My attitude towards this has changed somewhat in recent years. Previously I was quite content to accept a flyer and listen to sales patter etcetera, unless of course I was heading somewhere and did not have the time.
Nowadays there seems to be a surge of people around the streets and shopping centres who are promoting charities and instead of asking for donations they request a monthly commitment. I am not averse to giving to charity, but will certainly not commit myself to future payments.

@Rosekitty I would not go ahead and comply with such a request either way. making a donation is fine, but I will not commit to a regular payment.

@Asylum i would have to make sure the charity is reputable and not going in the person's pocket

I take it and tell them I'll read it later. lol That usually stops all talk right then. I am usually with my daughter or my hubby when it happens, so I just keep on moving, no stopping means no talking about it.
Same thing in the mall, "morning ladies can I show you" Nope don't have time is what I usually say before they are finished their sales pitch. lol

Yes..being in charge does help by doing what you said..and keeps you from getting upset if they do demand your attention

I was taught if someone is handing me something it is only polite to take a minute and see what it is all about. I would never decline it whether I didn't like it or not, I may say thank-you but I am not interested at this time and let it go at that, but to just not take it that would be very rude..It goes back to the thinking, just how would you if it was you handing out the fliers, how would you feel if someone just declined it and walked by you? Just my opinion, no harm taking a second on our demanding lives to take a look at it.

I usually take the flyer and keep on walking. If they try to stop me so they can talk some more, I might stop depending on whether I have time or not. If I don't have time then I say so and thank them and move on.

Generally I will take the flyer. I will even look at it. The thing that gets me is you will have the same outfit at several places. I'm not gonna donate at each place. And then they will do multiple weekends. I just tell them, I already have a flyer from whatever store I have been too. You can always throw it away if it's something that doesn't interest you.

It is a decision that I make at the time.. If it is something that I would like to learn more about, then I take it.. If it is something that I have no interest in, I don't like to litter or have to hunt a garbage can, then I decline it.. It is my choice and I never feel guilty about making my own choices.. The older I get, the more that I march to my own drummer..

LOL...marching to your own..my same feelings..
I take if its for a band or such but not for someone saying they are trying to help the needy..I then say i know people who need..if they seem interested and talk to me fine but usually it makes them run away..so i know they are false helpers

I'll take the flyer, but I keep walking. I don't allow them the chance to try and make me feel guilty.
