's, I developed hyperthyroidism (Grave's Disease). I drank a radioactive cocktail to correct this. My thyroid was not totally ablated, but it went back to hypo. I have a bicuspid aortic valve and my cardiologist has never said anything about my thyroid medication; in fact, he always makes sure I am taking my thyroid medication. My Mother has Hashimoto's; she also has heart problems and takes medication for it. Weight gain? OMG! I've been there and done that, over and over. Once I even stopped taking my thyroid medication because the doctor said it would slow any weight loss. lol Before I knew it, I had an enlarged thyroid and a goiter. I never tried NOT taking my medication again! Also in my early 40's I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid arthritis. I gained weight again. Not being able to exercise was a killer! lol It's always something. I do so envy healthy people these days. My best advice would be to get your doctor to send you to a nutritionist. They can best help you change your diet to suit both your heart and thyroid conditions. I would question them as to why they are not treating your thyroid, though. Questioning is always a good thing. If they don't answer your questions, find another doctor. They should be more than willing to explain their treatment (or lack of it) to you. Good luck, dear.

Hi! Do you know what kind of thyroid problem you are having? I have toxic hyperthyroidism and my FT4 and FT3 are 7 times higher than the normal vale while my TSH is 0.06. My heart is also badly affected that I already have thyrotoxic heart disease or enlargement of the heart and abmormal rhythm or heart rate. I easily gets tired then and I palpitate. Usually, patients with hyperthyroidism lose weight and they will gain weight dramatically as their thyroid gland's production are controlled or corrected. In my case, I am now 50 kgs while I was only around 40 last December. I know the problem with unfit clothes because I'm really having a problem choosing which clothes would fit me now. Did your heart problem comes first before you were diagnosed with thyroid problem? what are the medicines you are taking now? I am taking methimazole 20 mg and atenolol 25 mg.

Hi, I have a problem with weight gain at the moment too, although mine isn't thyroid based, it's just having 2 little kids & not making time for myself to excersise! My best friend has been doing weight watchers for 6 weeks now & has lost close to 15kg & she is a big girl...she is sending me the weight watchers points book so I can have a go too. Perhaps you could look into something like weight watchers and see if it helps you.

I don't really have a thyroid problem, but I have a health condition that affects my thyroid and my weight. I don't know if you exercise, but you probably should. I would work with your doctor about that if I were you because you have a heart problem. You definitely want to start out slowly. But, if you have any kind of metabolic problem, you need to move your body around. And, it might help your heart, too. But, like I said before, be sure to ask your doctor about this. Another thing that might help is to make sure that you don't let your blood sugar swing throughout the day. So, I would recommend that you don't eat a lot of overly processed grains and sugar. I follow a whole foods diet, but I know that's not for everyone.

Try walking about 30 minutes a day... i am sure it will help yo a bit. But since your weight gain originated from a thyroid problem, i think you ought to have it consulted with a doctor of yours as he will be the more reliable person who can help you with it. I am sure though that exercise will help you too with you heart problems, just ask what you can and cannot do. Do you still gain a lot of wieght even if your eating habits are the same?
