Odd Ringing Sound?

I had been on dial up AOL for 18 years and just yesterday I hooked up with DSL. I kept my AOL address for this site as well as other sites. Now when I would be doing my myLotting and replying through my AOL emails I kept hearing this odd sound that never occured before. Well after it happening on and off for hours and me not knowing what it was I asked a TECH through AOL about it. DOHHHH! That ringing, clanging sound or whatever sound, it was a sound notifying me of a new email arriving in my AOL mail box. Well I sure feel like an idiot now. I have a lot to learn about having DSL and a different server and browser etc. So have you ever had problems figuring things out after a major change like this with a computer etc? HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Aw grandpa Bob don't feel bad. Sometimes we don't know about what's going on. Hehe, I can't believe your daughter called you "old"...grr, you're only as old (or young) as you feel. Yes, I felt like such an idiot at times. For example, I said Illonis with the "s"..I didn't know the "s" was silent. I got some real strange looks from people from Illnois, "that's not how you say it". Hm, yes we really need a faster connection at home, it's very annoying. Pablo

Not only did you pronounce it wrong, you spelled it wrong as well. It's I-L-L-I-N-O-I-S.

Congrats on switching to DSL - just make sure that you aren't paying for AOL now. If you have high-speed connection, you don't have to pay for AOL, but everything stays the same. Of course, I'd suggest getting rid of AO(hel)L altogether, but that's just my 2 cents worth.

I got rid of AOL immediately after installing DSL. I still use the email and it is actually better than when I had AOL as a user. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

LOL. I have never had DSL so I do not know what that sound would be either. I have lovely dialup because that is all that I can get in my srea right now. I had problems figuring things out when I first got my computer, period. I have been onoline for about 8 or 9 years now though. How do you like your new DSL?

After dialup for 18 years I am amazed at the spped I have now. I did about 60 discussions resolving them with best response in a few mionutes time where as before it would have taken me a couple hours to do. I upload larger photos in a lot less time then with dialup as well. I can say I LOVE MY DSL! HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

LOL That is funny. You will have some things to get used to now that your high speed. When I first got my dsl, I did have a few problems with it and it floored me with the first problem I had cause right after it happened, I got a phone call on my landline. I answered it and it was tech support from my ISP letting me know they were working on the problem. I was like , danggggggggggggggggg..how in the heck did they know that when I didn't even contact them? Come to find out, thanks to the lovely computers, they are alerted to any problem any of their customers have with their service and are on it right away. Now when I have a problem, I just grab the phone knowing I'll be getting a call to let me know what's going on. Sometimes it's my puter and they talk me thru on how to fix it. Never, ever had an ISP do that b4. Now I know I won't be changing in the future. lol

That is really funny, but the thing is technology is a little scary and so I can see why you may of had to ring them. I have to say though, I have never had a problem like that, sorry, one of my email accounts does it, I say one of, because I used to have one but now I have 3 email accounts. Can you imagine that 3, what on earth I am going to do with 3 email addresses, I have not got a clue, but they are handy for spares I guess. See ya laterxx

Normally, I can figure things out pretty quickly when it comes to my computer. And when I have a problem I can't figure out, I ask for help. Don't be so hard on yourself, though. It was a new sound and that is enough to make you want to know why.

LOL No need to feel like an idiot AGB - you just weren't used to it! Reminds me though of the joke about the blonde who kept appearing at her mail box and wondering why it was empty , when a neighbour asked why she was doing it she told him her computer kept telling her she had mail! lol Hugs xxxx

I used to get that myself...every time my Yahoo messenger signaled I had someone ready to "chat" or if I got a new email...ping..ping...ping..drove me batty so I just switched the darn thing off, it got to be real distracting to hear it especially if I were in the middle of scanning photos or writing an article..it's like gee, if I want to know if I got new emails, I just go to my email and look I did have to teach myself a lot of changes though...I had been using PCs at the library or internet place..when I finally got my own computer, a Mac, I had to teach myself all over again as Mac is a different breed of computer all together...STILL learning

yes i remember this craziest experience when i use msn email provider, if i received new email i am alarm by the sound. when i also used yahoo the sounds quiet different. now am aware of this sounds and appreciate it. i am using msn for mylot exclusive no other site enrolled on this email provider. when i encounter problem with notification i transfer to yahoo. they have both sounds that alarm you of your new emails. i try AOL soon.
