Always think of your camera as a "tool".

Congrats and good luck! I believe the reason most people "look down at" the 18-55mm lens is because it's a kit lens. It comes with the camera, and it is basically just a functional lens. Most photographers start out with their kit lens, then later upgrade to a lens more suited to their personal needs. So while the kit lens is perfectly acceptable and will take fine pictures, you'll find that you may want different lenses for different types of photos in the future. With that said, it's not the equipment it's the photographer. And a good photographer can take excellent photos with any type of camera or lens. So I'm sure you'll do just fine with your 18-55mm lens! Have fun and keep shooting!

I have a Canon EOS350 Digital Rebel XT and I didn't get the 18-55mm lens, but a 50mm fixed focal length lens. I would have gladly taken the camera with the 18-55mm lens if it came with the camera, though. The 50mm is fantastic, but I like to take a wide range of photos and a zoom lens is not a bad idea, especially with the 1.6 crop that a digital camera has in the first place. It's often not what kind of equipment you have that takes a good/bad photo, it's the person behind it. If you have good photography skills in the first place, you'll probably take good pictures no matter what camera you use.
