Why aren't there more pets on TV shows?

I was watching my soap when one of the charactors' dog got very sick. She has a little chihuahua but they are playing to her Diva side, not her pet lover side or lots of normal people have pets theory. It got me to wondering. WHY don't more families on TV have pets? I watch Medium, a nice suburban family 3 kids, no dog. of all the soaps I have watched I have never (to my knowledge) seen a pet on any of them. I think house did keep a friends dog for a while, but it was just a show or two. I would love to see my families as well as single people on TV have pets on their shows. Friends had pets even if they were a duck and a chicken at least they were 'pets' Can you think of any shows currently on where they have pets? (The Simpsons don't count, it is a cartoon!!)

Probably because animals can be difficult to control, and don't always look comfortable on camera. I see it all the time on the telly, scenes where two or more of the characters are having a conversation while one of them strokes his pet cat/dog/owl/whatever, and the animal in question is staring at something offscreen in the opposite direction from the cast - probably its trainer, or a member of the camera crew.

This is probably a good reason. I had not thought about that. I know when they have little kids on Soaps, they are the same way and are not seen very often. I remember on 7th Heaven Happy was always a very good 'actor'. She interacted with the cast and didn't seem to be distracted. I guess they can't all be great actors can they?

Now if you want a really bad case of animals misbehaving - when I was a kid in the early 70s, I watched a programme called "Ace of Wands". I got the DVD set for Christmas and it comes with a documentary that includes interviews with the cast. The star of the show remembered a particular incident with a python. The hero had a pet owl, which was well-behaved most of the time, but didn't like snakes. One particular episode featured a python. The owl saw the python, got scared and took off, ending up perching in the gantries in the studio ceiling, where the lights were. They had to take the python out of the studio so they could coax the owl down again. An even worse thing happened later on - they were filming the python on set (no owl in this scene, apparently) and the star noticed that the python was looking a bit "fat". He asked the trainer why this was, and he said that pythons only defecate about every three weeks - and then the python chose that moment to "let go" - they had to get shovels and wheelbarrows to clean the set out!

OMG!!! i have seen a young small python that was about 3 feet long, um... " let it go" and it was NOT a pretty site! I can only imagine what a big one can do! That is so funny!

They don't have more pets on tv, because well trained pets are so obviously smarter than the people and steal the scenes! LOL Actors egos can't take that. Pets could rule the world if they could learn to talk! ROFL

They can steal the scene at times can't they! Didn't you see that movie; what was it called? Cats & Dogs maybe?

Vaguely. It was the Disney movies I loved the best though. They always had an animal in them that stole the scenes. And their animated movies where all the animals in the world talked - so fun! I miss the old kind of Disney movie. Guess the kid in me never grew up! LOL

Oh I love the Disney movies too. Why aren't they as good as they use to be? They use to ALL be good family movies, but now you can't be sure it is suitable for children even with ratings!

I agree with the above post. Animals are unpredictable and a lot of the equipment and noise on a set can really be frightening or distracting for a lot of animals. It really takes a special animal to be able to act in a show. I think you're right about TV shows that are currently running not having any pets on it other than that one on WB about the family in South Africa. (I can't remember the title, but I think it's like Something Wild or like that). But, you're right, there's not a lot of people keeping pets on any of the shows that I am watching right now.

I said above I remember the show 7th Heaven, their dog Happy was a great 'actor' She interacted very well with the cast members and wasn't distracted like some animals seem to be. I've not seen the show you are talking about. unless it is the one on Saturday morning. The mom was an actress and the daughter a Diva. Then they moved to I think it is South Africa.

I'm thinking of soaps, drama series and sitcoms and you're correct...no pets. That's weird. I used to love Eddy from Frasier....lol. You know what else? There are no TVs. People on those shows, rarely if ever watch TV or even have one on the set.

Even when they are watching TV, you rarely hear it, or see the screen. I doubt they are even turned on. Maybe they listen to 'Design on a Dime" and they all Have them hidden away in cabinets and other concealing tricks.

That is a GOOD question tammy! I would love to see more animals on family shows too for it would promote more animal adoptions which means more homes for these poor souls. I wonder who you could mention that to in hopes to change that. I think it would be a great change to society's view on having pets in the home.

Well, this show has been over for a while but I still love Eddie from the Frasier series. That is the only one I can think of! How strange! I never thought about it, but not many shows have family pets! Not like real life anyway. We have a puppy, a cat and a bunch of fish. My friend usually has hamsters, snakes, birds etc. I suppose it is easier to film the show without the animals, but is is less realistic now that I think about it.

AHH, Eddie was a smart dog. I for got about Wishbone. It was on not too many years ago. Don't know if it still is or not. It would be nice to at least say they have pets and rarely see them like they do with the kids. They wouldn't have to be in every show. Hope things are going well for you, Good to 'see' you!

My guess is, it has partly to do with there not being a lot of family sitcoms these days. There's not much that a pet can do in a dramatic story. They wouldn't be part of the plot of any episode, so they'd end up just being ignored, and then people would wonder what happened to the pet. With a family sitcom (I mean one that shows a single family's life at home) you can have cute pet moments and pets getting sick moments, that wouldn't work on a drama or soap. And, workplace comedies couldn't have pets in them, because you don't see the people at home that much.

What about Medium, House of Pain, Two and a half Men, My Name is Earl, One Tree Hill, Smallville... i can think of more shows that COULD have a pet. Even, like ER that is set in a hospital, they show them at home from time to time. I think on soaps they could have pets and not show them much. They do it with the children, and no one thinks they are bad parents when you don't see the baby for weeks at a time. I'd just like to see a few more pets on shows, and it is something to think about.

I think because they are hared to train and dont always respond to cues. It probably takes longer ot work with a pet than with a human. Plus I think they have to be paid.
