I'm just finishing packing for a weekend away and the looks on my cats faces when the saw the suitcase! If looks could kill they say eh! It was like they both said 'Oh no, you are not going away AGAIN mummy' They will be looked after by a neighbour and I very rarely go away but this year I have had lots of 2 or 3 days here and there as there have been various events to attend. They are hanging round my legs at the moment wanting a fuss bless.
Do your animals know or sense when you are going to be away and do they try to make you feel guilty for doing so?
Please share. Ellie :D

I swear, cats CAN read your mind. They know that you're going away, and they resent it something rotten! I mean, how come you're allowed to go away and do interesting things and they're not?!
Remember that what is worse that the guilt you feel NOW, will be the guilt you feel when you get back. They'll present you with their backs and give you the cold shoulder until they feel you have suffered enough.
Cats are great, aren't they?

My animals don't know when I'm going somewhere except for my dog Lucy when she hears the car keys. She gets excited and thinks we are going out.
I sneak out the front gate if I go to the post office or to visit my friend for a minute. If the goats see me they call out and cry and stand watching me at the fence. They call out to me till I come home. I'm told when I go anywhere in the car, they stand at the fence and cry for ages. So cutr....they love me.
Mind you, when I come home they swamp me and search for what I brought them. They are big kids!

Yes I agree our pets and animals are so like kids at times (pun on the goats too there sorry LOL, you did it too in your response,)I'm back now and last night they worked together at sulking and not coming into greet me like they usually would if I had ben to work or to the shops. They ok this morning though so I have been forgiven for my jaunt. Thanks for sharing. Ellie :D

Oh yes, even when I'm going out to work I've had one or more of my cats either try to go with me or engage in obstructive behaviour like lying down in front of the door so that I can't open it. One time a few weeks ago I was just going out to the shop and my Felix was doing this. I moved him from in front of the door and went out. Then, just after I got back I heard this crying at the front door, and sure enough it was him
He must has gone out the back way, (they have free access to the back garden) and gone through the neighbours gardens to get round to the front - presumably to look for me. This sort of thing is getting more infrequent now though as I think that they realise that I'll be coming back again and I'm not leaving them for good.

Hi Doll
I think they do know.
Your cats know because you have a good connection!
My son has a 6 month old
pup that comes to Gran's
while he's at work daily.
He is on 12 hour 5 day a week shifts
right now so Nuke can not stay home all day.
When it gets close to 7 pm Nuke
starts jumping up and running to the door at
every small sound...He knows it's time for Daddy to
get here and take him home...lol

I've got 2 cats and a dog and whenever they see the suitcases or overnight bag out they are not impressed, the dog sits on the sofa looking at us to say I don't want to go away and usually the cats are chucked out the house but on return they shout continuously at us even when I've fed them they still have a good old moan!! Yes they know what is going on!

Oh yes animals know when you are going away and they are not invited!! I have no pets anymore, but when I did they always used to know, even before I got the suitcases out. I would always feel so guilty how they would sit and look at me and even worse when we were actually going and I would see their faces as I left.

yes i really think that they do, know when we are about to leave they can sense it. Animals sense a lot of things that we do not give them credit for.

It is the looks they are giving me, they are acting so funny so they really do know. I only have to cat the cat box out too and they know they are off to the vets and bolt, I shut the window now so they can't but Sybil hides indoors as it is open plan I can't shut a doo to keep her in one room. I found her once in the drawer under my sons bed, she had slid it open and hidden. LOL. Ellie :D

Yes. It happened for us also. When we were going out of station which was very necessary, my cat was restless. She was smelling the suitcases, running in between the suitcases and bags, making uneasy noises, did not eat properly and was not leaving my husband. Of course my daughter took care of her. Then everyday we used to talk to her on phone, with speaker on. When we came back, she was thrilled and ate well. But was restless till the suitcases were settled. Next time, when I was going out, again the same thing she did after seeing the suitcase. But she was ok later as my husband was there to look after her. I think they know something unusual is going on.

They definately do seem to sense it don't they eh! The minute mine see the suitcase that is it I'm a bad person because I am going to leave them. That made me laugh that you had to seak to yours on the speaker phone though. My cats would probably leap on the phone!
. I got the cold shoulder when I first came home but I have been forgiven now and they are back to normal, until the next time. Thanks for sharing. Ellie :D

Mine our always looked after whilst I am away but its the looks they give me to try to make me feel guilty for going. Last night when I got back they punished me by not coming home even though I had seen them and they knew I was back, they are ok this morning so I have noe been forgiven for leaving them. Hi Ellie-yes my two dogs know everytime-its lovely to know how much they love you but it also makes it equally hard for me to leave them when seeing their puppy dog eyes of 'why are going mummy please stay'-also if I've only gone down the road and got back they greet me as if I have left them for 3mnths! So in answer to your question YES they do make me feel guilty if I go anywhere!!

