Hi out there in computer land. My computer has been going really slowly and it bothers me. I know some of it is the internet (it has always been slow when I was in China), but I don't know if it is the result of unneccesary software or viruses/spyware. I have reinstalled the operating system several times and it seemed to help for a short time. Unfortunately, the last time it was reinstalled, it was in Chinese and I can't tell what the messages that come up say. When I was in Thailand in February, a guy there recommended antivir and it seems to do ok, but it keeps trying to get me to upgrade so I can get their anti-spyware program. Is there a system out there that is free that will eliminate them all? Most I have looked into will find them, but to eliminate the spyware, they want you to buy their program. I don't want to buy something if I don't have to. Any recommendations? Thanks for your help.

This usually happens if you're using an antivirus that really uses a lot of CPU memory. Personally, I don't recommend installing Norton and Symtantec. I also don't recommend to install a lot of antispyware but you may do so if you're an advanced user. I do recommend to use ESET NOD32 antivirus. It blocks spywares, virus, malwares, phishing, drive-by downloads that contained malware, etc. It also monitors you're internet activity. It is also very light on resources. Based on my experience, NOD32 is very light among others. :-)

Avira AntiVir is also very light on resources. It does not consume a lot of memory as well. I had used that antivirus before and I also found it very effective in terms of detecting viruses. You're right. NOD32 is a paid version but it is worth it to try. :-)

Do you know if antivir falls in the category of using a lot of CPU memory? I use that because it is free. It sounds like you would have to pay after 30 days with the one you mention. Thanks for the suggestion though.

For free anti-virus and Spyware, I can't say anymore because Deepti has said the words that I want to say but there is an additional issue which I am able to talk about which is the problem you are facing pertaining to the Chinese version of Operating System(O.S.). You may need to format the hard disk containing Chinese O.S. and install the English version of O.S. on it. On the other hand, you may want to buy a portable hard disk and install English version of Windows, so that you can have both Chinese and English language of Windows if Chinese version is preferably not to be formatted. I wonder is there any software that can translate Chinese Windows XP to English Windows XP? If there is such software, I bet it will be easy and cost-saving.

I didn't know you could run more than one operating system. I have a student who was going to look for an English copy of windows for me and go from there. I think when I return to America, I will get an authentic version and even an American purchased computer because the one the school gave me is so much trouble and the laptop I bought here is also a problem. Thanks for the suggestion.

In addition, you can do a dual-boot configuration on Windows XP which means you can choose the Chinese or English to start booting from the hard disk. This will require some skills and knowledge about configuring Windows XP.

I think your problem is that your computer is slow? Or is it the net connection that is slow? If its computer that is slow, I would suggest adding more RAM, more than anything.

I think it is a combination of the two. This is the school's computer although my nephew tells me that my laptop is also slow. That part could be the internet, but I couldn't even get other programs to run (the word processor) so it is more than just the internet. I tried going in and making it so that some of the programs weren't starting every time the computer turned on and that helped a little. I will have a student come in and disable some of the other programs that I don't use so that maybe it will speed up a little more. Thanks for the comment.

AVG will do the trick. Just do a search on AVG and you will get a free fix.

I think you have to re-install the Windows in English otherwise you cannot do anything... Just format the harddrive and install windows and first install the antivirs software and update.... Then run a full scan on your computer..... Then it will get better..... If you computer is slow to star go to run in the start menu and type "msconfig" and go to star up manue and remove the services which are loading during the bootting up.... this will also help to make up hte speed.......

You may need to format the hard disk containing Chinese O.S. and install the English version of O.S. on it.
