Making things for Christmas gifts

Do you make things to give out as Christmas gifts? When do you start your projects? I am going to make things this year to give out as gifts. I don't know exactly what I am going to make yet, but I am going to start within the next month or two. I will probably make an array of things from blankets to jewelry. What about you?

For the past Christmas in my life, I always buy the gifts I am giving since I don't have much time to prepare something! I always start buying and making list like 1 week before Christmas. I never tried to start always ahead since I always don't find money to do it! hahaha,,

I can understand that. We normally have to wait until the last minute to get gifts too.

I understand. I normally hide my gifts for family in my closet.

There are several reasons though. like for me, I will only have the big budget for gifts every December, my bonus, the rest of the month, just enough for me and my family! Then, I am just renting and I don't like to stock gifts longer since I don't like my friends and family to see it before the Holiday!

I enjoy making things for Christmas, but have a hard time coming up with the right things. I knit, do needlepoint and embroidery. I've done it for so many years that almost everyone I know has already been gifted with the things they like.

I hand embroider. I learned when I was very young, before I started school, so it's like second nature to me, but I don't do as much of it as I used to. It's not hard to learn. Get yourself a book from the library and give it a try.

We are going to the library Saturday. I will do that. I want to learn how, I just didn't know there were books on how to hand embroidery. Thank you!

I would love to learn embroidery. Do you use a machine or hand embroidery?

I think that this year we will be doing gifts in a jar to save us some money on things. Im hoping to ba ll done with Christmas by November but who knows if that will happen. There are lots of books out there you can pick up at the local library to give you some great ideas.

I think I am going to do some gifts in a jar, but I also want to make other things as well. I hope to be done with Christmas before November.

I have a book here, but there are some on line where you can get the recipes for..Here are some links I found that I thought were interesting, because they have different things like bath salts, for those who can't or don't like the food gifts. (I am going to save these links for myself, gives me new ideas than what I did last year.. ) http://organizedchristmas.com/index-gifts-in-a-jar http://www.allfreecrafts.com/giftinajar/index.shtml http://www.heart4home.net/giftsinajar.htm http://www.craftbits.com/viewCategory.do?categoryID=REC http://www.recipegoldmine.com/foodgift/foodgift.html http://www.razzledazzlerecipes.com/christmas/gifts/index.htm

I did two years ago for Christmas. A few of my sister-i-law's liked my scarf and asked my to knit one for them rather than a store-bought gift. So I began knitting scarves in the early fall (think I'd get them finished early) then my sisters saw me knitting and they wanted scarves, as did my mom-in-law. And then a few of my nieces requested scarves too. So I began knitting on my lunch break in work... and the requests continued with my work mates and then a few members of family members and friends. I ended up knitting non-stop for months...lol The money was nice and it ended up turning into an online business that has now morphed into an online jewelry business. Now I get jewelry orders from workmates... custom orders, little one and two person showings, etc. I still do knit from time to time, even during lunch breaks (but I go out in my car to knit on lunch)There isn't alot of money in scarves... to time consuming, so the ones I do make I offer for sale in the fall and winter on my online site, just to give it a different look.

It's good that you made money and got a business going! I am still in the learning stages of knitting. I wish I already knew how to knit.

Since I make crafts to sell, I must admit that I usually give things that don't sell for xmas gifts, rather than making something specifically for gifts. This usually works out pretty well. That said I'll often pull something from my sale pile for a friend or family member really loves it. It's pretty fun to sprprise then with something they thought I sold to someone else!

I have done that in the past, but I thought this year I would make things special for friends and family.

I was thinking that if I start at least by summer I could have everything ready by Christmas.
