He Escapes

Okay this afternoon the wife and I did some planting of new veggies out back and along side the house. Buster was in the yard relaxing in the sun on the grass. As we were behind the garage we heard the gate go "click click slam" I ran to the gate only to se it still moving slightly from the winds blowing it shut and no Buster around. This is the second time in a week he has escaped. I know the gate was shut securely as I had just tested it a few minutes prior. Now we know that Buster has learned to jump up and hit the handle lever opening the gate. Then he seems to push it open and run off gallavanting around the neighborhood to visit all the other dogs aropund. I found him about an hour later at one of his usual hangouts with a frienddsly cockapoo. He also knows how to climb a chain link fence. Does your dog escape often? Does he/she know how to open a gate like Buster does?

Animals are smart little buggers lol. Our old dog ashley used to put her feet in the fense and just climb the fence. We think she saw the kids do it and learned how herself.

If I remember correctly Buster is a beagle? My Dad bred beagles, but he stopped before we moved when I was 5, but I do remember we kept one female for a pet for when we got to the new house..This house had a chain link fence and our dog couldn't climb it, but she did dig under the gate many times to escape..Beagles are very good at running away and my Dad was not too happy, so he installed a electric wire to prevent her from digging..It worked, unfortunately there were times I forgot and got a slight shock...

Yup he is a beagle. Buster has dug a lot as well. He gets yelled at when he digs up my garden though. Big time yelling.
he is learning slowly but surely at least. beagles are excellent hunters and diggers.

Yeah, a beagle or beagle mix is about what I really wanted, but Zoe came into our lives instead..
(The happy/sad face means I love Zoe, but still want a smaller dog..
)
I don't think my Dad hunted, but he bred them, so I guess he bred them to sell and I really miss having a dog the "right" size..And the dog would be a on dog run, couldn't touch my flower/veggie beds..

Hey now! That's sexist.
But he seems to have a few girlfriends in the neighborhood. And the neighbors know him all to well from all his little trips throughout the neighborhood.

Once he was back in the yard he kept glaring at me
like he was waiting for the yelling to begin. I just
kept looking at him saying, Opened my gate huh Buster?
He is cute and I can't stay mad long.

Beagles are notorious escape artists! If I ever have one again (and I may, Tom loves beagles), I will name him Houdini.
My German Shepherd, Rose, was good too. She could climb any fence made, and even destroyed a friend's chain link kennel when I left her there for an hour while we went into town.
When I was there in MN, we put her in a horse stall - she climbed out. We put chicken wire type stuff over the top, she pulled it away from the corner and got out. I finally had to nail some 2x4s over the wire to keep it taught. She still tried to pull it loose, but never quite made it.
I put her in the garage one day when I found her loose and I was on my way to work so couldn't do anything else. I was working on the schoolbus so I was home less than two hours later and she was sitting in the driveway waiting for me. She had busted through the garage door!

Wow, at least you found him soon! My Fiance and I have two chihuahua's and they both like to go off onto the road sometimes. We live on a dirt road, so there's no problem there.... The neighbors all know us, so if they do get farther then their supposed to we'd get them back, because one set of neighbors seems to stay outside.
Maybe it's time to invest on a lock for the gate?

The gate does have a lock on the latch. You can
bet it stays locked all the time from now on when
he is outside. That's who found him was one of my
neighbors a few blocks away.

Well that's good that you have nice neighbors, and I'm glad that you did find him. Would hate if you hadn't, or if he was malicious... Although from what i've read about him he doesn't seem to be the type.
Yes, I would definitely keep that gate locked from now on. What made him start to want to run ? This is sudden?

The whole neighborhood knows Buster. Mostly from his little trips. He has done this a lot. Before he would litterally climb the fence like a kid. Now he uses the gate like a human. He is so loved by all the neighbors and he is a good "watch" dog. He watches then howls as strangers go by but if they were to come in the house he wants their undivided attention.

No, luckily, my dogs haven't learned any tricks like that. Might be time to fix the gate so he can't get out. I'm glad you found him though!

LOL. Buster is a very smart dog. I only have a Pomeranian and he cannot get out of our gate. He cannot reach the handle either. He has escaped a few times from us though when we have the garage door open and also the outside garage door open. He will go through the back and out the front and run off.

