Do you know how much salt is in a frozen TV dinner?

Last night I was about to warm up a frozen TV dinner and happened to glance at the nutrition panel on the back. Did you know that there is tons of salt in those dinners? I had no idea. It said that there was 65% of the daily value for salt in one dinner. Maybe that's why I feel so sluggish after eating a TV dinner. I try not to have TV dinners too often, but sometimes time restraints demand that I err on the side of convenience over health. How do you monitor your salt intake when you are on a diet? Are there some foods that you avoid when on a diet that contain lots of salts? Please share your salt saving tips for someone on a diet.

Not only in frozen dinners either. You should check out the label on a can of plain canned veggies. LOADED with sodium. And, have you taken a look at the ingredients list? There are so many chemicals in there that you can't even pronounce! I heard that the healthy intake of sodium is 2400 mgs or less per day. That is the equivalent of about 1 tsp of table salt. Most people are WAY above that. I started cooking my own dinners from fresh veggies and since I have limited time during the week (I am a single parent AND run my own business), what I do is I cook up a bunch of food on the weekend and then re-package into single servings. Then I pop them in the fridge or freezer. That way, I have the convenience, but not the bad stuff.

That's such a good idea. I'll bet it wouldn't take me any more time to do something like that than to cook five TV dinners (at eight minutes each, that's 40 minutes). In 40 minutes, I could totally make up a couple pots of healthier food. Thanks for the suggestion.

Oh yeah. That is why I only buy certain brands. The "healthy" dinners are often the worst offender! I remember reading somewhere that if you are going to eat something process, it should have less than 400mg of sodium per serving. If you think those are bad, check out the box Mac & Cheese. The kinds that comes with the "liquid" cheese can have over 1,200 mg of Sodium per serving (that serving is probably 1/4 of what you normally eat).

I have checked out some of those frozen microwave dinners like lean cuisine weight watchers and healthy choice and if you look at the label some of them have over 600mg of salt! That is why I stay away from those.
