HomeMade - The wife's Home Made Chicken Noodle Soup

Well after a huge pot of my wife's home made Chicken Noodle Soup, Lot's of meds, a lot of cups of tea with lemon and honey and with kind words from many friends here in my daughters discussions I am feeling a bit better. Still not up to par but feeling good enough to do a little bit here. I've resolved all my discussions and have done a little yard work. More on that forth coming. This is a photo of the pot of soup my wife makes. yes it is a large pot but it is usually all eaten within a day or two. She boils a whole chicken, adds onions, celery, boullion cubes carrots, pepper, garlic, and other secret ingerdients. Man does this clear your chest in no time. This shot was taken the next day she had made it and it is well over half gone. Does Chicken noodle soup really help a bad cold? Or is it just anything hot and liquid that helps a cold? HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

Yum, that soup looks very good..And yes it does help the cold, not because it is a hot liquid, but because it is a natural anti-biotic, especially if she put in a lot of garlic.. Glad to hear you are feeling better, keep eating that soup and get plenty of rest, you will be yourself in no time..

I think someone did a study on this and found it does have some sort of medicinal quality, versus the cold or flu, etc.. Although my memory could be wishful thinking. As it just sounds as though it ought to be good for whatever ails us! Especially with the garlic however! (IN your wife's very healthy sounding recipe.) I mean that's where the legend of the garlic with anti-vampire qualities came from I'm sure.. It is known for antiseptic, antibiotic, and also anti virule characteristics..

Thanks. I think it's the onion and garlic and pepper in it that helps to clear the nasal passages is all. Therby aiding in better breathing and a quicker recovery. ??? HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!`

I am glad to hear you are feeling better and, your wife's soup looks really good. I have a few really good soups that I make as well. And, I do think that soup can do wonders for a cold...not usually my colds but, other people's colds. My sister-in-law and her family told me of a trick that they came up with to make your throat feel better when it is sore. I don't know why it works, only that all 5 of them swore by it. They said that if you eat those spicey barbeque frito chips and drink chocolate milk, the chips sort of scratch up your throat and the milk coats it nicely and by the next day, you are back to normal. I have not tried it and, frankly it sounds sort of gross! LOL! Anyway, I am glad to see you getting back to normal.

This sounds like an odd way to rid oneslef of a sore throat. Those chips would make my throat sorer I think. And it does sound gross as well. Thanks bunches. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

LOL! I agree but, all of them swear by it. My niece was sick while they were here visitin. Headache, sore throat, fever, all of it. They got her some of those fritos and chocolate milk and she was fine the next day. So weird. I think she had a massive attack of allergies. They are really bad in Georgia and that part of my family (on the hubby's side) are from New York where they haven't hit there allergy season yet. And, both my hubby and I never had allergies until we moved to Georgia so, it can really be bad for guests and transplants when they come here. Anyway, I think that the resulting belly ache I might get from such a remedy wouldn't quite be worth the trouble to lose a sore throat. I'll take my Advil! LOL!

Scientific studies have shown that homemade chicken noodle soup with secret ingredients does help a cold. Its the "secret" ingredients that does it. I can't tell you the secret cause then it wouldn't be a secret anymore. Its passed down the generations to just the women in the family. I am glad to hear that you are feeling better. Welcome back......

Normally husband and wives shouldn't have secrets. But in this case its ok. Its a girl thing, if you find out the secret then the soup won't help you anymore. It will be just ordinary soup. You can get that at the grocery store in a can.

Yes, chicken soup helps a cold, the steam and the liquid help loosen you up. Garlic is nature's pennicillin. The root vegetables add a lot of minerals to it.

I would think so. I go to the oriental food section in the grocers and get candied ginger to chew on when my throat is itchy and I am stuffy.

Boy that soup looks good! I have heard that there is actually some medicinal benefits from Chicken Noodle soup. Hot liquids, I think, help clear the sinuses and the garlic itself is good for you...and onions too I believe have some healing properties.

Hi Grandpa Bob, It's great to see you here. I'm very happy to hear that you're on the mend, and trust that you'll be 'a ok' in a very short time. I've checked out the photo of your wife's chicken soup, and it looks so good. I'm sure she's a great cook, and I'd love a bowl right now. A lot of times, the home remedies are the best. I didn't know about the healing properties of chicken soup, as mentioned by your first respondent. I am aware of the benefits of garlic though. Take care.

Welcome back! I have no idea if chicken soup really helps or if we have just been made to think that it does all these years. I think that the tea with lemon and honey probably did help some though.

While visiting a local health food store, and reading package labels, I noticed that Zinc is marketed as an immunity building supplement. Some even tout that a tablet has as much zinc as a bowl of Chicken noodle soup. Now, I'm no math major but I can add 1+1 and get 2...Seems to me if zinc is in Chicken noodle soup, and zinc makes your body fight off snotzees, then Chicken noodle soup must be helpful.

Glad to see you are feeling better, and you are not the only one trying to get over something. I have a Bad Cold, and laryngitis here myself and have not been to work since last Friday. I am supposed to go back to work tomorrow. We shall see, and hope my voice can last since I answer calls from people wanting a Cab all day. Yes, something hot does help. Last night I drank hot water with lime in it and it felt good. I just feel so congested still and running a fever on and off still as well. I am like you I am sure and ready to be 100%. But I've been keeping you in thought and Prayer, and take care of yourself my friend.

Nice to see you again here, GP.. But don't work yourself too hard here, take it slowly and easy! As for medications, I think as long as it's hot and spicy then it would help. I believe that when curing sickness, soups such as robust onion soup could really offer a good relief. Take it easy GrandPa, rest for a while for a speedy recovery..

I believe the chicken soup is magic. My daughter, when she was little and was coming down with a cold-flu type illness would actually crave chicken soup. If I didn't have time to make the good homemade one I would run to the store for a couple of cans along with the fixings for my homemade to get it cooking for her. I've had other flavor soups when I've been sick, but nothing seems to satisfy like good homemade chicken soup.
