Are you ever accused of thinking too much?

I have a tendency to over-think things. Do you tend to ponder things, perhaps even obsess, until you have blown them all out of proportion? Is there a simple solution that you have overlooked in your examination of all the angles? Do you make complicated lists and spend hours planning every detail? When does thinking become over-thinking? When does contemplation become obsession?

Hello shizuoka!:-) I have been accused of over-thinking and I tend to agree, sometimes, that I over-think things but not all the time. I think everybody obsess about something or someone, at least at one or more points in their lives, and tend to overlook simple solutions one way or the other. I was told that there was a survey which concluded that Adults often tend to see problems in more complex ways before trying simpler answers or solutions. I don't know about authenticity of this survey or its results, but it sounds true to some extent. Moreover, it is believed that as engineers are in a habit of modeling things mathematically, though in structured way, so they also tend to complicate problems. So, being an 'Adult Engineer' increases the probability that I would over-think. But, I, personally, don't think that I spend hours planning each and every detail of everything I do 'over' the earth and 'under' the sky. I do plan things but all that is possibly, and reasonably, visible in hindsight. Sometimes, I also think that I have under-thought or under-planned things and I do enjoy all the simplicities of life. PS: Aside from the topic of this discussion, I find it uncanny that how much we resemble. If I may, I would like to know that from where you got this avatar? (the only site, in my knowledge, who had this avatar, took it off their list). And, you screen name is also very interesting, is it 'she is you ok a' or is there something else that inspired this screen name? I hope you don't mind me asking and as I told that I over-think sometimes, so naturally I am curious especially because how much we resemble, not only in avatar but also in the writing style. Anybody can mistake you for me. I hope you don't mind asking!?:-)

Kamran - you're right. "word" has it engineers can solve world peace on paper, but can't balance a check book! I have engineers in my family and i have to say - that is true of them! Not that that is bad, good thing engineers can figure things out!But often it just doesn't work the same way in life!

I would partially agree with you, coffeebreak, especially when it's also engineers who make things 'work' on ground! LOL!

Hi Kamran12, Nice to hear from you. Our resemblance is quite interesting. Hmmm. I got the avatar on http://avatars.jurko.net There were over 40 pages of them to wade through. I was looking for something different (ha,ha) that expressed my sentiments to some extent. Shizuoka is the prefecture in Japan that my husband is from--where we met. It is pronounced she-zoo-oh-kah. How about yours?

Are you following me? First the mom discussion, now this? You know me to well! Yes, I do tend to over think. However I would not say to obession. I try to cover all angles and then prepare for as much as possible, but just hoping to cover myself should the worst happen. My problem is that I have to be so careful as I can't afford to waste a single cent, so I have to do all i can to accomodate my income and not go over. I have not had to much good in my life so I am always trying make the best choise possible, hoping it is sucessful. Seldom do things "go right" for me no matter how hard I try. So.... Guess I'd have to say more than over-think - I over concern/worry. Afraid to do something for all the things that could go wrong (and usually do) so I over think my options, hoping to find that one time that will succeed. Not to sucessful to date!

Well, if books like that work for you, I am glad for you. If you get help that way, I am glad they help you.. Not getting any help is a hard thing. But I have read books like that - self help and all, and quite frankly, most of them stink. No offense, just me personal experience. Majority of the cases, they were in the right place at the right time, knew people that could and would help them, had money to deal with it, had this or that needed to accomplish. They weren't in the pits like the common person usually is when they need help. It is nice and fine to tell someone how to succeed if that is all you've known. For instance, I have a hard time listening to preachers these days - I grew up with the ones that preached what they knew - "been there, done that and here's how I did it" mentality. Preachers these days have never had hardships or unemployment and things like that so how can they possibly tell others how to deal with such problems. But again, just my personal experience. Nice to hear the books help someone!

Well, good to hear from you again. Obsession is, perhaps, a little strong. How about over-pondering. Reading what you wrote about things not going right, it made me think of some books I've been reading by Dr. Joseph Murphy. His most famous one is "The Power of Your Sub-Conscious Mind." You might like to give it a read. It is really interesting and I've found it helpful in my personal life.

Sorry if I was presumptuous. He just has a really interesting philosophy and you struck me as the kind of person that might like it. Of course it was just an assumption from a couple of comments you've written, so how would I know? Sorry.

My partner gets me for this all the time. She constantly tells me that I think too much. In reality that is true. I do think to much. However I know I have an obsessive way of thinking. Sometimes I will get ideas in my head and they just won't leave so I end up dealing with really crazy ideas for several weeks at a time and then they leave and then the cycle just starts all over again. It's a pain really.

This is a very interesting discussion you have started here. I often will try to figure something out for a long time. Then when I finally leave it alone and go do something else, "Poof" the answer just pops into my head. LOL

Are they seriously mad, or just irritated? Why would they be mad? My mother or husband will sometimes say, "You think too much!" or "You dwell on the strangest things," but they aren't actually mad about it.

The best way is no thinking. Feeling your body. when you over-think things, you are actully enxiety. so relax your muscle, and then your brain will stop ,obsessing in the relax feeling. It really does good. You can have a try.
