My husband works at an Amazon.com plant as a picker, which basically means he has to run around picking orders and getting them ready for shipping and they have a to meet a certain amount of picks a day. Let me tell you these guys work their butts off and so many can't meet the deadline and so they quit. I know my husband comes home exhausted. So, he just called me on his break and told me that since he was the top picker of the week last week, he received a $5.00 gas card. Are you kidding me! The way gas prices are these days they have the nerve to give him a $5.00 gas card! Now, don't get me wrong, where I appreciate their fine gesture, I just think that with all the money they make they could at least give a little more than $5.00 to these men who work their butts off for them. Especially, when gas prices are so high. That's just ridiculous! What do you all think about this?

I think that I hope his boss doesn't read this as next time he might not get anything at all. Ouch. It is better than what bosses used to give their secretaries, though. After putting up with patronizing nonsense, they used to think they were doing a favor to take us out to lunch. We would rather have had an hour off to go to lunch with out husbands as we saw so little of them. But to be forced to sit politely through a meal with "the boss" positively sucked. I worked as a secretary to put my husband through school, but after he graduated one of the most precious things in our life together was being able to lunch together. Now that we are retired, lunches together are still our most precious moments.

I know everyone keeps saying "something is better than nothing" and I agree to that for the most part but I just think that giving a $5 gas card to someone who works hard for you, when the gas prices are around $3.50 a gallon, is pretty much nothing at all. Trust me, I'm not meaning to sound ungrateful and like everyone also said here, they could have given him sqwat. However, I just think that with a company that circulates around the world and has warehouses all over, they could give a little bit more than what they do, to show their appreciation for their employees hard work and trust me, these men work hard! That's all I was trying to bring out. Needless to say, I do appreciate the gesture, no matter what...

Was it for any gas station, or a specific one? These days he could use up $5.00 just trying to drive the the correct gas station. Couldn't they have least given him $10.00, that would at least by him more than one gallon?

Well let's just calculate this. With average gas prices around $3.50 a gallon, that would buy a mere 1.4 gallons worth of gas. And depending on how far you live from work, might make it home and back, most likely not. LOL

Something is better than nothing I guess. I wish more companies did things for their employees. I also wish they more for their employees in general.

I understand 5.00 isn't much at all these days. I have to add that any sort of gesture to let employees know that the boss is aware of and appreciates them is good. The economy is so bad right now that even companys that appear to be doing good are facing higher overhead costs and unable to give raises. Some are having to lay off people. In your husbands case, it sounds as if it was an unexpected little bonus. it's a nice thought. I know many bosses that would not do anything at all to show a job well done.

Oh my! That is certainly one of those "...it's the thought that counts, I guess" type of things. I love shopping at Amazon- tell your hubby *I* appreciate his hard work...my orders have always arrived super fast and packaged well! (No idea if they come from his warehouse obviously...lol)

Yep, it's definitely one of those moments LOL...Thanks, I will definitely tell my hubby that and I'm sure he will appreciate it on behalf of all the hard Amazon.com employees working in the warehouses around the world

well i am sure that you agree with me that $5- is better than nothing, but you are right. it would be nice if they could put a little bit more effort into it though. but i am sure that they spend a lot of money - depending on the employee number, but seriously, its better than nothing...i get squat!

Yes, I definitely agree it's better than nothing but you will never be able to convince me that they spend nearly as much as they earn. No Way!

I do think if they want to keep their employees then they need to give them more of an incentive than $5.00!!! ALthough I guess the way they see it is theres maybe others out there who would work their butts off for no reward if they are really desperate and could always fill the gap if someone left, its not in my opinion a very good way to treat your employees!

Yeah, exactly, these guys really do run around like chickens without a head on and so, it would just be nice to give them a little bit more to show their appreciation for their hard work. Especially, when it's a company that pulls in the kind of money that Amazon does.
