I would like to say that I am not superstitious. But I avoid walking under ladders. I try not to break mirrors, because that would be messy. I also don't open umbrellas inside of a building. I don't honestly think something bad will happen, but just in case I avoid doing these things.

I worked with a girl who wouldn't "split the pole", she would walk around to your side if you came up to a pole on the street. Poor girl.

There have been times in my life I might have been considered Superstitious and avoided certain things and dates, but anymore it is just another day. My husband and I celebrated our 10 yr. Wedding anniversary on the 13th of Feb and it was a Friday this yr. and things are still going Great, so I think it is a matter of your way of thinking for sure.

I used to work in a building that didn't have a 13th floor and I would get on and ask where the 13 floor was, people always freaked out. I can see why your date would be freaky but you're right, its just another day.

I am not. Last Friday the 13th I walked under a ladder, broke a mirror, spilled some salt and kicked a black cat and nothing happened to me. Maybe that is why I have thirteen toes?

I delete chain letters, I walk under ladders, I break mirrors, black cats have crossed my path millions of times over the years...no harm has ever come to me.

not to the point where i have to forward every text message, email, etc.
But I do try to avoid Friday the 13th, I do only pick up pennies with the heads up, I do throw salt over my shoulder, and I do believe that when a brrom falls for no apparent reason that company is coming, oh and the right hand itching is getting money and left losing money (vice versa if you are predominatly a lefty.)
If your ears ring someone is talking about you and if it burns they are talking bad about you.
still not clear about your nose itching, whether you will kiss a fool or someone is coming to see you.
who knows...but it adds flavor to life.

IN some way, yes..I grew up believing something for no explanation or reason given to me clearly. I tried to avoid things like breaking mirrors etc. I don't read any chain letters, since they have said when you don't read it you don't need to follow it, and the like.. I know there is no proof to all of these but I just avoid it!

That's okay, after while it becomes comical and you wonder why it mattered at all.

I think I am. I mean, I was just afraid like there's this chain letter that if you don't pass it, you'll have a 10 years bad luck..hello?!?!? there's nothing wrong if you'll pass it.. I was just afraid..what that's true?..and here in our country, there are lots of superstitions. that some of it are true. so better to do that.. there's nothing wrong if you'll do that.

Ha, funny. I use to work in a building in KC, MO and it didn't have a floor number 13, it went from 12 to 14, the building was old of course. I use to get on and ask why there was no floor number 13, I would say, "A guy asked me to meet him on the 13th floor, how am I supposed to get there when there's no number 13?" That would pretty much clear the elevator. I'm so bad.

I'm superstitious in a way but not to the extreme.. Walking under the ladder and breaking a mirror, i will choose to believe than not as if it's true, i will have 7 yrs of bad luck and it's a really long period of time.. hehe.. As for the others, i wun really bother so much about it, and i will just take it as concidental..

No I am not really, I always check that something is not going to be dropped from the top of the ladder if I walk under one which is probably the reason why they say it is unlucky and the Friday the 13th has never really bothered me either, but for some strange reason I will always salute and say hello if I happen to see just one magpie! Weird really when I say I am not superstitious don't you think. Ellie :D

Okay, let me grab the salt to answer this one. Just kidding. I'm not superstitious at all. I do not believe in all that stuff. I like to learn the origins of sayings, just some stupid thing I like to do. It's trivia to me and I love all things trivial..lol. Walking under a ladder could be dangerous because whoever is over you could possibly drop something on your head so it makes sense to create a superstition to deter people from doing this. As for chain letters, what better way to get you to pass them on than to tell you that you will have bad luck if you don't? King Philip IV of France had all the Templar Knights arrested on the morning of Friday the 13th so he could take over their wealth. Ever since Friday the 13th is considered bad luck.
The funny thing is, I know all these things and I am not superstitious, but was raised in a house and around people who are superstitious, so every once in a while I catch myself knocking on wood or something like that and I feel soooo silly for doing it.

That's funny, I forgot about the wood thing. I'm usually knocking on plastic, or formica or partical boards. Pretty neat that you researched the origins, I never knew about King Philip IV, thanks for the lesson.

No not at all. I used to be when I was child only because my parents would scare the crap out of me about those silly superstitions.

I don't believe in these superstitions myself, maybe partly because of the culture. We don't emphasize on those things. But I think I partly believe the existing of supernatural beings.

I've never geen superstitious. But just in case... nah, just kidding.
I believe that if you worry about something happening to you because of a superstition, you may very well bring about the thing you worry about, subconsciously. I believe in the power of positive thinking. It has done wonders for me so, in the opposite respect, negative thinking can bring about negative things.

I agree with the previous post. Once you know why something started you won't have the inclination to be scared of certain things. Well unless you are a templar with a wooden leg then you need to watch out what you are doing! Just kidding. What I wanted to add was that sometimes it's just common sense too. For example the warning not to walk underneath a ladder. Heck that's just plain common sense because you can get splattered with paint. Or hit on the head with something the person on the ladder may inadvertently drop. So it's just a good idea to not to walk under ladders in the first place.
