Hidden From The World...

Some of us live in newer apartments or houses and some of us live in older houses or apartments. Since very few ppl are right there when their house or apartment is built there’s no telling what is under the floor or behind the wall. We see a wall, we assume that’s all it is a wall. But what if you accidentally found a hidden room in your home. Perhaps under the carpeting, behind the built-in bookcase or in the back of a closet. A completely unnoticeable room. Your hanging a picture or a hook and suddenly the wall pops open. You’re tearing up carpet and suddenly you find a trap door.
I think it would be great to find something like that…one of the reasons I love old houses. I’ve never found one but there were some places that I’ve wondered about. I would love to find one and make it into a Me room…a room strictly for me…no one else. Something no one ever knows about. Talk about fun.
Years ago they had special secret rooms that ppl could hide in if there were attacks. Some high dollar homes now come with a panic room…a room that you can lock from the inside that no one can get into to keep you safe. They even had a movie with Jodie Foster called Panic Room.
Have you ever found a hidden room? Do you think your home might have one? If you found one, what would you use it for? Would you tell anyone about it?

I've only lived in one house that I think was old enough to have secret hiding spaces in it, and the "hiding spaces" that it did have were pretty easy to find, really--they had visible doors. :)
I'd love it if my current apartment had some hidden space... I'd just love to find it so I could use the storage space! :)

I have always been fascinated by things like this and if I had my own home I would love to have a hidden room that no one knows about.

It would be cool to find a hidden room I would tell no one and us it to get away sometimes. One thing i do that someone some day might find is when I remodel a room I put the before pictures behind the wall. Just think if someone ever tears it down again they will like to see what it was like before.

We built the house we live in, and do not have a secret room, but my husband's been wanting to build one for years. He wants to make it a special place to listen to music, and soundproof, so the music can be as loud as he wants without bothering anyone, and also great sounding.
Before we built our house, we used to live in a big old house that had been a single family house. It had been divided into an upstairs and downstairs apartment. We lived downstairs, and had a back bedroom with a secret staircase to the upstairs. There was a closet with a board nailed up where the staircase was. My upstairs neighbor came down one day, and we pried the board off to see the steps. It was a really neat house, with all kinds of wood paneling, and fireplaces, and we thought it must have been beautiful when it was new. Sadly, after we moved out, the house was torn down.

I have an old farmhouse, it doesn't have a hidden room, but I've thought about creating one. Probably one in my bedroom would be cool. Even cooler would be a secret passageway to get out of the house in case someone came after me. But what if someone found the entrance and came after me through it?

Nope, we don't have any hidden room but It would be really nice if we have one. I mean, like a secret garden or room would be so so so cool and I will tell no one except my family so that we can go there if some bad men went to our house. I think, it will be safe there if we have one... Hmmm... I think I want to have that secret room when I buy or built a house for me in the future. lolz

When we had HGTV I always loved watching this show "If These Walls Could Talk" It was about just the things your talking about. Things found in the walls of older homes as well as hidden rooms was so interesting. Many things that were left by previous owners told on them and their lives. Whiskey bottles, recipes, Kids special toys, hidden movie room are some of what I remember that was on that program. I too always thought how exciting it would be to find a hidden room. Houses history is fun.

I saw that movie. The only secret room I have seen were in the movies. Sometimes I think it would be nice to have a secret room. But if I had one it would probably end up being filled with junk that I have not place to put in the rest of the house. Plus with my luck my grandkids would find it and we'd end up always having to look for them.

I know for a fact that this house doesn't have one, because I can account for all the square footage on the outside, inside.
My parents built the 2 houses we grew up in and since that was back in the 50's and 60's, there was no need for them.
I do think that would be a cool thing to find. A friend of mine found a closed off room at the college she attended, that required climbing out a window over a roof to get to, don't know how she found it.

My Great-Great-Grandmother's house had a hidden room. Well, not so hidden, she knew it was there when she bought the house decades ago, but I didn't discover it until I was about 12. It was really just a storage room, but I loved the fact that most people didn't know about it, and really couldn't see it until you pointed it out. It was in a closet in the master bedroom. The only way you could see it is if you went all the way to the back of the closet, and moved the clothes to the side on the rack in front of it.
I ended up cleaning it up a little, and putting a desk back there. I could go there for hours at a time and just be by myself, perfect for a pre-teen.
The house and my grandmother are both gone now; I miss them both. But when I become rich, I am going to build a house just like it!!!

I've never found a hidden room, but a friend of mine found a hidden storage space. She and her husband were remodeling their home, which was quite old. They tore apart the kitchen flooring and found a trap door in the floor.
They opened it up and found empty booze bottles that dated back to prohibition days. The little space was put there to hide booze during the time when it was banned.
They also found old newspapers in the walls. Apparently, that's what they used to use as insulation!

That would be great fun. I know there isn't anything like that in the house I live in (my boyfriends house) because his dad built it. But if we did move into an older house I would have to look around for something like that. I love older houses. It would be great to restore one or just live in one. The only house I lived in briefly that was really old still had the original hardwood. It still had the button shape under the table area that they pushed for their slave to come. Very interesting. That's the only thing I found though.

It just goes to show how people are the same all over, I always dreamed of having a room with a secret room too. I never found one. But where I live now has connecting cupboards, from one bedroom to another and that is kinda cool. It is the closest I will ever get to a secret room.

I don't know of any houses with secret rooms personally but I used to have a friend who's family bought and moved into an old house with a secret room. Only way to know about it is to look in a certain closet that has the secret door to it. She told me it's a small room. Kinda more like a storage room but they turned it into their office and keep all their valuables in it as well. Noone knows of it's location but her and her family. I would love to have a secret room all to myself where I can go and escape from everyday life. One with a window that can't be seen from the outside.

Oh what a marvellous idea - I would love one of those! Unfortunately my house is really small and I know there aren't any hidden rooms and definitely no trap doors in the floor (it is concrete floors) but I would love it if there were! I could just imagine the kids when they couldn't find me! xxx

Mmmm...sounds like you probably love movies that do have homes with hidden rooms..I LOVE those kind of movies, and this just popped into my head,..one of my favorite children's books was Nancy Drew's The Hidden Staircase...Oh and don't forget The Man In The Iron Mask movie..ever see that...that palace was chock full of hidden rooms and passages
LOL I've seen a few programs about luxury homes (one of my wishful thinking, daydreaming kind of things) and they always have hidden rooms--usually just a hidden bar though. If I were to have my own home I would love to have some kind of hidden room...uh, for what not a clue...but still would love to have one
My apartment building is fairly old, maybe 80 years old...and I do have a bit of a mystery on my hands here. In the larger closest, way in the back wall is ....get this ...a phone jack for phone hook up....to this day I'm still trying to figure out, now why on earth would there be a phone jack for a phone in a closet???????
