Sticker shock at the grocery store

Tonight I stopped at the grocery store to pick up a few things, one of which was canned beets. I've bought the store brand before for 59 cents... tonight, it's 99 cents. I have beets growing in my garden, so I'll just wait for them. Have you come across something that jumped that much seemingly overnight? What do you do when it happens? Buy it anyway? (Believe me, I thought of it, but my frugal nature won out!)

Oh I know I've seen some things go up but a few others things go down, it surprises me actually. Milk here as gone down by $.60 in the past month. It was up to $4.19 a gallon and now it's down to $3.59 so go figure. Just when you think you figured things out they change it on you I have though with some things once I saw the price put it back. I buy cheap, whenever possible. I go with generic or sale items first. If it's something we need though what choice do you have? You can only get around so much. We do have to eat after all and they know it.

Wow, I don' think I've seen anything go down lately. It's true that we have to eat, so they've got us there. It's irritating, although I know most of the prices have reasons to rise.

I know it surprised me when I saw milk go down. What gets me is the price of eggs. They've practically doubled in the past few months, at least around here. I know there are reasons for prices going up but it would be nice if the money we got went up as well.

Yes, eggs have come up quite a bit here, too. I can get local organic eggs for the same price as the grocery store. Isn't that ridiculous? It would be nice if the income increased as fast as the prices, but I think we'll just have to find ways to deal with it.

There were some economists on television discussing the poor first quarter returns for retail. People are just not buying clothes, shoes, household goods, etc. unless absolutely necessary. The experts agreed that commodities were going to "save our economy" so we would see lots of price increases in all the things that keep us poor, like food and utilities. The groceries are out of sight Milk, cereal, eggs are all noticeably higher. I use my savers card and coupons. Unless it is something absolutely necessary, I will not purchase the item that has gone way up in price and wait for it to go on sale. If it means changing my recipe a little bit, that's o.k. or I will substitute a different ingredient.

I agree. I just find ways to do without. Even if it means waiting a couple of months for beets. It really doesn't hurt to do without a few things now and then. I don't even want beets this morning.

I have changed what food goes in my shopping cart. Several foods are just to high for me to buy. I'm buying less meat, as its higher every single week. The one item that has been lower is milk and I'm lactose intolerant, so I can't take advantage of this savings.

Buying less meat is one thing we can do. I, too, have stopped buying some things (besides canned beets!)

Wheat, Rice, Milk. All the prices have gone up and not just a little but a lot. Last December I could get a 50 pound bag of wheat for around $13 today I got some at the store for $25 and that was on sale. The price of lifes necessitys has gone up so much we are all in for a shock some way or another. Lots of farmers are swithcing from growing food to growing things to make bio fuel and the prices of farm things are shooting up faster then anything else. I buy what I need and it is still cheaper to buy wheat then to buy junk food so I bought it.

It's true that farmers are growing corn for biofuel instead of feed, but I don't think that's the entire problem. Weather and political problems add to it. It's smart to buy wheat like that.

while i am not a fan of canned beets, i have noticed most of the prices of grocery items are skyrocketing (how come my paycheque isnt too???) anyways, we will just have to have a bigger garden this year!

I think a bigger garden is the real answer!

I have definately put things back on the shelf at the grocery store once I got a look at the price. It's getting harder and harder to stay on budget with ym grocery bills. I shop at the "no-frills" store that had cheaper prices, rather than the pretty supermarket. It's super crowded so lot of people must be having the same thoguht. At least becuase of that the meat and producemove pretty quickly and are very fresh. It's get so crowded thoguh that my boyfriend and I do out food shopping first thing in the morning. If you wait until after 10am, forget it. You can't even move your cart!

I've always gone to the no frills stores and there does seem to be an increase in business there. It's not that crowded here, though, so can shop almost any time, except right after payday.

The thing that I noticed jumping in price was milk. Yep - still buy it anyway. Don't know what else to do about that. I did get some powdered milk to use when I cook now.

Using powdered milk is good, but the price of that will rise, too, I think. I think it's time to get serious about conserving and substituting a lot of things.
