What constitutes self defence?

The movie titled; A Killing In A Small Town (1990) starring Barbera Hershey in the lead role is a screen-play premised on a true story. The story which centres on the suspect Candy Morrison (Hershey) is charged with murder, but in the end is found 'not guilty' by a jury who views her actions as 'self defence'. Morrison's actions involved weilding an axe 41 times at her attacker. Morrison's attacker initiated the assault because the former had an affair with her husband. Surely weilding an axe 41 times at an attacker is retribution, not self defence?

I have heard of victims so pumped up with adrenaline that they fired or hit their attackers more times than was necessary, but 41 times does sound excessive. An ax is heavy and I don't think someone could lift it up and down that many times without realizing what she was doing.