Hi Littleowl, I'm back and usually if I've just popped to the shops or been to work they'll come in and say welcome home with their eyes and mannerisms oh but not today, I've seen them both and they are in it together, sulking. Neither of them have come in, its like I'm being punished for having left them! I really miss not having dogs anymore but as I work it is not fair to get another just yet but my two labs used to greet me just like you described yours do. I was a lot fitter too because of all the walking with them, LOL. Ellie :D

Hi Ellie-came in from working at the pub today and my dogs had got hold of my glasses-which were on a big dining table-and broke them for me, the lense was out and partly broken plus the frames are all twisted! That was my punishment for leaving them alone for about 3hrs-but they were so happy to see me and jumped up all over me licking my face when I came in I couldn't be cross with them-luckily I have a spare pair of glasses-it was the only day for a long while they were left alone as normally friend or my daughter look after them but they couldn't today-but also I only work for 3days a week otherwise I'm with them 24-7

ellie_ My cat days are over, but yes they know how to lay on the guilt. One of my cats used to plop right on top of my suitcase, as if to say 'where you go, I go'.
I like having two or more cats because if I come home to one cat, I feel guilty for leaving him alone all day.

My cat used to go with me to my parents house and my grandmas he HATED travelling but i couldnt justify leaving him home alone for 3 or 4 days at a time or he'd go snakey and wreck things.
Everytime i packed my bag hed be hiding because he hated the kennel he had to ride in. One time i had to unpack my bags to get him to come out from under the fridge so i could put him in the kennel and into the car to leave.

Oh its lovely that you take your cat with you. I definately couldn't do that with mine and they have never wrecked anything whilst I am away but they are outdoors a lot of the time anyway. They come in for a fuss and a feed really. Mine do that if the see the cat cage because they know its time for the vets LOL and try to run away also. LOL. Thanks for sharing. Ellie :D

My cat is the same way. She could care less when we are here, but if she can tell we are leaving she goes crazy.
She unfortunately has a valid reason to do so though. She is a rescue cat, that I got from Siamese Cat Rescue and she was left in an abandoned house when her "family" moved out. I'm not sure how someone could do that to her, but none the less. She goes crazy anytime we try and leave. We have taken a ton of weekend trips, and she seems to be calming down, knowing that we will return.
We always leave plenty of food, and sometimes my best friend will come stay at our apt. so she is not alone. However, she still knows when we are getting ready to go somewhere.
We will be leaving tomorrow night to go about 2 hours away, so Im not going to even act like we are going anywhere until about an hour before where I will rush around and pack everything.
When we come back, however, she is so excited she can hardly stand it. It's the cutest thing.

Ah bless, no wonder she doesn't like it when you go away if she was abandoned like that. Every time you do it must trigger her ill treatment in her memory. As you say she is getting used to it and knows you will be back but there is still an element of doubt there within her. They do just seem to know though don't they. Mine are like my shadow this morning folowing me everywhere. I wil get out in a while though. Thanks for sharing. Have a lovely weekend. Ellie :D

pets can really be very sentimental, we have 2 pets in the company where I'm working, a shitzu puppy and a Pomeranian, they are both sweet and emotional especially the shitzu, he knows if her mom (my lady boss) is going out of the office and he will not leave her side. my lady boss will then have to snoop and run to be able to scape from him, as soon as the dog notice that she was missing he will stay in the door and wait for her crying silently until she comes back.

My cat has passed away but it has only been two years now. She definitely let me know that she was displeased when she saw the suitcases come out. She knew what that meant. We were going out of town for the weekend. It was comical to watch her. I would spread the suitcase out while I was packing and everytime I came back to put something else in the suitcase she would be laying right in the middle where I couldn't get anything in. I would have to move her off the suitcase each and everytime. Then when I would finally get the suitcase packed and closed she would sit in front of the bedroom door right in the middle of it and turn her back to me. Every once in a while she would look over her shoulder as if to say she was upset with me. I would have to reach over her to get through the bedroom door. Than she would position herself right in front of the front door and lay down and stare at me. I always had to lift her up and move her. And of course when we would get back from the trip we would get the I am ticked off at you treatment for a couple of hours and then she would come and make up with us.

Firstly I would like to say I am sorry for your loss. They become like family don't they and thanking for sharing your story. I've just got back and my two are punishing me by not even coming in, I've seen them both outside so they know I'm back so they are even working together on it! LOL. A double sulk.
Perhaps your thought by getting in the case you would take her with you!

I hope that you are really enjoying your weekend away. Yes, my pets know when they see my large backpack that I am going off traveling. My dog Secret looks sad when this happens, his body language and his eyes tell me this. He follows me around and looks upset when I go out. Magic my other dog is not quite as upset as Secret. She knows something is upsetting Secret but perhaps she is not sure what it is. Secret looks for lots of extra fuss like your cats. I feel guilty when I take my large backpack out and set off on my trip.

Hi, Thanks for sharing. They just know don't they. I've just arrived back and I had a lovely time thank you. I'm working tomorrow so I had my extra day by going friday instead. Even though you feel guilty its lovely to get away isn't it. Mine usually greet me when I get back from work or the shops but they know I'm back and are still out, they are working together to make me feel bad for having gone! Wait til they need a lap to snuggle on later. LOL. Ellie :D

It is funny how animals can sense when you are going to leave. I think it makes them sad. My kittens are only 4 months old and I have not left them for more than just few hours at a time yet but one of these days I am sure we will take a vacation (if the gas prices ever go back down) and then they will wonder what is going on.

Mine are fine until they see the case and then its give me a bad time, time and now I'm back instead of the greeting I would get coming back from shops or work I'm getting the cold shoulder. They know I'm back and are still out ignoring me, wait til they want a lap to snuggle on later! LOL. Ellie :D
