One of the best ways to loose weight is to keep a food journal. When you write down everything you eat during the day you will realize how many calories you are eating. By writing down everything you eat, (come on, even the snacks), you will elliminate some of the snacking. You'll see where your diet misses the mark by writing down what you eat. You'll begin to see why you end up pigging out if you write things down. You'll end up seeing real results too, because when you write down everything you eat, you will shock yourself. Sometimes, it shocks you so much you stop eating those things that keeping you stuck. Give it a try - for just one day. Write down everything you consume. See what you think about it and let me know if it helps.

Hi Terilee. My problem is portion control, and for some reason I seem to have no control over what I eat,be it quantity or quality, It seems that I can not eat just one of any thing, it is almost like I have to eat the whole bag, box, tin of what ever is is front of me, and the worst part of it is I live alone and cook for 3. My brother is on one of those very ridged diets where he is allowed two 3ounce portions of protein per day, and Vegetables, no starch no fat, he has lost a lot of weight about 50 pounds but I don't have the $4oo per week to invest in such a plan, mind you if I were paying $400 per week I would make darn sure I never ate more than I was allowed so perhaps that is the point to my dilemma, no incentive, other than "I wish", and that dear lady is NOT working for me,I even found in a thrift store one of those old counters that have tiny pictures of carbs, fats, protein, etc, but even that will not work as I forget to carry it or lie to myself. I guess I do not really want to lose weight that bad, and that part scares me as I really do need to lose at least 50 pounds it is starting to affect my health

When it's time Robin, you will.....It has to do with filling a void,,,or craving. You need to find out why you can't stop...I use to be that way with oreo cookies. I couldn't eat one or two - I had to eat the whole package. I learned to eat my limit, which is 4, with milk and put them away. I realized 4, sometimes less, satisfied my craving. I had to force myself and to be honest, sometimes, I benge, but I know why. It takes getting to being really worried about your health before you will actually try to do something. At least it did me. I know how you feel.

I would find this hard to do. I might try it, but I would have to eat first. Over the last week or so, I was lucky to eat once a day and sometimes twice. I would often wait for my nephew to get up and would wind up not eating until 8pm if at all. I know I should do something like this but so far it hasn't happened. But I can say that in the last week (by doing this and walking) I lost about 5 pounds so I can't complain. Just 30 or so to go!!!

are you sure that its really working well dear? i really having problem with my weight at now, it seems easily to get weight rather than to loose it. however, by listing any food that i eat in daily, it would make me get confused which foods that i should reduce or eliminate at all. do you have any suggestion for this case, hun?

It works well forme plum....When I first started it, it was difficult to remember, so I made my write down sheet out of bright pink paper and put it on the refrigerator so I could see it. It reminded me to write things down. When you right everything down, I mean everything, it helps you see in what areas you are eating out of boredom or just to have something in your hands. When you write it down, it triggers something in your psyche and makes you realize you are eating some things out of an inner habit, not because you are hungry. If you are dieting for any health reasons or simple weight loss reason, you won't have a problem realizing which foods to eliminate. You should concentrate on a healthy, balanced diet.

I've been eating properly, baked or broiled chicken, fish and lots of veggies and fruit, lots of water and natural juices, taking vitamins, and doing some exercise. I'm writing down what I eat, which helped me cut out snacking and gave me a better picture of the things I cook. I make a menu for the week and stick to it well. It's help a lot. It brings to focus better eating habits. I've lost 27 pounds over a 4 or 5 month period.

That's not a bad idea, if I can just remember to do it. I've been trying to diet for the past couple weeks. Some days I do really good watching what I eat, and others I slip a little. I only need to lose a couple pounds, but it seems sometimes those couple pounds are the hardest to lose. I try to keep a mental note of what I've ate for the day, but sometimes over look something small. I'll have to give it a try and see what happens. Thanks for the info.

I sort of keep a food diary of sorts but I use the online site FitDay.com where I can not only keep track of what I eat but also how many calories I burn, my progress, etc etc...Definately though, regardless of HOW one does it, keeping track of calories IN and calories OUT is a great help in not just losing wt but being healthy too..

Yes it is a good idea to make a journal on what you eat especially when you are trying to loose weight. You should take note the amount and the type of food you are eating as well. So after listing down the food- plan out what are the foods you would like to avoid that is not helping to lose weight.Eat more fruit and vegetable and be sure it is a balanced diet. We should not forget to do some exercise.

That may help in a way when you know what you have been taking for a day in terms of food intake. But it will probably be more useful and effective if firstly you know for these foods the amounts of calories, fats, cholesterol, etc. associated with these, and compare these with the total of such intake recommended per day for a person of your age. If you do not know these, then being more aware of the food intake alone may not help so much. Also such things as metabolic rate and how fast you burn away your fats based on your daily activities determine also if your food intake is right, and whether you will put on more weight if your fats are not adequately burned off and end up accumulating in your body.

I already tried that and that was good to do... You can also add monitoring your weight everyday... it may help too... Also you may add some exercise to reduce wrinkle... If you like green veggies, it will make it fast for you to loose weight.. After dieting you may give your self a reward and eat your favorite food... I am done with that...

Terrilee, yeah,it's a good way,i will try tomorrow, sometimes,we just can not remember what we have ate during one day,i think if i write down,i will be a little surprised.Based on my experiences, when you have dinner, don't eat too much, maybe you can only eat about 70% of your stomach capacity, that will keep you healthy and thin;also,do some exercises,it's also very good way.

I've known that food journal in one of the novel I've read and I know it is as effective as keeping an expenses journal. Right now, as much as I wanna keep one, I cannot find time to write down all I am taking in because I am busy with my baby and who cares if I haven't lost the weights I put on while pregnant!

I tried this with an online calorie counting site. Almost everything I eat isn't listed on the counter so after 3 days I gave up. I got too much I need to lose too but I can't seems to do it even though I don't eat excessively although I hardly exercise. Perhaps I was lazy before, these days its I can't care less.

I agree with you a hundred percent. A food diary is critical if you're serious about weight loss. Most people are unaware of how much they snack during the day and those snacks really add up. If you cook, you're going to do a lot of tasting. Add to that the samples you nibble on at the grocery store and the quick bites you grab out of the refrigerator and you've soon added several hundred extra calories to your daily intake. Plus, you weren't even aware of it. If you keep a food diary, it's important that you write down EVERYTHING you eat.

That is a very good idea. It's always good to keep a detailed log of what you eat. You will find yourself avoiding certain foods simply to avoid the embarrassment of having to write it down. It is difficult however to stick to such a regime, especially for those with hectic lifestyles who may not have the time to keep strict records of everything that they eat. There is an article here that features a number of tips as well as scientific facts to help you to lose weight without taking any of the enjoyment out of life: http://www.healthmad.com/Nutrition/Encouraging-Healthy-Eating.99849 Best of luck.:)
