I happened across an article that will be highlighted on Nightline tonight about the skin condition called vitiligo. Vitiligo is a progressive lightening of the skin. Singer Michael Jackson came under fire several years ago when he tried to explain this condition which had caused his skin to lighten. Many still do not accept his explanation. The disease is far more noticeable in people with darker skin tones. A skin specialist, it was noted in the article, says that people can often have the condition but it takes certain incidents to trigger it so that it is visible. I am including a photo of a girl named Desiree showing the progress of the disease and the changes it has made in her skin's appearance through several years.

Hi worldwise! I have heard of and seen people with this condition which can cause them a lot of emotional distress, I have to say most people I know of who have had the disease have had very patchy skin changes - the photos you have included are the forst time I have ever seen such an even skin change - thank you for teaching me something new! I think the main reason that people ridiculed MJ is more because he had so obviously had a lot of work done on his face and denied he had any done at all! It is the old adage of cry wolf too often and when it is for real no one will believe you! xxx

I'm always happy to be able to throw some light on any subject, mummymo, and I would just like for people not to be so judgmental.

My husband developed a slight case of this disease soon after he got his liver transplant. It is only on his hands and is only visable mainly during the summer months when his hands are exposed to sun. He keeps a very strong sunscreen on them to avoid the bad burn that can happen on the less pigmented areas. We recently went to Hawaii and even with a constant slathering of 50 sunscreen he still came home with a noticable difference. He is lucky in that it is only in the area of his hands..and since men's hands aren't usually smooth anyway, it is easy to disquise this with a skin bronzing agent...he doesn't like the make up that is available that is waterproof..it makes his skin irritated. I feel badly for those who have severe cases and suffer the stares and ridicule of others. I have a cousin that also suffer this disease and her's is her 1/2 of her face...she uses the makeup and it's amazing how you can't see it at all...in the summer the makeup looks just a tiny bit heavy for the season..but the improvement is worth it...many of her own family never knew she had it until she was hospitalized and the makeup was removed...

My aunt who had this once got a very bad sunburn on her hands and on her lips while fishing. She was advised to always wear gloves in sun exposure, although she could get the kind with the fingertips cut out. She also had to be sure to wear SPF lip glosses or lip balms.

Thank you for your input on this subject, rx4life. I find that some people are so ignorant about any of the skin conditions that are out there. As a sufferer from a common skin condition myself, I find that I frequently need to explain that it is not contagious. There are many resources to learn about things if people would only use them.

yes but with michael it never was a reason to change his nose 21 times until it actually fell off, michael just wanted to be white as far as I am concerned. But that is my opinion only, I have seen one girl in the neighbourhood growing up who had it, but that was all.

why would he want to be white, ask him, you don;t but that is not you we are talking about it is him, and no person in the industry gets their nose done 21 times, the professionals all of them have said michael has problems,

I am sure that Michael would disagree with you, winterose. Why on earth would anyone want to be white when brown is such a beautiful color? As far as his nose jobs goes, its no more than many white people do who are in the entertainment industry every day.

Evidently there are more famous people than I thought with this disease. I suppose they wear concealing makeup. I've seen a few people out in public who might have had it, and didn't know what it was at the time. Some of the more famous with the disease besides Michael: Graham Norton is a British TV, Kara-Louise is a young girl who participated in Big Brother 8, Sisqo, rapper. I got this all from the Vitiligo blog if anyone is interested - below. I truly need a job doing research! haha. http://www.vitiligoblog.com/Famous-people-with-vitiligo/Famous-people-with-vitiligo-pictures-included.html

Being on myLot certainly does require that you do your homework, whittby! What you found out is there for anyone to see if they are not ruled by ignorance and prejudice. When I first heard of the condition I had no problem believing it. We live in a world where nearly anything is possible. I also have a family member with vitiligo-and she does not want to be white!

I didn't know that it was a disease that caused Micheal Jacksons change..And he tried to explain that? Shows how the media screws things up and I hope that your post here, proves that what you see and hear from the media is a lot a B S... Thank you for sharing this..

Yes, carmelanirel, he was scorned when he first went public with the news of his condition, and lots of people said he just wanted to be white. I have a skin condition myself(not vitiligo), and I can guarantee that they can cause much misery in your life.

Yes. The melanin is missing and most people with vitiligo should protect themselves from the sun because they don't have first layer of the skin. Too much sun exposure can lead to skin cancer. Thank you for sharing. :)

My aunt had it, and at the time she was diagnosed, it was attributed, at least in part, to excessive tanning in her youth. It is a real condition. I know someone with it right now. I know that later in life my Aunt was also diagnosed with celiac disease, which is an auto immune disorder characterized by allergic reaction to gluten. It causes malabsorption of nutrients. I find myself wondering if in anyway the two are related.

Well that could explain the skin tone change, but how about that nose of his? I like his older music and still listen to it from time to time. I think he has had a hard time of it.
