Free or paid for security software

I have used paid for security software and free softwares too, in fact i'm using the free programs as i speak!. I'm just wondering what other people think about the differences between all packages available to us and are certain packages really worth paying for?. Personally i am more than happy using free software as viruses and other nasties have a hard time surviving. Plus they tend to be less of a system hog too..

It all depends upon your comfort level. If you have data which should be secured then you need to go for something like paid protection otherwise it is cool to go for free softwares. Particularly for companies.

I have used both, but I really like AVG a lot because it doesn't seem to affect my computer much. The paid programs seem to slow the system down so much it's not worth having a new computer with them. I don't think they caught more viruses, AVG seems to catch more than Norton or McAfee when I used them.

I agree with this as a home user, avg is more than enough and it updates everyday which most of the paid for versions do not. I have used both Norton and Mcafee. Norton was a complete system hog and Mcafee; well i won't even bother to say a word about them... Avg seams to suit my needs, both it's anti virus and anti spy ware along side Zone alarm, all of which are free. I do get some nasties but the software on board do their job very well and stop them in their tracks. So free is the way to go in a home user world then??

Yeah, I think free is best as long as it's good quality.
