A few months ago Hubby and I went to see his VA doctor. While we were in the office he tells a joke.
A woman goes to see her Doctor. The Dr. asks the woman how many times has she been married.
“Three times”, she replies.
“What happened to your first husband”, he asks.
“Oh, he died”, she says. He asks how did he die.
“He ate poisonous mushrooms”, she replied.
“Really?” he asks.
“Yup”, she answers.
“And your second husband?” he asks.
“He ate poisonous mushrooms”, she says.
He looks at her suspiciously “I see”, he says “and your third husband…poisonous mushrooms?”
“No” she says, “cracked skull”.
“Cracked skull??” He says surprised.
“Yup, he wouldn’t eat the d*mn mushrooms”.
I was so surprised and tickled with it. I’ve never had a Dr. tell me a joke before. Have you ever went to a Dr. and had them tell you jokes or do something to make you laugh to ease the tension or just to help you relax? Are you nervous when you go to the Dr.? Do you tell your kid’s jokes or anything to help them relax when they have to go?

No I have never gone to a doctor that joked about things in the office but I do remember the doctor and the anesthesiologist competing with who had the better sun tan one of them or me, when I was going in for an operation.

LOL that is a funny one. Doctors are people too with sense of humors like the rest of us. My OBGYN is the best. he is so friend and funny, i always look forward to see him. I know when i go there it's like seeing a friend and not my doctor.

lol Never heard that joke b4 now. The drs. we go to don't tell jokes really but have other creative ways to help us relax. Like my daughter for instance, did you know she has Barney living in her ears? and Winnie-the-Pooh living in her throat? lol That always gets her giggling cause the dr. would be talking to them both while he is checking her out. I tend to be forgetful when visiting the dr. and he'll end up joking with me when we are talking and he catches me saying something I forgot. Like recently at the gyn. office. He was asking me what meds. I was taking. After telling him, he then asked what med. problems I was having. After saying I was on Lexipro and forgetting to mention I had depression, he caught me there and we laughed about it. I like him for a gyn and will go back to him again.

This is a small town, and my doctor has known me a long time, twelve years or so. He became my doctor about the time first hubby was diagnosed with ALS. I have had various ill people and dependent people live with me over the years, and they all used my doctor. He always asks about all of them, and we do have chit chat, not necessarily jokes, but some give and take conversation. I am very satisfied with my doctor. The doctor I was referred to for my hysterectomy took the time to take a huge sliver out of my hand, because it was hurting me, and with my mom dying and me needing the surgery, etc. I was just not having time to have it taken care of, and it was beyond what anyone could do with just tweezers. Again, although we were "strangers" he was very good with his manner, and we had give and take that made me feel respected in my opinions. I have had very good luck with doctors, but I seldom see them.

I think I would like your doctor. Someone who takes the time and talks to you and helps you relax. It sounds like he cares and tries to be personable.
I think the VA deserves a nice note about him. Too often the VA gets a bad rap.

Actually I like the idea of a funny doctor. Many people are nervous about seeing a doctor and if this relaxes patients I think it is great. I worked around doctors for many years and some of them were just like your friends who made time for you and others thought they were very important and made you feel stupid if you asked a question. I'd rather have a doctor who has a sense of humor and makes the patients feel comfortable.

I do not like to go to the doctor and I would so love to have one that would tell jokes or something like that to ease the tension but now days I can't see that happening since they are so booked up. You just have so much time for your doctor to see you and if you go over that time you are charged more money, at least my doctor is that way. My daughter used to work for doctor's, setting up appointments, and she said most do the same.
Nice to see that some doctor's still do have a sense of humor.

I've had a doctor like that and it was such a tension reliever. He was such a wonderful doctor in which he also became such a good friend in a way that I felt I could talk to him. I don't see him anymore because of moving around so much with the army. Hubby's retired now and we don't live in the same town that the doctor is in but I sure do have some fond memories.

I've never had a doctor make a joke, but I've seen some doctors that have been a joke. One doctor told me I wasn't pregnant and that I should go on a diet and exercise 4 hours a day to get rid of my excess weight. Um, hello! I was 7 months pregnant! Another doctor told me that my bladder infection was caused by not keeping my knees together and that if I did,it would go away. Nearly ended up in hospital from the infection starting to spread to my kidneys! And the latest, I was told that there was a problem with my baby (26 weeks pregnant) so went for better scans etc only to be told that there was no problem and that my doctor needed to stop sending women hours away from home for scans that could be done at the local hospital first.

Now that was nice. I cant remember being told a joke but my doctor just has a way of talking and making you respond to him while he's doing his checks. You respond to what he's saying and he just pops in a question that has to do with your health without you even realising. You answer and its back to talking again if he has no follow questions.

He sounds like a nice doc to me. I like the joke too. My hubby went thru the VA for his medical care. I was so impressed with everyone that we incountered thru the VA. Everyone always treated me and my hubby like he was a multi million dollar paying patient. They all treated him with kindness, they were all so caring. Myhubby recieved better quality care thru the VA then he ever did with regular doctors and hospitals.

I have a doctor like that and we have a very good relationship. He jokes or I joke. When I first see him I address him by saying, What's Up Doc??? He smiles and says, Hi stranger. I have two doctors and sometimes I go a long time without seeing him.
Actually, I like to joke with my other doctor too. I like to tease him about not coordinating his colors. I say, you must not be married cause you look like you got dressed in the dark. No self-respecting wife would let her husband out the house looking like that. He thinks that is funny. I don't think he is married though.

I am lucky in that all the doctors I ever see in my pratise are very friendly and I get on well with them - especially the one I usually see - he is the same age as me and our daughters are the same age - he is always teasing me and joking with me , but at the same time if I need to speak to him about really important things I know I can talk to him about anything and that in itself is reassuring! xxx

What a cute joke!
It sounds like that doctor has a great bedside manner.
I think it would make it easier to go to the doctor if he isn't so into the doctor stuff and takes the time to tell a joke. My doctor isnt' like that at all. It's all business.
I do tell my kids jokes when I hear them. If they are doing something that stresses them out, I try to break that tension with joking around with them.
