What do you think about a member's user image?

Here in myLot, I often see members use images of other things or people, a character in a particular animation or simply a drawing (like mine ) Then, there are also those that really use their own image. I find a bit of recognition to those who do that since they are confident enough to post their actual photos and not simply use other images as their avatars. I'm not saying that those who don't use their own actual images as avatars here in myLot, or in any other site for that matter, are not confident. Though I have long hair compared to the image I use, I just fancy using this image of mine which I have just drawn. Sometimes, a member has a very nice image as an avatar, it somehow implies to me as well that he or she has a nice personality. How about you guys? What do you think about those who use their actual images as avatars and to those who use other images that are obviously not them at all? Thank you in advance for sharing your thoughts

Well, this is not me in my avatar. I really decided not post my photo with my personal reasons..And no need to share it. Hope you will respect that. I choosed this image..because it describes of who i am..not the outside apprearance but what is deep inside with me. The image shows my emotions and what's i really feel...It's describes what inside of me. With in me..

I wouldn't insist your reasons if you don't want to Hmmm, you made the image yourself, may I ask that? Or what can you say about those who actually use their own portraits as their user image in their profiles? Thank you for responding

I see your reasonable points on deeming users who post actual images of themselves as brave. Better certain than not, I suppose. Thank you for responding

Well, they are BRAVE ENOUGH to show their real identity of this kind of community. They are a type of person that you can say a "real one". They are not afraid to put their real photo and at the same time they are willing to take risk if whatever happened. Sometimes, it's also dangerous to put your real identity. Their are a lot of person using some other faces and that will cause to a WRONG identification. Except for those who using a popular faces like hollywood stars. There will be a lot of What if?(negative). For example: What if someone likes you then start to stalk at you and knowing that person is insanely inlove with you and its a killer! Thru the picture and other information that you posted and shared to a website enable him to follow you wherever you are. Your picture that you posted is one of his guide to know your identity. So? It's possible! It's scary thing. Websites is not that safety and secured of this kind of circumstances. That is only one of the example of the possible situations. So, we should becareful!

Well for me, the reason i always use my own pictures as my display pic is because i want people to have a sense of who they are communicating with and responding to basically. When i am responding to a dsicussion here on mylot and i can actually see a picture of the person that i am talking to, it just makes me feel a whole more compfy in a sense. I dont think that there is anything wrong with having your own personal pic as youe avatar. It basically just shows what type of person that you are in a sense what you think about yourself. And everyone is not the same. SOme people just will nt post anytype of pics up on any website clarifying weho they are. It has nothing to do with how friendly they are or not. Some people just have different ways of doing things.

So an actual image grants you assurance. Well how does alternate images for user image or avatars that aren't actual protraits of the user imply to you? Thank you for responding

I think staff member of this site would take down any obscene images uploaded by anyone, more so if it were used as a profile image or as an avatar.

It doesnt bother me at all. Now if the picture happens to be of some obscence nature then i know that i would feel a little bit uncompfy about responding or posting an answer from this person.

I don't really think anything about it to be honest. My avatar is me but it's only been that way for the last couple of months. Before that I was always a shoe. I will probably change it back to a shoe eventually but can't be bothered looking for another image at the moment. I understand why some people prefer not to use their own picture, and people will have various reasons for not doing so. Actually I quite enjoy building up a mental image of people on here that I talk to regularly, it would be interesting to see if they looked the way I imagined them to look I suppose but it doesn't really matter to me. It makes me a bit uncomfortable when people use pictures of their children, I personally wouldn't do that but that's their choice of course.

Indeed, building up a mental image of the user that hadn't used an actual portrait of themselves is quite interesting. And then we'd be surprised when we do actually see them if our impression were correct or not at all. A shoe, followed by an actual image, and then back on another shoe image? Can I ask with a selection? What does it imply to you when you see members use children as user images or avatars? Thank you for responding

I must admit, I would not post a picture of myself on this, or any other forum, as a user pic. I worry sometimes when I see people using images of their little children too. I prefer to use my lovely blue dragon instead, to me he represents me perfectly and I am happy with him on here.

Why do you worry about those who use children as user images or avatars? Is the current image your work by the way? Thank you

The dragon is part of a series of pieces of artwork that a friend of mine sent me as I collect dragons and love pictures of them. I guess I'm just a little old fashioned when it comes to images of children used as avatars. :-)

You collect anything related with dragons? You have figurines as well? Asian dragons? Medieval dragons or both? Old fashioned when it comes with images of children used as avatars? You mean using images of children are old fashioned? I just don't quite get it, sorry..

I am one that uses a photograph of myself as an avatar. I started the site by using one that my husband took of me in NYC. He had a red filter on the camera when he took it. A lot of users have told me that they recognize me by the red photo, so when I wanted to update the photo I was at a loss. The NYC pic was the only red one that I had. Then I decided to take another more recent photo from my hard drive. First I turned it black and white with photo editing software. Then I added the red. Problem solved! It doesn't matter to me if someone uses their own picture or uses something else. I have seen some really cute animated ones! I don't care for the green generic ones that mylot give you initially though. So the first thing I did here was try and figure out how to change that!

