Diabetes and vitamins and suppliments

I am in the very beginning stages of diabetes. I am also a believer that our bodies can often times heal themselves if we take proper care of ourselves. I am not opposed to medicine or medical intervention. I just think that we run to drugs and surgery too quickly and do not explore other alternatives. Having said that, can anyone suggest a vitamin or supplement regimen that would help reverse or at least help my body manage its sugar more efficiently? I have heard that cinnamon helps and several cumin based supplements. Thanks!

You wont like the answer-lol Lots of exerise and lose weight. That is what my husbands doctor told him. He is too stubborn to do that so he has to take several medications.

Lol. Yea, that's the reoccurring theme. Lose weight and exercise. I have been trying. I've lost 15 lbs since January and am trying to get to the gym twice a week but that has not gone as well. My biggest problem is time. I coach 2 of my kids teams and that absorbs most of my free time. I do get some exercise doing that though.

I know its hard to lose weight. When you think you want to eat dont. Make your stomach growl Drink lots of water. No pop of any kind. No sweets. No late night snacks. Dont eat after 6 pm unless you exercise-I have a good idea for that late night exerice-LOL

Here are a few suggestions: 1. If you are overweight then lose weight and get more active. 2. Drink plenty of green tea (at least four cups a day) but monitor your blood sugar carefully when doing so as it can cause quite a drastic drop in blood sugar levels if you're not careful. 3. Take glyconutrients with each meal - glyconutrients are the new "essential sugars" that most of us are not getting unless we are taking these supplements. Unlike normal sugar they actually help control blood sugar levels instead of sending them into orbit. 4. Of course, watch your diet whether you need to lose weight or not. Do not be unwise in your eating choices - though if you are managing to stay well controlled and can adjust your insulin levels then the occassional treat may be alright. Hope these help.

Thanks Mandy. 1. I am and I am! I have lost about 15 pounds since the first of the year and I am almost halfway to my goal. 2. Green tea. Any idea on why it has that effect on blood sugar levels? I am trying to create a comprehensive lifestyle change. Meaning I will be incorporating several changes and I want to understand how the different suggestions may work together. 3. Glyconutrients? I have not heard of those before. Any suggestions on types or brands or can you point me to where you got your info. 4. I am really trying but this I find to be the hardest part. Being Italian, we love to eat all the wrong things! Thanks for the info. I will work to dig up more info on all the things you suggested.

I have heard that about cinnamon as well, but have not tried it. The best thing you can do is lose weight. Exericise is a nice way to keep control of your blood sugar that will benifit you all around. It is kind of funny to say, when ever my blood sugar is higher than it should be I pop in a belly dancing work out DVD, and do it for exactly 1/2 hour, I also probably drink 8 oz of water, it works like a charm every time, my blood sugar always goes down after that.

Depending on the type of Diabetes you have is the course of action you should take. If you are a Type 1 (insulin-dependent, or Juvenile diabetes) then your pancreas can no longer produce the insulin your body needs. treatment: insulin, diet, daily testing (glucose monitor), foot care, treating low blood sugar Type 2 diabetes (most common form) is insulin resistant, meaning the insulin your pancreas produces cannot help your body burn the sugars you are taking in. treatment: monitoring glucose levels, diet and weight control, physical sctivity, oral medications, foot care I have also heard about cinnamon helping control glucose levels. But make sure you speak with your doctor. ANd check out any information you can get on this condition. Magnesium is very important for Diabetics to help prevent cardiovascular (heart) problems.
