Do you receive mail soliciting gifts for Indian children?

I have just come from checking out a school for Native American children that regularly sends me mail soliciting a donation. It occurred to me when I got one today that I have never checked this school out so I decided to do so. It is called St. Labre Indian School and is located in Ashland, Montana. I like doing things to improve children's lot in life because I see so many who are receiving the short end of the stick, so to speak. This particular school is for Cheyenne and Crow children who mostly live on reservations. I have Cherokee blood, but I believe that people are people no matter which tribe they happen to come from. So, do you ever receive this type of mail, and do you respond? As to how I got onto the mailing lists, I think it started back when I began collecting Indian dolls some years ago.

I tend to be vary wary of these Native organizations who ask for donations. I used to get a lot from St. Joseph's school..They usually send a "gift" from a Sioux child when asking for donations, like a small dreamcatcher, or a dreamcatcher keychain, Native designed writing paper, stuff like that--I mean aren't they using a lot of that donated money to send this stuff out? So doesn't make sense to me. Also got completely turned off by them when once they sent me a plea for donations as they wanted to reach their goal of being able to provide a Bible for every Sioux child.... to me that seemed like cramming Christianity down their throats and still trying to wipe away their traditional religion--same old, same old to my mind. I also used to be a foster person for the futures for children...it was $30 a month to sponsor a child...thing is, the child does NOT get all that money..you figure $30 times 12 months equals $36 a year...I found out that the children only get the equivalent of $150 a year...and Futures kept the rest--somehow didn't seem fair

As a sponsor with Children International, pyewacket, I have often wondered about these very same things. I once talked to my mother about my doubts and her response was that if you do something with the right intentions and your trust is abused you have still done a good deed. I also wonder why it is that so many Native American children should be in dire straights because I was under the assumption that they received some type of reparations or subsidies.

Oh thank you for the br! If you want to hear something funny in a way..and this goes with the thought that Native American children get some kind of govt help...When people find out I'm part Native American they ask me, "Oh, you get special govt help/money/aid" Uh, right, sure. NOT. If Native American people really did get special govt help, especially on the reservations, they wouldn't be in the horrible conditions that they are..the worse is the largest "rez"--the Navajo which is the poorest rez going--many rez Indians live in homes without any modern conveniences that we take for granted like plumbing or electricity

Now that's an interesting collection. How many dolls do you have? Nope, we don't get mail soliciting gifts/donations for Indian children. We primarily get greeting cards and other name address labels from disabled American veterans or an organization of that nature. We always donate. I am also Cherokee Indian. My great grandmother was fullblooded Cherokee. Saw a picture of her once and she was amazing. I am very fair with light hair so that tells you I didn't get any of her traits. My mother looked as though she had some Cherokee blood.

I have 15 dolls, carolbee, but I plan to resume collecting soon. I had to stop due to a lack of space. My grandmother on my father's side was a full-blooded Cherokee and I also have Cherokee on my mother's side of the family. I'm always a bit flustered because everywhere I go people come up to me and say, "You're an Indian." It is even more unusual for me since I am black.

Uncle Finley Just Laid Back And Taking Everything - Here's a picture of Uncle Finley taken sometime after he and Aunt Marce retired and moved back here to Indiana.
My folks--and, now, my widowed mom--have donated to this organization for many years, and we really like the gifts as well. They sent a Rosary one time, and my folks gave it to me to decorate my apartment back when I was in college. We're Protestants, so we weren't even thinking of it being a Rosary but just like a cross hanging from a beaded chain with the entire thing being colored a kind of very-light greenish blue. I hung it on the mirror of my dresser. My aunt and uncle had to move from a rented house that had become like their own home--going from there to a small flat back in 1975. There was a lot to think about and a lot to move (after deciding what to keep and what to sell or give away). On top of all of this, Uncle Finley got mugged. He ended up having a serious heart-attack. We didn't even know if he would live long enough for us to see him. My mom was still working at the time (though her boss told her to take off as much time as she needed if necessary), and I was in school. Uncle Kermit was between job appointments, and it was decided that he should fly out first and see what was going on. Mark came over to my place to be with me, as I would be receiving a phone call when my folks knew something more, and we decided to pray together. Mark (a Catholic) noticed the Rosary, and, as he didn't have his own with him at the time, asked if it would be okay to use this in our prayer. It was fine with me. He took the Rosary and sang a little song about it. Then, we prayed together. Soon, the phone rang. Uncle Finley would be in intensive care, but he was going to be okay! Uncle Kermit would be staying there for a couple of days and then flying back to Louisiana. My mom reported for work the next day, and I continued with school. Right around that time, there was unrest in Belfast, Ireland where Catholics and Protestants were blowing each other up over their beliefs--yet, meanwhile, my Catholic friend and I prayed together in one accord, and Uncle Finley was with us for 18 more years with a wonderful quality of life!

That is a wonderful and heart-warming story, AJ, and it just goes to show that the Lord moves in mysterious ways.

no I never had, perhaps you belong to an organization or newsletter and that is where this is all coming from, or they gave your name to a third party.

I've always tried to give when I could, winterose, so I guess word travels.

I receive those kinds of things for animals. Humane society, ASPCA, and Alley Cat Allies. I am sure it comes from all the things I buy for my kitties. I also get calls for donations, you know fire fighters, children with cancer and that kind of thing.

There are so many, Aurone! I just sent a small donation to our Troopers Coalition. Sometimes I really cannot afford to give but I hate to say no.

No, I don't get these letters, but I used to get a catalog with items for sale from Native Americans. I used to wonder how much of the profit went to the artists.

That is understandable, whittby, when the world is so full of self-serving, greedy people.

I don't think I have ever received this type of thing in the mail that I can recall. I do believe in helping the misfortunate when I can also but money is so tight these days. My grandma used to send money overseas to a little girl to help feed her.

I do understand how tight money is, stephcjh, and it is very hard to help out sometimes. I guess you have to pick and choose your battles. I have been sponsoring a little boy in Ecuador for 6 years now and it is a good feeling whenever I get a new photo showing me how much he has grown over the years.

I have not received mail soliciting gifts but my Aunt used to send stuff to one awhile back. I used to have it bookmarked on my old email address. I believe she used to send clothes and school supplies. I remember looking at the list of items they asked for and thinking that they needed everyday items that we took for granted. I gave my Aunt some of the items I had at my house that didn't get used. She sent them along with her box. I wish I could remember what the name of the school was.

One of my bosses gets the same type of mailings. (Not sure if it's the same school as yours). He gets stickers, key chains and notepads in attempts for him to donate money. He gives me all the stuff to give to my kids.

I usually try to send them a little something, tinkerick, only if it is 5 or 10 dollars. Those cute little dreamcatcher key chains are great!
