We just drove back from Connecticut and was listening to one of the local radio stations. They were talking about a bank that had closed it's branch office and Friday due to an awful smell. They tracked it down to a check that someone had deposited. The person who deposited it said the man had changed motor oil and then handled the check resulting in the smell. I can't imagine a piece of paper smelling so bad that it resulted in a bank building being closed. What is the worse smell that you have ever smelled?

I think the worst smell I ever smelled was, in fact, in Groton, CT. Sometimes I would visit my cousins there in the summer and the town had a penicillin factory. The smell was horrible and you could smell it all over town. This was a long, long time ago and I don't know if the plant is even still there. The second worst smell was Puget Sound in Washington state. UGH! Nasty smell.

A penicillin factory - nice! That does not seem right, something to make us healthy smells bad. I remember driving by Niagara Falls as a kid and it smelled pretty bad there, so did the steel manufacturing in Lackawanna.

WE lived by the Lilly penicillin factory in Indianapolis, Inianna. I was trying to decide between that or another , then I read this. It is an AWFUL smell. You can re-create it for your self if you have any penicillin. Just stick you nose in the bottle and sniff real hard. That's pretty close.

Well penicillin is made from mold, so I guess that's what the smell was from.

How hilarious! I can't imagine something the size of a check holding that much odor either! Sheesh! Someone has some sensitive nose thing going on! Worse smell I've ever had at home is a skunk that decided to rest right under my window every night. He finally decided he didn't want to stay, thank God! LOL But it was so bad at one point that even with the window's closed and a bowl of vinegar to take the smell out you gagged going into my room. It took forever for the stench to leave my bedding!

That would have to be bad. And you were probably scared to make a noise, since that could trigger more spraying. You poor thing. I'll bet Febreze or Lysol did not help at all either.

The worst smell I have ever smelled is a toss up between the rotting animal flesh smell of road kill, and this one time when the neighbors cat came into my house had a bowel movement on my son's bed upstairs. Even though it was upstairs it was terribly potent and we could smell the horrid stench all over the house.

My goodness! One little piece of paper with motor oil on it? My uncle was a bit of a grease monkey, so we had a lot of rags and clothes and what-not with motor oil on them, and I can't remember the scent ever getting that bad! Whoa! The worst smell I've ever had the misfortune to experience was, I regret to say, a friend of mine, whose name I'll not mention. I know he showered. I know he washed his clothing, a mutual friend of ours even occasionally washed it for him! But, no matter what he did, or we did to help him, he still had an eye-watering case of body odor. The friend of ours who helped him out with his laundry on occasion even had to throw some of his clothes out, because they still reeked beyond comprehension, even after multiple washings with soap, bleach, even white vinegar! We've discussed how we would really love to help him out by discovering the source (something in his diet?) and eliminating it for him.

Well, The stinkiest thing that I can usually find is my pair of socks. They always smell bad, no matter what I do with them. The other things that smell bad to me is the smell of blood. I hate the smell of blood, and unfortunately, I got hit on the nose and it was bleeding like a drain. After sometime the blood inside the nose clotted and started to give off a very bad odour. I had to bear with that odour for 2 days as the clot was there inside the nostril and no matter how much I tried I couldn't clean it . There was a restriction as well cos after the hit my nose was paining a lot and I couldn't handle it in a better manner and clean off the clot. bourne

I cannot imagine that being a reason to smell bad enough to shut down a bank. I suppose they were thinking of some kind of criminal act. That is strange.

Wow, that is odd. There must have been a chemical reaction with the paper? I think the worst smell I've encountered is skunk spray out in the country. Ewwww! If you are driving by the odor lingers in your car until it is aired out thoroughly! Yuck!

I think the worst smelling thing - at the moment of smelling it has been bloody tarry stool - though I am sure that rotting flesh is much worse. as far as long term smells, there is a wood processing plant not too far away and that has an awful sickly sweet scent to it. a paper plant in waussau wis. smelled like sauerkraut sulpher - rotten egg smell is pretty rank too! my dog reeks - no matter if she was just bathed or not.

worst smell..lemme see.. i guess the winner is when i was working in a hotel in arizona, these people decided instead of throwing their trash out every day (they were there a week) they would stick it on the room's balcony. well and good, right? wrong. 115 degrees out, full sun,and the bags were full of ..DIAPERS.lots and lots of diapers. i almost passed out when i opened the door. that room and the one under it were unrentable for several days while they were hydrocleaning the concrete balcony.

Motor oil doesn't seem like something that would smell bad enough to close a bank. Now if someone defecated on the carpet in the lobby, that's one thing. I don't have a sense of smell (I lost it about five years ago) so I can't really answer that question because it's really hard to remember smells.

the stench of rotting potatoes. When I was a young bride I levt asack of potatoes setting on the kitchen counter instead of refrigeratering them. A few days later I came into the kitchen and wondered what that putrid smell was. I opened up the bag and almost heaved. the smell was just horrible. two thoroughly rotted potatoes and did they stink.

I find it difficult to imagine a smell so awful coming from a piece of paper. Does motor oil have a bad smell? I would have thought it just smelled oily! I don't eat meat and I am very sensitive to meat smells. I can't go near a butcher's shop because all I can smell is blood. The smell of cooking meat is like burning flesh and turns my stomach too. It's not that I'm a vegetarian as I eat fish and don't mind a fishy smell. I don't object to people eating meat, but I can't understand vegetarians who will happily cook meat for other people.

That's really strange. Can a check really smell that bad? What did they do to that check? The worst smell I ever smelled was the smell of a cat's feces.I stepped on the feces of a cat by mistake,it was really so stinky that I had to throw my slippers away. From then on,I hate cats,I will never ever to allow a cat in my room.
