With the holidays looming I am trying to think of things to do to keep my son entertained that isn't going to cost a fortune so I will start with the obvious one for me as I live near the beach. 1. Beach - entrance free. Picnic (food and drink from home) and bucket spade and ball and a day on the beach. Cost minimal. £1.35 for bus ride home. 2. Walk to the park with stale bread for the ducks, take food and drink from home, play on the swings and slides, take ball. Entrance free cost £0.00 Have you any idea yourself that will keep them enterntained at minimal cost and also so bad weather day projects that can be done. All age group of children but mine is four. Please share. Ellie :D

My kids are both teens now but there are things like going for walks in the neighbourhood, playing with sidewalk chalk, arts & crafts can be VERY cheap and great for rainy days as is movie/snuggle time...check your local library to see if they have free fun sessions for kids too...

Thank you I will check out the local library. We have an art box and also do cake making on rainy days too but I like the idea of a movie and a snuggle sounds good to me. Thanks for sharing. Ellie :D

There always great activities for teens. I would say that those stuff you mentioned are great for teens to have on their free time. If it's rainy they would go to a friends' house to do certain activities there.

Ellie..do you have a garden to teach him to plant things? How about a library for storytime?..they do it here and it has puppet shows and stories free. You could do this at your own home too. There is a nature park here to walk through, look at things and act like you are in a hidden world..maybe play act things with him and let him take charge. have fun!

Hi Rosekitty, he loves nature and animals so I do quite often go for walks, we take two bags, one for picking up litter and one for his treasures which can be anything from a leaf, a feather to a pretty stone. We have lots of seeds on the windowsill frowing at the moment but only have a concret yard outside so that bit a bit difficult. Thanks for sharing these ides. I will get down to the library and see what is available. Ellie :D

We like to go to the public library! You can rent dvds, video tapes and books! There are also events every now and then, and often the library is near a playground! It takes a few hours for us to get there by bus and back, and there are also computers for the kids to use!

No problem! Many libraries have a summer reading program for children, even preschoolers who cannot read! The parents can read for them or they can watch a video if they are challenged! Our libraries give prizes for a certain number of hours reading, or for a certain number of books read! The prizes may include a free meal at a restaurant, free admission to a zoo or museum, and stuff like that! There are also events, each library has their own kick-off event sometimes with ice cream socials! There is usually no charge! have fun!

Thank you Nupats for sharing these idea. I am sure he would love to paint the stones he has collected as he has many of these treasures already. It would be good for him to make cards too as he loves to get creative. I always go out at least once a day for a walk or to the park so this we will do also. Ellie :D

Well, I can think of lots of free stuff that you can do with kids on your free time; especially on weekends and holidays. How about swimming? Dancing; the kids style for fun will be great. Take them out for ice cream is another suggestion. I would take them out to go for walks. That is all I could think of.

Hi Jaksnake, yes a nature walk is a fantastic idea as it teaches them to respect their environment around them. When I take my son for a walk I take two bags with me, one for collecting up litter we find along they way and the other for his little treasures which may be a feather or a leaf or a pretty stone or an acorn or somehting. It is also good to get out and spot the different wildlife too eh! Thank you for sharing your ideas and your input into this discussion. Ellie :D

Hi there! Why not try making a so-called "Holiday Camp" at your house with your kids. It's like you can do various activities with your kids and stuff. Like teaching them how to cook, clean and the like. You can also have a dvd marathon at home. All you have to do is rent or borrow dvds and then you're all set. Inexpensive indeed.

My daughter is twelve now, but I used to go through this every summer. We would do the beach, parks, zoo and aquarium, but you need some other things too. If you live where you can have a pool this is fantastic and will keep him occupied for many days and you can relax yourself, just don't forget the sunblock. We used to bake, sugar cookies are great because they can decorate them even at that age. Making playdough was fun. Movies and board games for rainy days. Playdates are always good. Any kind of crafts they can handle, make a scrapbook. Something as simple as melting crayons together to make multiple colors can be fun for kids that age. We used to do what we called "bad hair days," get out some gel and let him go at it (your hair and his.) Buy a soccer ball or kickball, that is fun all summer. A walk everyday is a good way to get out of the house and let him burn some energy. Another thing to do is look at everyday things and find ways to make them fun. A race to see who can clean up the most in a certain amount of time gets them to help and makes it fun. Let him help make simple lunches. It's messy, but you can even make cleaning up part of the fun. It can be difficult to fill the days, but if you think outside the box it makes it much easier.

I love the idea of the melting crayons that is excellent and also the bad hair days. I used to let my girls make creations with my hair now I come to think about it when they where little so there is not reason why he can't have fun with it too eh! I always walk everyday as a boy he seems to have so much more energy than my girls ever had! You saying about the clearing up I did that yesterday we were messing with a soft ball indoors and every kick he had to pick up a card that he'd left on the floor, picked up in no time LOL so thats a really good one. Thanks for sharing your ides I really appreciate it. Ellie :D
