Last night I made a six hour round trip to have supper with my sister in law who is over from her home in Singapore. The traffic was awful, but the dinner good, but not exceptional in an Italian restaurant close to where she has her UK home. Now, this is not something that I routinely do, travel hours just for a meal, but I have been known to do it before. What's the furthest that you have traveled for a night out - and returned the same night.

That was some journey but as long as you had a good night then I guess it was worth it! I think the furthest I have traveleed for a night out and returned the same night was about an hour and a halfs drive away - too much further would be too much for me! I know that you enjoyed getting all dressed up though - still looking for the photo to over! xxx

I'm not sure how long it would take from where you are but I know it would be wonderful! A girl can dream can't she! As for the photo I really would love to see it - and apart from the fact that I don't sleep long enough to get nightmares , you are so wonderful that nothing remotely connected to you could be other than a dream! xxx

We had a lovely time Mummymo. The food was good, the company better. Now, how long would it take me to get to Scotland. There isn't a restaurant there that could better the company that iI might find there!! I no longer own the photo and it is very rude. I'd hate to make you blush. But I could probably get it e mailed if you really wanted to see it. More nightmares than sweet dreams I think. LOL. XX

I can't say that I've traveled that far and returned the same night in my adult life. When I was a kid, my mom's brother and his wife and kids moved about 4-6 hours away (depending on how fast you drive and traffic conditions). They moved to Coastal Georgia, and we live in the Metro area. My mom would get me and my sister up at 3 a.m. and drive down there for the day, take us to the beach and shopping in the tourist areas, spend some time with our cousins, and then get back home around 11 p.m. The worst turn-around travel I've done in my adulthood was for my honeymoon. My husband and I married on a Saturday, received checks in large amounts to take on our honeymoon, but had to wait until Monday to cash them. So we left out on Monday about 9 a.m., stayed overnight, went to some places the next day, then left Tuesday evening to come home, cause my husband had to be at work again on Wednesday. The trip was more exhausting than restful!

What a honeymoon. Must have been frustrating. I hope that you've made up for it since. I have been further but it certainly isn't usual.

I've driven to Houston - also 3 hours, for a lunch with friends and home. One time, the former roomie, a friend and I took a road trip. We left Austin, drove to Killeen (about 90 minutes), then drove to Arlington (about another 3 and a half hours) then home (4 hours direct driving.) We had a good time.

I got attracted to this discussion because you mentioned singapore. So your sister in law is singaporean? that makes two of us! hope you enjoyed your dinner after that long ride... I don't recall having to travel so far for dinner, mostly because Singapore is tiny anyway, which I'm sure you know, especially if you've ever been to visit her. driving from one end of the country to another only takes 1.5 hours at most. ;)

My sister in law is English but she lives there along with her English husband who is working there. We are visiting in September and can't wait to see the sights.

My in laws live 2 hours away. We go there for visits. Holidays pop up, the ocassional birthday. We don't really travel further than that in one day. With a four year old in the back seat, even that can be an adventure.

I think that is far enough for one day. I can imgagine the adventure though. When our daughter was four I used to get heartily sick of "I spy" or the music to "The wheels on the bus.."

Hello My P1ke! Well this isn't something i like to talk about since this was back in my wild days..LOL..I used to go with my girlfriend to her house in San diego calif. about 3 hours away too from my house and we would get together with her boyfriend and someone for me..well food was involved..LOL..and then after i would have to get back to my house for work the next day or even a matter of hours depending on how long i stayed! Hope you got some rest!

Wow, I have never went that far for a night out. We live 10 miles from town and 13 and 27 to the next closest towns but I have never went to them just for dinner out it was always running errands also. I don't get out much anyhow. I don't know if I would drive a six hour round trip just to eat and visit. I would end up staying the night and catching up and then leave in the morning.
@p1kef1sh (45681)

I would have preferred to stay over. But my wife had to work the next morning so we had little option. It is quite unusual for us to do that kind of thing. Thank goodness.

P1 I am sorry but I once did a 7 hour round drive and I will never do that again lol and that was 6 years ago But then again in my job I was more on the road I guess driving a Day average would have been between 4-7 hours every Day but it never bothered me then lol but no I would not do it now as it is hard when I go to see the Kids and that is 3 1/2 there but I stay for a few Days and then head back so that does not count lol I bet you where shattered

Honest it never bothered me I loved the job and still had my time with my Kids at night sometimes I would be out from 6am till 8pm travelling from one contract to another in between to the office and that was 5 Days a week on the road I loved the job I was so active then at weekend I cleaned washed and all that and it never bothered me that is why it is so hard for me even now after 6 years to adjust to this now You better rest for a couple of Days and get fit again Hugs xx

Gosh Gabs I used to have a driving job and never went that far without an overnight. You must have been worn out. Then you probably had to be back on the road the next day. I am feeling tired now I admit. Shan't be late to bed tonight.

