When were you picked?

In school, I hated it when the teacher picked captains of two teams, and then each captain picked a member of the class to be on their teams. Someone was always last, which means someone's feelings were always hurt. I was usually picked somewhere in the middle, unless we were playing basketball. When we were playing basketball, I was picked first. I guess they thought since I was so tall, I must be good at it. : ) So where were you picked? First, middle, last? Or did your teacher never do that?

I was usually in the middle except for basketball...I've never been good at that I'm short and can't shoot if I have someone blocking me. I don't think its too fair, however I did have one gym teacher who would have teams pick then when about half the people were left she'd number them off. It made the people that were not picked feel a little better.

Short and tall people are often stereotyped. If you're tall you must be good at basketball, if you're short you can't be good at basketball. Makes me think of the giant basketball George Muresan who was a wash out in the NBA, and the star basketball player, the short Mugsy Bogues could dunk and was a star in the NBA!

I haven't noticed this since a few years ago, but now theres race that is often brought into that not even close to being true stereotype.

I was always picked last and I always felt bad. I have written a story about that whole time back in elementary school and how the kids would treat me.

I'm sorry winterose. Kids don't realize things like that sometimes follow us into adulthood.

I used to play or participate in many sports like Cricket, Volley Ball, Foot ball, Shuttle Badminton and athletics. If it is cricket and volley ball i was always selected in the middle, where as for foot ball i was the last. For athletics i guess that depends on the event. I was the first to be picket for Shuttle badminton since i was good at it.

They did this whenever I was going to school and yes there was always one or two kids getting their feelings hurt, including myself. I was more interested in school work then sports.I guess the other students thought that I wouldn't be any good in sports...which I really wasn't! All except for tether ball. I wasn't too bad at that.

I would have rather been in class than P.E. any day of the week. I was always way taller than anyone, even the boys, and I 'developed' earlier, and somehow my bra strap seemed to get popped like every other time I was covering first base and a kid hit a single.

It really depended on who was chosen to pick the teams. Some of the more snobbish girls would pick like it was a popularity contest. Others would pick basked on skill. I was always good at sports, so unless one of the girls who was a total snob was choosing I was picked toward the beginning. If it was a snob then I was picked about half way through.

I was always last, myself, and I did hate it. I would be picked first for academic competitions, however. I just was very non athletic as a child,or even as a teen.

I think that this is a really horrible way to pick teams. Of course the 'nerd' or the runt of the class is going to be picked last, and as if they need any more self esteem lowering than what they probably already get. I remember one teacher did this and I was chosen toward the end. I wasn't last but it was horrible just standing there while people slowly go over to the other side, leaving you behind. It is humiliating and whoever still picks teams like this should wake up to themselves. It made me hate sport and jocks even more.

What was really sad to me was the fact that there would be two best friends, and one was athletic and one was not. So when it came time to pick teams, the athletic one had to choose. And she DID NOT pick her best friend. I remeber that girl being so sad. Sure, she wasn't any good at sports, but it was P.E., not a huge event. It kind of showed the girl valued winning more than her own best friend.

The teachers always did it, and I was always last. It was so insensitive of teachers to do it that way.

I think so too. Perhaps their P.E. teachers did the same thing to them, so they continued the mean little plan to the next generation.

I was never very good at any sports, and everyone knew it, so I got picked well past the middle, but not the last. I absolutely hated most of the team sports in school when you're supposed to try and win, but when I've played with friends informally, I like it, and it's fun then.

Exactly! I hate competition, but love to play for fun. It doesn't even matter if I'm good at something, I don't like to compete. My sister is just the opposite. She'd disown me if she thought she could win!

Yup! we had it happen too and there was always a sad little face left to the side of the gym....or play ground! I think it's too bad they did that...a lottery would have been better with red and blue or something and you picked a color out of a hat! By the way....so very happy you are back! Woo Hoo!

Usually middle, im rubbish at all sports due to being partially sighted I have no co-ordination I cant kick a ball or hit it with a racket and because im compltely blind on my left side I was always running into people because I didnt see them, in short I was a danger not just to myself but everyone else. However I had plenty of friends and they could always be counted on to spare my feelings and stop me being picked last, they truely were good friends cos they would never win a game not with me

That was so special for your friends to do for you! I was usually picked somewhere in the middle. I was short though...so not too good at sports that required height with the exception of volley ball.....I was short but rocked at that!

Yes, the teachers at my elementry school always did this. I was always picked last in everything. Didn't matter what it was. After my parents divore (i was so young i don't even remember) my grandparents gained custody of the 3 of us. My grandparents wanted the best for us. We lived in an area where doctors and lawyers lived. Believe me those kids were really snobish and cruel to us. Said we were the Beverly Hillbillies. My elementery life was miserable.

So was mine. I wonder if rich people realize how they come off. I don't want to characterize all rich people as snobby, because I know that isn't true. But a lot of them are. And what good is money, if they don't have our respect?

I was a tail ender all the time. Not because I wasn't good at sports, but because I wasn't part of the cool crowd. Pathetic games that used to be played in our younger days.

I was usually the last to be picked for gym class...i didn't have a lot of friends and I wasn't very athletic...it bothered me for maybe a year or two and then after awhile i got to the point i didn't care. I was always the first one picked for teams for non-athletic things...everybody knew i was smart :)

As i wasa skinny little kid in grade school I always got picked last and I just hated it when the teacher who pick out captains of two teams and have them pick out members of our class for each team. But at least I has some teachers so did not do that and just picked out who was going to go on each team and I think that was very fair. No little kid wants to be picked last.

i think that is a horrible thing to do to kids. yes, it was done when i was in school and i was not good in sports so i did not get picked first but i did not get picked last either because i was relatively popular. i always felt horrible for the people who left last all the time and if i was ever picked on the rare occasion to be captain i always picked the underdogs first. the people i knew the other captain would not pick. i hate it when other people are made to feel like they are less than.
