Yesterday I was looking at the vegetables at the grocery store and I noticed that they have green tomatoes. Now I love green fried tomatoes. It seems kind of early but that is ok. The one that I bought had a little bit of red on it. Just enough to give it a blush. when they are at this stage they have a little bit of tang when they are fried. I dredge them in flour and put just enough oil in the skillet to cover the bottom then add the dredged tomato slice and let it brown nicely. They are so good. Do you eat green fried tomatoes or have you ever heard of them?

I grew up having green fried tomatoes every spring. I loved having them. Until I moved south though I thought it was a southern dish since my Grandfather was born in Georgia. I found out wrong. No one around here had heard of them. They all thought I was nuts to want green tomatoes. It turned out to be a northern dish. Lets face it, after having no fresh vegetables all winter farmers would try to find a way to make the first ones edible as they appeared. This was one way. I still try to cook them once a year but finding them is very hard down here. I have to go to a vegetable market since the stores don't sell them.

I looked to see where you are. You have just gone too far south for them. Here in South Carolina is where I'm at. I grew up in Nebraska so you can see how far from home I am. You can buy green tomatoes in the grocery stores here but not back there.

I grew up in Michigan :) and believe me Florida is different. I'm going to have to try and find some next week when I do the shopping. They really sound good to have now.

My husband loves fried green tomatoes but I never did like them until I met him and started cooking them myself. I love ripe toatoes too though. I can eat those right off of the vine.

Very true. I cannot wait to get some plants in the ground this year and raise our own. I love fresh tomatoes and now I also like the green tomatoes fried up too. I want to also plant some green onions.

I prefer my tomatoes red and juicy. I bought some the other day that were so good. They were vine ripened and still had some of the vine attached. They tasted so good and fresh. I avoid buying tomatoes thru the winter, mostly because the are tasteless or bland. These tomatoes tasted like I just picked them, yummy. I have tried the fried green tomatoes and wasn't thrilled with them.

Its does make things so much sweeter when its something that reminds us of our grandmothers. My Avatar, Maxine reminds me of my grandma, an old lady wih an attitude. That is part of her appeal to me, she is my hero.

I like the ripe one off the vine too. I don't like buying tomatoes from the store because as you said they are tasteless. But the green ones remind me of my grandmother.

Green Fried Tomatoes are a staple 'round here girl. We grow our own tomatoes so each year just before the last freeze is when they are always the best. Just before they begin to turn, or if they have a blush on them is the best time to cook them. Next time you cook them, make sure they are dry by patting them with a paper towel. Then, dip them in buttermilk before you dredge them in flour. I always mix the salt and pepper into the flour before I dredge them. Sometimes I cook them in olive oil, which makes them have a slightly different flavor, but mostly, just plain old crisco. YUM YUM......

I agree that they are best with a blush on them. Thanks for the hint about patting them dry. I usually cook them in vegetable oil. Now I'm using olive oil to fry most things. I'll try the buttermilk too sometime when I have it.

Patting them dry helps the coating stick better no matter what you use.

I first heard of them back when the movie "Fried Green Tomatoes" was popular. For me, this is actually a wonderful delicacy. Just not sure if my husband likes them though. They are actually quite hard to find around here, unless you grow them and cook them yourselves. But they are so GOOD.

I've heard of them but don't remember ever trying them. My neighbors gave me a bunch of green tomatoes last year. Half of them ripened pretty well in the window. The other half I used in recipes I found online...green tomato quick bread, salsa, and cobbler. They all actually turned out pretty good.

yes some times they do ripen good in the window. we always pulled them up while attached to the vine. That way they would still feed from the vine. They lasted longer that way. The quick brad and cobbler sound good. I'll have to tey it when I get the chance. You should try them fried some time.

Yes, I had some green tomatoes, but that was a long time ago. I now have almost forgot how it tastes. I was very curious about the green tomatoes when I first saw them. I am glad that you love those kind of tomatoes and I wish that you have enjoyed it a lot.

Yes I have heard of them. No I have never eaten them. But I am game to try them. I believe they came back into popularity after the Movie "Fried Green Tomatoes" came out with Kathy Bates. May have to attempt to cook some. They do sound good.

It wasn't until I moved to the south that I was able to find green tomatoes in the grocery store. I sure missed them when I lived in town until I moved down here. If you get the ones that have just a blush of red they have a tangy taste. By the way I loved that movie and the book too.
