1. Have you checked the transmission fluid? if it doesn't guage, try fill it up to the guage level. 2. It might be leaking if it doesn't guage, tell your mechanic to check it for you. 3. If changing the transmission is the only option, you better change it to prevent further embarassment. nice day.

I'm not expert on transmissions, but it sounds as though it's time for you to get a new one. You might concidering contacting your mechaninc and seeing what he would charge. This is unless you know someone who could do it for free. Transmissions can be expensive depending on the vechicle you have. Best of luck!

It sounds like one of three things. First, it could be low on transmission fluid (if it's an automatic). Second it could be time for the bands to be adjusted...sorry I don't know what the bands are, you need a mechanic to translate that for you. Third, you might need to replace the transmission. Does it move at all? Check the fluid level and if it doesn't have any, add fluid and see what happens. Adding transmission fluid is the cheapest fix and if it solves your problem great, if it doesn't then you didn't spend a lot of money eliminating that probable cause from the list. I kind of lucked out, as I learned a lot from my Dad as I was growing up. It is handy as a female knowing things about automobiles-its saved me and my Mom a ton of money with unscrupulous mechanics trying to sell us repairs that we didn't need.