I travel 100 miles (two hous) to my ather's house on Christmas day, and return home with relaties in the evening. It is nice to see everyone, but I'd rather go home than spend the night wih all of those people. Too many people in one place drives me nuts!

a couple of years ago, I used to do the same trip as you. my daughter was away at school which was a 3 hour drive and I'd quite often go up to see her or to bring her home for a couple of days. Regardless, it was always a 6 hour adventure or more,,,usually more. the travel time alone was 6 hours. I used to return home so so tired out but those were some of my fondest memories...no regrets.

I have done a seven hour round trip .. I go and see my brother and talk with my mother and get some shopping done and a meal and hang out and come home the very same day just because I have kids and my other half would like it if I could only make it a day. LOL!! I don't do this often with gas prices being as they are now. But I use to do it every other weekend back in 1997-1998. LOL!!!

Sometimes yes sometimes no. depends on the mood my mom is in when I get there and how ticked I am by the time I leave. Me and my mom are like oil and water. we can't seem to be in the same area for a long period of time. LOL!! Also another reason why I take only a day trip. Unless I have some one with me to buffer or defuse a situation I mainly do day trips. LOL!!!

i really havent done that just to travel for long hours to have dinner with ..but i guess in your part its all worth it since its your sister you had dinner with ..especially if shes leaving abroad or in a far place..you too must be very close as sisters..
@p1kef1sh (45681)

We are close but we aren't sisters. She is my sister in law - and I'm male. LOL. It was certainly worth it. She rang yesterday to say how pleased she was that we had made the effort. That made it even better.

Afternoon pike, Well it is not your afternoon, but it is mine :)))) I am pretty lucky in that in any direction an hour and half will get me to a major city. So its pretty easy to do a night out and drive home. I was trying to push my memory banks back further to see if there was a place when have lived that we had to drive further, but the bank was closed and would not allow me a withdrawal.

I've only ever have driven about an hour and a half to a place, and then the same amount of time home. I really couldn't justify it with the price of gas being the way that it is to drive any further than that. Hell, I couldn't even justify the three hour round trip to my Fiance!
@p1kef1sh (45681)

Gas here is $8 a gallon! I don't normally do such drives and I am feeling it now. No late night for me tonight. But w don't often see my sister in law so it was worth the trip.

I can't think of anywhere specific that I have gone far away to visit just for the day. My husband and I go exploring and get lost. We end up gone the whole day...or we did before gas prices became astronomical. When I was 18 I got married and moved from Michigan to Ohio. One way was around 4 hours. My friend used to drive down just to spend the night with me then turn around and go back the next day.
@p1kef1sh (45681)
21 May 08
I love getting lost, but don't do it so much these days. Gas prices here are double yours! I couldn't do an 8 hour drive in one day I think that your friend was very sensible to stay the night. Except I bet that you sat up all night chatting.

I have been known to travel 2 hours just to eat a sushi roll and then head back home. But I only make this insane trip once or twice a year now. My honey has curbed my cravings for sushi by buying me my very own sushi making kit complete with rich, steamer, and cheese cloth. I made it once. It was nearly a disaster. I say nearly because I compensated as much as I could and still managed to eat half of the plate I made.

Get him to get you a Japanese chef to go with it. You'll soon be in business. I don't ever care if I mess up a dish. If it is still edible, I bill it as "interesting" and scoff it nevertheless.

I had to think on that one.Everything is so close here' in Orange County where one town pretty much merges into another. I think the furthest we used to travel was when I was a kid and my parents would drive from our home town a little town, to a huge lol one of some fifty thousand people, about a four hour trip. we would shop and eat out, specially at' one little hole in the wall mom and pop hamburger shop that made the best hamburgers I had ever tasted. Even the modern shops could not compare to their hamburgers. they were enormous on home made bread with real dill pickles. as old as I am now I can still remember just how tasty they were. we would drive back the same evening. And we usally had some of my mom's homemade 'beef stew for a late supper and it was always so good lol.
@p1kef1sh (45681)
21 May 08
Hamburgers followed by stew. You must have all been fit little Hatleys with all that protein. LOL. That's a fair distance though. I wish those sorts of places existed still, maybe they do, I've just not found them yet. If I want a really good hamburger I have to sweet talk my wife. She usually gives in to me.