Since I have owned Buster I have taught him many tricks. But I never taught him how to open that gate dang it! Buster has also escaped the same way through the doors
both opened when we forgot we had them opened.

When we had three little dogs, they spent the nights in their biggish dog crates instead of with us. They all went in quite happily every night to their fleece blankets, especially since they had a treat waiting for them. About five minutes later Susie Q would come trotting out. The crates have this latch on the outside. She would just put her paw out of the crate and flip that latch right back up. We've never had a dog since as smart as she was. Our back yard was fenced in except for around our elevated deck. It was a good eight foot drop at least. She would just take off running and look like she was flying off the deck - always landed well and off she went until she was ready to come back.
Sounds like Buster is getting creative as well.

Buster also opens and closes his kennel latch. It is funny to watch him grab the door with his paw pulling it open. he has yet learned to open it once it is latched though. In time he may. But he only gets locked in the kennel when he gets on the back of the couch too often. So he is free to come and go from his kennel mostly as he wishes.

Hi GRANDPA BOB! Our dogs could not escape even if they would love to go strolling on their own. We have two gates and both are locked all the time and the keys are not within their reach. Besides they still have to learn how to open the gate using the keys. haha..
Take Care and God Bless! Happy Mylotting!

he is inside and locked in his kennel. No more of me driving around calling and whistling for him.

Its been a while since we were where we could have a dog
but when we did my dog learned to climb over our wooden
fence . so we had to do some remodeling really quick and
put in a chain link fence. poor Swap she could no longer
just jump against the wood then climb up and be off.
she never did learn to unlatch the front gate for which I
was so grateful. Years back we had a dachound that was about
five inchs taller than the normal doxie and she had no problem]
getting gates open. It ended up with our pure bred doxie
having doxieriener pups from a neighbor's weimereiner dog.
'they sure were the strangest looking pups too. lol

Mine doesn't deem it worth her time to even go outside.. She loves to be inside and goes out only to do her business, which she wouldn't do if we had a doggy Porta-potty installed int he house.. I don't have to worry about her escaping since her highness doesn't get off of the couch long enought to do anything at all..

Well it sounds like you have your hands full w/ your dog and twice in one week lol.
I must say he is a smart pup for he know just what to do to keep you on your toes. I think if you get a dog lead runner for the yard along w/ the fence you shouldn't have to worry about him escapeing anymore. There not that hard to set up and it will save you in the long run from haveing to chase him. I don't own a dog only a cat but have heard this kind of thing happening to my friends that have dogs. Only one of them took my advice and was glad he did for now the dog can run around the full length of the back yard and him not worry if the dog got out and him have to chase him.

No matter how often he escapes/flees, he is still deeply loved and missed during his shirt galavants around the neighborhood. I hate those things. I do have a 15 foot chain staked in the ground by his dog house though the he uses ever so often if he has been reall bad.

I know I am late here lol
Gissi will escape if he gets the chance when he sees a Dog and it is scary as I live on the Main Road through the Village
He is ok when there is no Dogs passing but if he sees a Dog he is gone
He did escape once just after I got him, after 2 hours of looking I was upset as I thought I would never see him again he didn't know the Area or anything
He was returned 3 hours later by a Friend of my Daughters who had found him wandering about
I was so happy to have him back

How incredibly cute! Buster knows how to break lose! :) I bet he hightails it around the neighborhood-- laughing (you know dogs laugh right)... They don't know I'm gone yet ....
Carmen has only gotten out twice in 4 years-- we have invisible fencing- so her collar goes off when she gets close. She has busted through it twice- once when we didn't realize the line was cut (backhoe) so no beep no shock! lol... and once when we went 4-wheeling and she just had to find us ... lol....

We have an invisible fence. He doesn't escape from the yard, but he has slipped out of his leash at times and goes running up and down the street. I have to pretend I'm driving away and he will run after the car ;when he is tired he hops in. I'm in a rural area so it's not too dangerous.

When my Ray was a puppy she would dart out each time the door would open . She was also as fast as a speeding bullet. She would zig zag in and out of everyones front yard, but she word come back .
