Making a wish upon a turkey wishbone

I am deboning the turkey my mom sent for me, because she helps us with food. I found the wishbone and dried it out, and then made a wish and broke it with my son. The person who gets the biggest part of the broken bone gets their wish come true. Now when I was a child my grandmother always did that with me, and I always believed it. I don't remember if my wishes came true or not but it is a tradition I always kept.
Do you wish on the wishbone?
Do you have any other turkey traditions?

I am glad that I am not the only one still doing this. It was something I did as a kid also and I still do it everytime we have a turkey. My husbands family didn't have this tradition and he sometimes thinks I am silly for doing it. I was always told to hang or put it above the door and let it dry out before breaking and that is how I still do it today. I don't think alot of my wishes came true while growing up because I most always would wish for alot of presents at christmas and it usually never happened that way now days I always make wishes for other people. To give them help and may they have it better even if I myself am facing dicculties. We didn't really have any other traditions for the turkey.

yes it was a neat tradition, I think this generation of people have forgotten all these nice little traditions and it is a shame.

Awww Sweets
You take me back...
When the kids were little
I would ask everyone in the neighborhood
to save their wishbones so there were
enough for all the kids to do together...
Lucky for us we had lots of older people
with grown kids near us

My mother had 8 kids at the time I wish she had thought of that for us. Most times it was just her and my step dad got to do it so it would be fair since they were only one. But as the older ones left and they were just 2-3 kids left she let us start making the wishes. Cool idea though to get everyones that wasn't going to be making any wishes on them to give them to the kids. I think it is a tradition worth passing on to the kids.

I always did the wishbone thing also with my family members. I don't know if any of my wishes ever came true either. I think i live on a wish and a prayer though. I bet over time, some of my wishes were granted and I didn't even realise it because it came later than expected or some other fashion or form. that is about the only turkey tradition I can remember in my family also.

my mother always did that with my brother and I. It was such a big deal to us. I have one dried out from our first turkey as a married couple that we have not pulled apart. I guess I am not so much into the superstitious, but it was a special day so it is my memento.

I have this weird tradition about turkey wishbones myself. I only get a turkey around Thanksgiving time here. So after the turkey is roasted I take the wishbone and save it for a full year until next thanksgiving, then that's when I make a wish, then when I have the new turkey, save that wishbone for the following Thanksgiving...don't ask why I started that tradition, just did

Yes, we did this as children too. I used to make a wish with my sister growing up.
This discussion reminded me that I have a dried out wishbone sitting on the top of my microwave still.
A wish waiting to come true...

I used to do that all the time with my parents when I was younger. I have only done it once with my children as they are still a little young. My children thought it was pretty cool, even though I dont think they quite understand the whole "make a wish" thing yet.

Oh, very interesting, and this is my first time to hear about wishbone like this can be wished. And I should say that in my hometown there is no any tradtions like yours, maybe someday I can have a try, make a wish, then break it, and catch the biggest piece, and waiting for the wish come true, hehe....
Anyway,thanks for your share.

Funny you bring this up. The wife and I just broke one a few weeks ago. It was sitting on the kitchen window sill since Thanksgiving 2006. We forgot all about it till I washed the ledge and found it. I never recall the wishes yet alone if they came true. Old age does that to me.
HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

We always made wishes also on turkey and chicken wish bones. I never could remember though if it was the short end or the long end that got their wish. I boiled a chicken today to make chicken and dumplings for my son's birthday dinner and I forgot all about saving the wishbone. I don't remember either if my wishes ever did come true. I hope all of your wishes come true winterose.

Oh, we always did that! There were five of us kids so there was always a fight, but since I was the baby, I usually got to take my turn.
I remember Mom used to hang it somewhere to dry real good and we'd ask her every day if it was 'ready' yet.
I've done it with my own kids and now with my husband. Thanks for a sweet memory.

I have always wished on the wishbone, when I could get a hold of it.. There were so many of us growing up and only 2 wishbones a year, that I didn't get to do it that often.. I have always wished on the wishbone with my husband after I grew up and got married and with my son later.. It is a tradition and although we don't normally have turkey unless it is Thanksgiving or Christmas, we do utilize the wishbone.. Have a wonderful evening..
