Or the Freedom Writer's Foundation? A news story talks about a teacher who was suspended for using it in class, with parental permission. I wanted to learn more, so I Googled it. I think this has got to be on my summer reading list. I am so impressed. Here is a link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=30857&clcid=0x409 I would encourage people who are interested to read about the book and the foundation, and how it came about.

Your link goes somewhere entirely different than the foundation or the book. http://www.freedomwritersfoundation.org I think I'm going to look up the book as well. Thanks for telling us about it!

Thanks for the correction. Same thing happened to a friend that started a discussion earlier. Must be a glitch somewhere. When I checked it out, before pasting it, it went right to it.

You're welcome. I love stories like this one - so many of these kids are just considered losses, not worth the time or money. This and other similar stories prove that something positive can take place when the kids are met on their own turf, so to speak. That point of commonality that she mentioned is important to those who feel forgotten and alone.

I do not really get the time to watch movies. I also tend to fall asleep when I try to. I find it cool that it is a movie and I may try to see it this summer.

When I read that book it was also controversial.

I will have to read about this when I have a little bit more time on my hands. I does sound interesting, though. Thank you. I guess this is another way of saying that censorship is, indeed, alive and well in this world.

I think it sounds awesome. I don't know why a person would not. You would think that anything (within reason) that helped kids learn...kids that really need more than traditional read the book and take the test learning. I think I am going to check out the book too. Thanks for sharing, Brightest Blessings, Mari

Yes, I have heard of this foundation and how it came about, and while there are many laudable things to say about the teacher whose actions started it, and while suspension of teachers over free speech issues have been troubling to me for many years, there are some other important considerations here. When a teacher uses something that s/he knows is going to be controversial enough to require parental permission in the first place, then s/he must always realize that this opens up a whole other can of worms. I have always tried my level best to keep politics and religion out of the classroom (except in courses on politics or religion which I have chosen not to teach) I never tolerated people in my classes putting others down whether because of physical appearance or ethnicity or their ideas, however, I think that conversations about behavior should be held mainly in confidence, one on one or in small groups involving only those participated in an inappropriate activity. The reason for that line of thinking, in public schools particularly is that under our US form of government we have a separation of church and state that government workers need to respect. When a whole class is forced to participate in activities which involve assignments that essentially require them to "rat people out" the public school teacher has overstepped his or her bounds and in my view no amount of "the ends justify the means" rationalization is going to make it right. I do think there are better ways to broaden a curriculum and that schools need to concentrate more on objective criteria. Assigning students to keep "diaries" tends to undermine this and turn education into indoctrination and that flies in the face of freedom.

I have never read the book, is it worth reading? From what you are saying there is some controversy involved, which of course was not mentioned on the website I visited, and was not mentioned on the television interview I heard. As far as the teacher getting suspended, mentioned in another discussion, by someone else, I suspect that she has tred on toes and walked a thin line before, or they would not be so harsh. The other thing would be that she should have made very sure that she had the approval from the school board before she began teaching the unit. The material does not seem to be time sensitive.

I didn't read the book but have followed the story in the news. One of the probelms I have with teachers forcing students to keep diaries filled with their "feelings" instead of objective data is that I have seen firsthand too many teachers abusing that sort of trust. It is particularly a problem when male teachers encourage little girls to pour out their deep personal feelings in a diary that gets handed in and "graded" and then the teacher takes advantage of that trust. Of course, female teachers can abuse trust, too, but this is one of the several reasons why any kind of diary activity is controversial. You wouldn't believe some of the X-rated stuff we found left lying around various classrooms that ended up being "assignments" for other classes, some that had been handed back with the teacher's comments and got crumpled up and missed the waste paper basket. Well, I guess that is what I get for having been the kind of teacher who went in early to picks up the trash, but you know, none of our students ever littered so I wasn't going to make them sit for an hour or more looking at other people's garbage.

I agree, diaries are not appropriate assignments. I had one or two of those types of assignments at college level. Actually one for a Psychology class was a book of my own poetry plus illustrations. I thought at the time that it would be hard to put a grade on it and be fair.(I wish I still had those poems or that book). There are always teachers who will go in and "pick up the garbage" in one form or another, because they love learning.

no I never heard of it and as a writer myself it might be a valuable resource for me, I don't have time to look up the link and read right now because of the back log of emails but I will certainly bookmark it to read at another time.
