do you have a pie iron? if you do not have one, you MUST get one...lol...i swear i could sell these at campgrounds...everytime we go camping & i use ours people are in awe & of course want to try it out and want one of their own so bad... this is a pie iron, you can get one for like $15 - a double one (which is a must for a large family!) might be like $25...actually i just looked on amazon, they are really cheap, i might have to get another one, lol. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw/103-2448282-2540621?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=pie+iron you basically butter up 2 pieces of bread & then add whatever filling - we've made apple, blueberry, cherry pies...also pizzas, grilled cheese, hoagie type sandwiches, you could probably make an egg sandwich too though i haven't tried it. they have a pie iron cookbook - I'm sure there would be a lot online too. I love the pie iron! they are awesome!

My uncle has a pie iron and they are great. Have you seen the hot dog iron they have? Growing up we had one that made pigs in the blanket. That was really handy too. Thanks for the suggestions.

You can make soups and stews at home, freeze them and use them to keep your coolers cold. Then heat over the fire! We also freeze our water bottles as well.

I wrote an article on how to cook on a stick at Associated content. Unfortunately I can't copy and paste here yet, so I can't give you a link. You can go to Associated Content and go the search box and type in "How To Cook on a Stick at a Camp Fire" It tells you all about how to cook on a stick over a campfire. It tells you how to do it, what you can cook on the stick, and there is also a recipe there.

because of the temperature control issues, i only cook over the fire things that are already cooked , so we are just really heating them up. i use heavey duty tin foil or the tin pie plates. the newly package rice (i think it is bistro?) is precooked. i like to add some frozen veggies that were keeping the cooler cold with the rice and add a precookes chicken balls or beef strips. i always add water , smidge of butter and a little pepper..i give the kids each one to cook themselves. they work great especially if it is dark out..no worries for undercooked meals :)

Its been afew years since we been camping, but I love making fried pototoes, eggs, bacon over the fire in a cast iron skillet. Oh my goodness, the first time I did it over the fire the food was awesome. The food just taste alot better on a camp fire then on a camp stove,I think..

Fried potatos with leftover steak cut up in it. Apples cooked in foil. Potatos cooked in foil. Hamburgers and hot dogs. Pizzas cooked in foil (pita bread with tomato sauce, cheese and pepperoni on top) Grilled chicken. I normally cook with a camp stove, and don't actually cook over the fire too often. It's too hard to control the temp. It's easier to put denser foods in foil and put them near the fire, or use a heavy cast iron pan and put it way up over the flames or coals.

There are so many things that you can make when camping. Just have to remember if you are doing it over a campfire use pots and pans that are going to be charred. Some things that I have cooked over the fire while camping are: 1. chilie 2. fish (any kind trout, wall eye etc) 3. chicken 4. rice dishes 5. spaghetti and meatballs 6. any pasta 7. hamburgers and hotdogs 8. pan fried potatoes 9. cheese grilled sandwiches 10. corned beef and hash
