why should we take vitamin D, yes it builds healthy bones, but did you know the body doesn't manufacture Vitamin D Naturally? moat Americans are vitamin D deficient. "Over the past decade, studies suggest that adequate amounts of vitamin D may lessen the risk of several types of cancer and may also play a role in preventing high blood pressure, multiple sclerosis, and even schizophrenia." people with lower levels of blood pressure also have deficient levels of Vitamin D and this has been linked to heart disease "One additional way vitamin D may help reduce fractures is by preventing the falls that can cause them. Vitamin D deficiency leads to muscle weakness, but getting enough can improve muscle function." vitamin D also helps prevent the fall that causes bone fractures in the first place, for full story http://clicks.health.harvard.edu/dm?id=7BF8DB51535E788844D09151A3E8FE8ACF80EF627D233712

I take vitamin D because it comes with my calcium so it helps me to absorb the calcium much better but I did not know about Vitamin D improving muscle function thus preventing falls and wish I had known two years ago when I fell and broke my shoulder badly so that I had to have bionic joint put in.i would have taken more of it had I known then.

If Americans would get outside more they would have enough Vitamin D. All it takes is 30 minutes outside a day to get enough sunshine for our body to produce adequate amounts of Vitamin D.

Hey, thanks for the link. I try to take vitamins because I know I am not getting the proper vitamins I need when eating, I don't drink alot of milk or eat alot of cheese. I do however eat yogurt but not the recommended dose for having healthy bones. And also the body can't absorb the calcium and phosphorus it needs properly without the vitamin D So if you have a Deficiency there then you are having a few other deficiencies as well. And not only does it mess with your muscles by weakening them it also messes with nerve function and may help in treating psoriasis. Also Vitamin D deficiency also causes nervousess, dirrhea and insomnia in some people. I have psoriasis and insomnia so maybe I should start getting my vitamin D in maybe taking a Vitamin supplement isn't enough. So thanks for posting this I think it will be very informative and a great help to those who didn't know or have forgotten what they once knew..

Yes, I am very aware of what this deficiency means, and I take vitamins, and also drink milk with Vitamin D added. When exposed to the sun briefly, the body will make Vitamin D, but the air pollution, and fear of cancer tends to keep this from happening. Also people in more northern climates do not get enough sun, especially in the winter. These are good reminders of how to stay healthy as we age.
