Just yesterday 100's of ants decided they were going to move in through the front door and what isn't helping is my son bless left a sweetie out for them to eat last night! There are none at the back of the house near the kitchen area but coming into hall and then lounge.
What is the best way to get rid of them?

Hi ellie,
In our case, we always trap them by pouring vinegar in their way and it always work! they are really annoying plus they go with a group! what a team mate! lOL

Cream of wheat will work. They will eat it and it will cause their stomach to burst. Kind of like a bird eating rice at a wedding. If you sprinkle it around the nest it will take care of them.
Good Luck

Hopefully the vinegar and pepper will work. I would think that it would only make them move. But that is just a guess.

Try to use vinegar. You can mix vinegar with water or just plain vinegar. Ants are coming for food, so try to keep everything in fridge.

Vinegar would work fine on ants. What I would do is that I go to a store to get a special spray that will certainly neutralize ants. So keep all food in cupboards and in fridge. So keep your house all sanitized and disinfected. Ants do come in contact with garbage. So spray around the garbage.

We have lots of ants in California! Back east, we did not have so many trying to get in the house but here, when it rains, you will know it by the ants coming in the house! Anything that takes away their "path" helps control them, as they leave a scent trail for the other ants to follow!

Hi Candee, Last night before I went to bed I sprayed vinegar and water and put pepper down as some had suggested and this morning rather than hundres there are just a few, but I am sure the sweet my son put down for them didn't help either. LOL. Ellie :D

Hi ellie333, Not too long ago I was reading a magazine and i saw where is said if you're having problems with ants, you can use some "Grits". Once the grits are down the ants carry the grits back to there nesting place to feed. Once they eat the morsel of grit the have water and the grit will expand killing the ants. So I say if you have any grits go outside and look for the ant holes. Put some grits down and around that ant hole. Do the same for in your house. This should work, Without the chemicals since you have children and a cat. Good luck

Thanks Remmie7, I appreciate you sharing this especially as it is a safe thing to use around the cats and children because it would worry me I think using a pesticide of some sort just in case. Before I went to bed last night I tried a mix of another suggestion and that was to spray vinegar water and pepper which I did all along the doorway and this morning instead of hundreds there does appear to be only a few. Unless they are lulling me into a false sense of security eh! LOL. I will consider the grit though outside if I find where they are coming from. Ellie :D

Hi Winterose & Oreo, I never realised you could get an traps, but then I have never had a problem with ants before. I sprayed a mix of vinegar water and pepper last night before I went to bed and that seems to have worked quite well as there are literally just a few now where there were hundreds last night. If they reappear I will have to buy a specialist product. Ellie :D

hhhmmm...well, there r ant killer things that u can buy, i think some of them are made by raid, but basically, its poisoned food in a container that ants can access...so they eat the food, and the take food back to their colony.
thats wat i used for an ant infection, and now they're all gone XD

Hi Thanks for sharing. I would rather not buy a pesticide. I used a mix of vinegar water and pepper last night before I went to bed and sprayed all along the door and this morning instead of being hundreds of them there just seems to be a few so looks like that has worked. Ellie :D

Hi Littleowl, I think it fantastic the way the all march along, my son has seen the film Antz so he was being kind bless as all should to all creatures, I just don't want them in the house. Well suggestions so far have been an orange spray, vinegar water, pepper or the pesticide specialists killers that you can get. Before I went to bed last night I sprayed vinegar water and pepper around the door and instead of there being hundreds of them there are only a few this morning so it appears to have worked. As you know I much prefer to use natural products if I can. I'm sure they would love a bowl of sugar left outside for them eh! Ellie :D

Well, what I would do, if I were you, is that I would get myself an ant spray. That will certainly kill all the ants. At first ants will certainly come in contact with the spray. And the ants will be killed on contact. The best spray to get, as you look at the readings on it, will neutralize ants.

Depends Ellie..do you want to do it organic or regular way?
if organic you can use any orange spray that you can get in any hardware store..sometimes i use soapy water and that sems to do the job.Now if regular way..then make sure you do the yard also with the ant killer and then spray all around the house inside and out with the windows closed and then leave for awhile..come back open the windows and air the rooms out..it helps to keep the house closed for a bit to make it sronger..

Hi Rosekitty I would rather use something that is not harmful for the environment. I had a few suggestions before I went to bed and spreyed vinegar water and pepper at the doorway and instead of hundreds of the things there are just a few this morning so maybe that worked. I like the sound of the orabge spray though, would smell nice too I expect. Thanks for sharing. Ellie :D

Talc, that is an intersting one. I tried a mix of vinegar water and pepper last night before going to bed and that seems to have worked well there are just a few rather than hundreds. Thanks for sharing this one as I love to use things that I already have at home rather than going and buying specialist product too. Ellie :D

I totally understand where you are coming from, and they come out of no where and if you see one you see a hundred.
I use a product called "TERRO Ant killer". And it is hard to find also. I think last year after I went all over town looking for it and finally found it at Wal-Mart. So call around and ask otherwise you'll be searching for it all over town. It is wonderful. A few drops of this stuff and in an hour or so you will see it filled with the ants eating it up.
It is poison so you want to make sure that it is in a place where no one will touch it and not around food. I place a few drops on a piece of cardboard and stick it in the corner nearby where I see ants. And like I said they smell it (it most have something sweet in it to attract them) and they hord on it. They take it back to their nest and it eventually kills them off. You may have to do this every few weeks until they are gone. I just keep a little bit out and when I notice they are not eating it up I throw it away until they appear again.
And one bottle will last you awhile. So far, I am half way through the bottle I bought last year, but I live in the country.

Hi Thanks for this information. I would rather not use poison as I have cats and a young son just in case they get near it but will if really can't get rid. I used vinegar water and pepper before going to bed and in the morning instead of hundreds of them there were just a few so this seems to have worked. If they return I think I will look out for this product you mention. Your advice is appreciated. Ellie :D

They are a flippin nuisance arn't they? I know in my old house I was taking the kids to school one morning and I opened the front door to take them and there were thousands, and I mean thousands of flying ants and ants all around the front door, it was just swarming with them.
Of course with opening the door I disturbed them and I was just swallowed in a cloud of flying ants taking off all around me. They were in the house, in my hair it was like something off a horror film, but I had the starring role. Anyway we invested in some ant powder and that did the trick within days, there was not a sign of an ant anywhere, I later found out that they had packed up and moved into my next door neighbours instead ha ha!!

Hi I am going to try vinegar and water first before getting powder as I have that in the cupboard already. You certainly made me visualise the moment you opened the door though as something out of a horror film especially the flying ones. Thanks for sharing. Ellie :D

Go and visit the hardware store and ask for there advice. There is a poweder called Nippon which you can put down, it is very good as we have used it when we have had ants. If you know where the nest is you can pour boiling hot water down it and that will kill the ants.
Hope this helps you.
