Hit and Run?

I few years ago I was living way out in the country, in Northern Arizona. I worked at a small convenience store in town and returned home late. One night, a little black cat literally jumped into the road and I tried not to hit him, and missed him with my front tires, but heard a thump. I was only going about 25 miles an hour, but slowed and turned around, parking on the verge with my lights on. I exited the car and carefully crossed the road to where she lie. I approached with much trepidation, wondering what condition she might be in, imagining the worst. She was unconscious but still breathing. There was some blood, but no mutilation. I got a towel out of my car, picked her up and took her to my mother's house. We laid her in a box in the laundry room and I went home. The next morning, I took her home and made an appointment with my vet. She had a hurt paw and a dislocated jaw, but was relatively okay. I cared for her for about a month and was going to keep her but she was afraid of my children and didn't like my other cats, so I found a local animal rescue organization that agreed to take her and find her a home. I visited her at the home after a couple of weeks and she seemed very well adjusted and happy. I had felt that I was responsible for this cat since I had caused her injury, whether intentional or not. Some of the locals that visited the store where I worked, however, were not so kind. They made jokes like, "If you have a stray you want to get rid of, just throw it in front of her car and she'll take care of it." Have you ever hit a cat or dog while driving? What did you do? What would you do? Would you feel responsible for it if you caused it harm?

I haven't to my knowledge hit one but if I did like you I would take responsibility for the animal. It isn't their fault after all. I just wish more drivers were like you and took the time to care. Personally the locals who made such jokes should throw themselves in front of a car. To make such jokes is not right and in my opinion shows how callous they are. I wonder if they would feel if it was their pets that got hit.

It was terrible to hear them. I think they were mostly ranchers and hunters that admired big dogs but didn't have much use for cats, other than controlling rodents.

I bet it was. I know I wouldn't have been able to bite my tongue for long with such attitudes. Cats are wonderful beings and they should know better.

I have never personally hit an animal but this story reminded me of this weekend when my fiance and I were out and about we was leaving a friends house and he was doing the speed limit I was looking out f the passenger window as we was going down the road and I saw a squirrel running straight towards the road. Well I just knew if I didnt do something that was it he was definitely about to be hit. All of a sudden I just scream stop and my fiance did just that. As he looked at me crazy I just said you were about to hit a squirrel and he just looked at me with the weirdest face and just went back to driving. I guess he doesnt understand my reasoning for that but I dont like to see anything killed and especially when I am around. So I do commend you for doing what you did.

Thank you for your nice comments. That was nice of you to try to protect the squirrel in your path but possibly dangerous to scream anything when someone else is driving. You never know how they might react. For my own squirrel story: I can remember many years ago when I was taking driver's training, the instructor took me to a place where there was a mountain on one side and a cliff on the other. It was a winding one-lane road with many squirrels running across it. As we started out, the instructor said, "If a squirrel crosses the road, do not swerve and do not brake. You could either cause and accident or go over the cliff." It was a terrible exercise. Every time a squirrel ran out, I braced myself and held my breath. Thank goodness I didn't hit one, but I was so afraid that I would.

I don't think I've ever hit a dog or cat, but if I did, I sure would feel some sort of responsibility, just like you did. If I'm not mistaken, most vets will take in an animal that's been hurt like that, so even if you couldn't care for it yourself, the vet might have taken it on. Good for you for doing the right thing, and shame on those that made fun of you.

I think that there are so many wild animals and strays in that area, no one wants to take responsibility. My vet didn't want the responsibility and actually charged me quite a bit for the exam and medication. Luckily, the rescue home took my earlier monetary contribution into account and didn't charge me for placing the kitty, Olivia, with them.

Thank goodness I have not hit a cat or dog. I did run over a gopher one day when it ran across the highway in front of me, and I felt awful for weeks. I also hit a deer coming out of the mountains in Wyoming once. Well, actually the deer hit me.... it ran across the road and crashed into the side of my car. I stopped and got out but didn't see any sign of the deer, it must have kept on running.

You have sure done the right thing. Its so good of you, that you cared for it till it became alright.I hope every one in this world could have such a tendency.......but unfortunately thats not the case. There are so many strays killed due to accidents on the road. What pains me is the fact that many dont even feel remorse for what they have done. I have not hit a cat or dog while driving.Once I had to brake suddenly to prevent hitting a dog.Thank God. Cheers ! Have a nice day. ========== Every one is born original. Why die as duplicates? =========