There are some people who assume that the people in the avatar looks like them or they want to be thought like the one in the avatar. I prefer using an abstract image as an avatar cos its something illogical like me. I like the way some people make abstract images and I love them a lot. The one which I have for present is my hand taken by myself , through the in built web cam from my MacBook. I love images like these which are way out of thoughts and are abstract. I do not like my own photographs. So I never use them as my Avatars. Although there are many poses which my friends have advised that can be used as avatars, but I prefer to keep it to something like the one I have now... bourne

for those people who uses their own picture as their avatars, i salute them because they aren't shy to share their true faces. they probably want other people to know them as who they are physically. i am not saying the opposite about the other people who don't use their own pictures like me though. i have used my own picture as my avatar before but i thought it would be cute to use other images. for me, i want to convey cuteness because i like cute stuffs. i have used images of carebears before because i really think they are cute. and then i settled for my avatar now because i want myLotters to think that i am a person who loves to smile and be happy. aside from that, i think those who use other images as avatars just want to share their interests, like me, using an anime character would show that i am interested with animes. you too right? some uses pictures of cats and dogs and they probably want to show people that they love dogs and cats as pets.

Actually, I dont really care about the avatar because ussualy I only read their response for a discusiion. Although I prefer if people can put their own picture so that I can see how they look like. Anyway it's about choice...so it doesn't bother me alot... I use my own picture. The picture was taken by by bf (now my husband) when we went to a beach festivals 2 years ago..(LOL it's kinda old picture of mine..) I have a shorter hair now..

Indeed, depends on the user's choice and reasoning for having the current image as their profile avatar. How would the actual photo of a member influence your impression of them? Thanks you

I don't think any less of a person for not posting their own picture as their avatar. I know that everyone has their reasons for making the decisions that they do. Sometimes I wish I could see a picture though, because I think it makes it easier to identify with who you are talking to. You can get a little better sense of someone's personality by seeing their picture.

I guess we could still judge a book by its cover, I suppose. Indeed, there's that immediate interaction the actual photos communicate compared to alternative images which leaves up pondering on the actual image of the user along with the preconception that we have built from the one that they have provided. Thank you

I like the big variety of avatar images there are at myLot. I don't have any photos of myself so I got my image from a site which provided a choice of free avatar images to use. I don't have green hair but I do have a pointy chin like the woman in my avatar. I have been using her in several forums and on profile pages so I now associate myself with her, and I do like her green hair. If I see a portrait I never know if that is the real person. One of my myLot friends has an avatar photo of a man, so I assumed it was their portrait, but now I think it is a photo of a TV personality and the member is a woman. I really like all the cute kids, the abstract designs and the animal avatars. These seem more individual and instantly identify the member to me, whereas some of the photos are less clear or less memorable.

Hey, how about those who have no avatars? HahhaaIn the beginning, in fact I was too lazy to even bother putting an avatar - you know there's like so many social networking sites like Facebook, Friendster & MySpace to name a few. My wife is one who always like to change avatars or update pics but I thikn I'm too lazy 2 do thatWell, in fact I like to put my real pic more so people can just see the real me. Usually I love to put my own cheeky pics like having squinted eyes or something that's just me, hahah

hmm, I think the image they use for their avatars indicate their interest/hobbies, either anime, character game drawing, etc. Sometimes it indicates their personalities or that image they use have some of their traits. Instead of using their actual image they used an image that can nearly describe them. About the avatar that I used, Tifa is one of my favorite character and I'm bit like her - in terms of hairstyle, ;p

I use an image of myself, but not for any other reason than I just wanted to. I don't really pay a lot of attention to the different avatars nor do I feel differently towards the ones of self image than to the ones that aren't. I look more at the discussions than anything.

well if they post their pics publicly in a website, it usually implies that that person is confident to show his or her face to thousands of people. especially in a forum where you voice out your opinions on various subjects. but then again, that doesnt mean that the people who dont do that arent confident, they just prefer to remain anonymous, myself for example. and regarding those people who use avatars of movie stars or other people, well, i do that sometimes, LOL especially if i find that person in the avatar attractive. so to the "owners" of the avatars that ive used, just be flattered that i used them. LOL dont get mad, hehe.

That's what I also mentioned in my post in this discussion Some people are confident to be themselves as well in their user images or avatars while, other who use alternates aren't automatically deemed not confindent for not using their own image. Indeed, they're alredy using user names that aren't there real names, certain people would also use different images. Thank you for your response!

hmm. I wonder what having my cat as my avatar means? I will eventually put a picture of myself up here, I have to find the CD with all my pics on it. I've just gotten a new laptop and have no pictures on here, except the one with Dolce(my cat). As for your question, I like seeing both people with pictures and people with avatars. The avatar they choose shows a little of their personality and I love the people who change them up often, it gives me something to look at.

some use image other than their photos merely because they believe or they have a fascination of that image or its an icon or symbol that implies their personalities..for those who use their photos as their avatar,i believe or may think they are confident enough..

That character image you have as an avatar is a character that gives the impression of being a stern, distant and cold man who goes about his business silently, without attracting unwanted attention. I just don't know if it implies your personality or not at all and merely a fascination as you have mentioned. I believe they are indeed confident enough when they use their own images since, they wouldn't be if they didn't at all.. but there are other possible reasons as well. Thank you for participating
