according to a recent study done by the american kidney foundation and its partners, stunning 60% of patients with diabetes and kidney disease did not receive a test for urine microalbumin during a 12-month period. Ninety percent of patients who had hypertension and kidney disease also did not receive the test. Urine tests for microalbumin, a biological marker for renal vascular damage, are available through most laboratories. This test should be performed at least annually for these patients, according to guidelines from the National Kidney Foundation, the American Diabetes Association, the National Institutes of Health, and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.[5-8] Our report, based on results of 5.2 million patients in the Quest Diagnostics database, is a resounding alarm to the medical community that they need to do a better job of monitoring for this insidious disease. With increased physician awareness and improved monitoring, patients with CKD will be able to receive treatments that can slow disease progression, while those at risk for CKD will stand a better chance of having their disease detected in its early, most treatable stages. \this is simply horrible 1 in 9 americans die of kidney disease every year. people with diabetes make sure you get those tests done, does your doctor send you for tests when you see him or just offer you pills?

I am positive that my mother hasn't had this test in along time. She had diabetes and has trouble keeping hers down it goes up to almost 4 alot. Doctors is wanting her to start insulin shots but she refuses, since she hates needles and says she couldn't give her self the shots. Her mother, father, and 4 aunts had to take insulin shots. Thanks for reminding about this I will start getting onto her about getting it tested. She don't like her doctor at all and is looking for a new one. I know I can't talk her into the insulin shots( I hate them myself). I am htinking of going to spend a week with her and maybe try to get her to start a diet program and exercise one. But She is stubborn..and I can only make her do what she actually wants to do. I am going to be looking through alot of diabetic friendly recipes to help her get started and actually want to do it with the tantalizing foods..Dad is another story..

This is why we have to be informed about our health issues. We have to be our own advocates and be on our toes trying to make sure we get the help we need. That and the screenings to help determine what treatment we need.

that is so true and though we can't know everything about everything the things that affect our health the most according to our lifestyles and health conditions, we need to know something about. on another issue I am losing points, I went down three points in five minutes (rating) has that happened to you?

I had it happen once this week or last, but not today. If I remember correctly, though, the next day, or later in the day, it seemed to jump right back. I know others have had a lot of points disappear. I am not sure I understand it, but I usually figure it works out in the end.
