is circumcision necessary?

Philippines

i let my son have his circumcision yesterday. he's already 10 years old. i just want to know why is circumcision necessary or is it really necessary? here in the philippines, circumcision is necessary because of cultural reason. I happened to watched a movie that in Iraq whenever a child is circumcised it is being celebrated. There are some places where circumcision is not necessary. But for me, aside from cultural reason, I think it is for hygienic purposes.

No it is not necessary. It really is the parent's choice, and whether you want your child circumsised or not. My son is cirumsised and I don't regret it. My husband on the other hand isn't. For those who aren't have to keep better hygiene routine with their willies. But overall hygiene is a MUST.

in the philipppines its a cultural and hygiene-wise thing, but in european countries, its not common for the guys there to be circumsized. i heard that in some parts of the philippines, circumcision is not common too, i cant remember exactly where, my dad told me that.. if im not mistaken in cebu? or somewhere in luzon..

Circumcision isn't just for hygienic purposes. My ex husband was uncircumcised when we married. He was sent to Thailand (he was in the military) and I followed a few months later. Since we were newly weds, when I arrived we did what newly weds do best. I told him that he would walk funny for a week after we did our thing...little did I know how prophetic I was!!! He did walk funny for a week and finally went to the emergency room for help. He hadn't pulled the skin back in place and the result was a horrible infection that landed him in the hospital for three weeks!!! He went through a lot of embarrassment and pain for that three weeks...the ER doctor got so excited about the condition of his appendage that he took pictures. Apparently it resembled the final stages of someone going through VD! If I had had a baby boy, I would have had him circumcised immediately just because of the hygienic and the problems my ex had.

You are correct, it is mostly for hygienic reasons. It is not medically necessary. However, non circumsized, men are more likely to get infections than those who have been circumsized.

Circumcision is not necessary at all but it is the practice in Islam and Judaism. As you say it is also a cultural practice in many countries. Here in Canada people make personal choices to have it done to their boys. But it is done just a few days after the baby is born. It is much more painful if it is done at a later age and mostly done at a later age because of a health reason. It is true though that studies have shown the incidence of cervical cancer is much higher in women whose partner is not circumcised.

yes here in the Philippines circumcision is very important as it part of the culture. BOys here if not circumcised they will be bullied by their peers and they will not called as a man but i think mainly it was cultural up bringing. I know some countries don't do circumcision as it also part of their culture and they don't mind.

We opted to have our son circ'd. For hygiene/health reasons mainly.. also I think he'd feel he could relate more to his dad and other guys as the majority of guys are, and my husband is. I'm glad we did, I do not regret it.

I think it is for hygienic reasons and also because it looks better. As a woman I have slept with both circumcised and non and I think it looks far better being circumcised. If I had a son I wouldn't hesitate to do it for that reason alone.

Yes I heard it is much cleaner for men to have it done. It looks nicer too I think. I once heard from a guy who had it done later in life because he had a zipper accident and he said he felt more pleasure in the bedroom after he got it done so I guess it has many other benefits that we did not know of.

The main reason that boys/men are circumcised is for cultural and religious reasons, as others have mentioned. In some countries it has been carried out for many many years as standard, as it was believed that it was more hygienic and healthy not to have a foreskin, but these reasons have since been disproved. In Britain circumcision has never been the custom and a minority of boys have this done, again, usually only for religious reasons or for certain medical conditions, like if their foreskin is too tight.

Hey Yang :) I believe it is more for hygienic purposes or for those who get the circumcision when they are adults, it can be for "vanity" (aesthetic)...

Circumcision is a personal choice. Parents can make a decesion on that. It is being celeberated among Muslim and Jewish communities due to its emphasis on their religious texts. However, it has much health significance too. Studies have showed that it reduces the risk of prostate cancer. Recently, I talked to a mother whose doctor advised to circumcise their son for preventing recurrent urinary tract infections. But mostly circumcision is done in boys a few days after birth.

Yeah being in the Philippines it is part of our culture that we be circumcised. I do believe that it is mainly for hygienic purpose that we have to do that.

Where I'm at the circumcision is usually done before the baby even comes home from the hospital. It's not necessary to be done but it is done for hygiene reasons. But with all the medical malpractice that is going around more and more doctors do not want too do it unless it is for religious reasons.

yes i do agree with you. in islam it's an obligation but yet it's because the hygienic purpose. doctor recommends my 6,5 months old baby boy to be circumcised since he has long foreskin. she warns us that might cause an infection.
