Have You Ever Moved Just Down the Street?

I am moving on Friday. The house is two houses down from where I live now. It would be absolutely ridiculous to rent a truck, as the distance can be walked in about 15 seconds. My question is this: If you have ever moved a very short distance, how did you go about it? Did you carry everything, use a dolly, stick things in the back of your car and coast the few yards? My neighbors think it's bizarre that we don't have all of our things in boxes, but what's the point? We are thinking we'll stick things in plastic tubs and use dollies to ferry them back and forth. Any thoughts or suggestions?

I recently moved down the street, friends and my son and daughter packed up my car and a friends mini-van with the boxes. The furniture was hand carried down the street, it worked out well. The two cats were also put in boxes and hand carried down the street.

Place only breakable items in a box, wrapped up in the box. I mean only 2 houses down is nothing, you can probably carry more than you think. Just do it the way you feel comfortable. Others may think it's odd but you're the one who is moving. The furniture, that part you may want to use a truck or just carry it you and whoever will help you, to our new home. Good luck with the move.

Thank you. My husband will use a dolly to move the washer, sofa, etc. So he can just push it over there. It will take a little time but I don't think we'll have a problem.

You sound like you have a great handle on it and all the plans. I can remember when I was a kid, my grandmother moved into the house next door. Of course, she was elderly at that time and the kids did all the work. It was just a little strange and I still miss the front porch from the old house. Good luck on your move!

I understand about missing an old residence. I still miss our house in Arizona sometimes. But right now we are renting a skinny little townhouse and I can't wait to move! I don't think there's anything I'll miss about this place. Thanks for the well-wishes.

I have moved twice in the last 4 years. The first time because our hospital is expanding and they tore down our building. We luckily found a place two blocks away. Alot of the stuff we walked over in wagons and plastic bags (boy did that get our neighbors attention!)They thought we were homeless people! On this property, there is a big house with three units, and a smaller house with 3 units. The first one we were in, was too small. So When the biggest one became vacant a year later, we moved again. Twenty feet away! So out with the wagons, bags and baskets again! I still had stuff I didn't upack from the other move. I swear, the stuff hides in the closets and makes more stuff. I don't want to mave again for a while now. #:)

Yes, and I even have some "mystery boxes" that have followed me through at least 4 moves. Im sure I'll get around to looking in them some day.............#:)

LOL It does seem like the stuff reproduces somehow. I was telling my husband that we had better not do it at night or the neighbors would think we were ripping someone off. (Our neighborhood isn't that great)

Hello shizuoka!:-) I don't think it would be very efficient to pack all the stuff to just move down a few yards. I think you are doing it just the fine way. It would take a great amount of time if you were to pack and then unpack everything. Fragile materials can be packed as other have suggested too, and other things can just be carried as you have planned. Ever since I came to France, I have been changing accommodations, this is my fifth. But, I am settled now in the present one for over two years now. I don't have a whole house load of things to move. So, whenever I have to move, I stuff my luggage bags and big plastic bags and my friends and I shift things in Trams/Buses by going to and fro. I guess, if I had house load of things, I would have to hire a truck, since no new accommodation was so close as yours!

Oh, I love it light, shiuoka, I think it will be a lot of work when I get back to my homeland since I'll have to make a full house there in a different city that I have lived before. What helps me here is that I have been to furnished apartments/ university housing. Otherwise it would have been a lot of hassle here too. I think your way is the best in this situation. And, it will definitely be easily to arrange things easily since you will have the possibility of unpacking right when you reach in the new house and you'll be knowing what has been put where, which is difficult if you pack up everything!:-)

Those were the days! I remember when I used to be able to stuff my futon and clothes in my car and move. Well, it was a little more than that, but compared to what we have to contend with now, I was traveling light. I agree that it would be ridiculously time consuming to pack and unpack everything. I'm just going to put things in plastic storage tubs in order to carry them more efficiently, then take them out at the other end. In this way, everything should be more or less in its designated place when we get finished. (Wishful thinking?)

Last year i move a littel down on the same streat, and it is not necessary to put your staff in box,you can cary them in plastic bags,or in clean sail, only if you have fragile staff you can put them on a box.

Thanks Ediona, I hadn't thought of bags but that's a very good suggestion.

The only time I moved within the same street was when I was a Student and moved from One Shared house to another a few doors down..being a Student I didn't have that much to Move..TV,Books,clothes,sound system,CD's,VCR,tapes..surprising how many trips it took!

Well, we did it. It took a couple of days and you are right about the Advil - my feet were killing me! I didn't have a phone or internet access for a week (horror!). I love the new house though and it was all worth it.

We moved one apartment building over once and just used a dolly, as the distance to parking was longer than the move. I actually set the TV on the seat of an office-type chair with casters and wheeled it along the sidewalk. That was a long time ago, when TV's were very heavy, but the screens were not as big. The most bizarre short move we ever saw, though, was when a neighbor stuffed everything in huge plastic trash bags and threw it off the 2nd floor balcony to a grassy area below and then dragged the bags to the next building. I guess they didn't have anything breakable.

Hey, I like that chair idea. I don't think the TV would fit on it, but I bet something would. The bizarre move sounds like me in college. :) It was pretty clever if you think about it - much easier than running up and down the stairs with the stuff.

My friend moved 1 block over. It was kind of funny. We loaded as much as we could into the back of my husbands pick up then drove up the block and unloaded. My only advice would be recruit help! Even though it seems like a short ditance it is still a lot of walking and carrying. Good luck and congrat's on your new place!

I have never moved just down the street. I have moved one street over though. It was about a mile or so away...think long dirt roads. I was in the 10th grade at the time. My parents didn't rent a truck or anything either. They just hauled everything over in their personal vehicles. My mom has a touch of OCD though, so she had everything organized and most things were boxed. It sounds like a good plan that you have for moving. It would be a complete waste to use a vehicle when you are only moving 15 seconds away!

I moved across the hall and an apartment over once. I carried everything across the hall. Reused the boxes but i also had a week to move everything across. It makes sense just to haul it across like that rather than packing it into a trailer driving it 2 driveways and unpacking it

Yeah, it would be like that movies LA Story where Steve Martin gets in his car and drives two houses down to see his friend. I think it would take more time just to put it on the truck and take it off than it would to carry it.

I can say you are lucky for finding a house that is only 2 houses from where you are now. You don't see that kind of move to often. I think your right and just put your things into plastic tubs and carry them over. A dolly would be great for the bigger things. I hope the move goes great for you and good luck. Enjoy your new house.

How did he go about that? Did he carry his things across the street?
