I never thought

For years I went to Wal-Mart because I truly enjoyed going there and thought I was saving my family money. My husband didn't like it because I shopped there but that is a lengthy story so I won't go into it right now. I finally quit going there shortly before Christmas. I never thought that I would find somewhere else to shop that would save my family more money. I told my husband that if I ever did I would quit going to Wal-Mart. Well, low and behold, there is a grocery store chain in my area called Foodland. There is one about eight miles from where we lilve. My mother and I started shopping there shortly before Christmas along with the Dollar General Store which is right next door. Amazingly I found that I could save $40 to $50 per week on groceries for my family going to these two different places!!! My groceries still add up because there are four of us, but it is still better than what it was. What about you? Have you found anywhere that you can shop that saves you more money than at Wal-Mart?

You got me on that one. I really thought that wal-mart was the cheapest you could go for some things. I guess that is why they say that you have to shop around sometimes before making a final choice.

I know what you mean. I really thought I was doing better too until I started shopping elsewhere. I think the thing that helps the most is the 5 1/2 percent sales tax because at Wal-Mart I always had to pay 8 percent. But I have definitely saved money and with gas as high as it is it is better too because I only have to drive about seven miles to get to the store and Wal-Mart is further. Take care!!

I was in our local 99 cent store the other day. I was saying to myself that this was about to become one of the most popular stores in California. With everything becoming so high, we really can appreciate the discount stores these days. I guess as long as you are not having to put in too much gas going back and forth, it is worth it. There is no Wal-Mart close enough for me to shop at, but I do find some good bargains at their online site.

I haven't shopped with them on line Rozie, I need to check them out some time. Maybe I can find something cheaper than in the stores. But their prices are definitely higher than when I first started shopping there in the stores.

I get a good portion of my meat from a buying organization. Once a month they have a package, and it is a minimal amount, plus you need to have done one hour of volunteer work. That can be Sunday School, or choir, or babysitting for free, or picking up trash when you walk. I usually get about five kinds of meat, and then four or five fruits and veggies. Sometimes there are treats, like a dessert. My next favorite shopping is Dillons, it is a store from the Kroger family. If you spend 100 dollars there in a month, you get a coupon for 10 cents off per gallon of gas. They double coupons, and if you bring your own bags, they give you a nickel off. If I go out of town it is to Sam's Club or Aldi's. Aldi's is a lot like a Sav A Lot, I am sure.

Well, Aldi's does save me money, but they only take cash, no checks or credit or debit cards. They also don't have everything I need. It would save me some money by getting things like cleaning supplies there, but as for food I have not found a place cheaper than Walmart.

Hi Amber! We have one of those stores in our area but it is in the next county so it wouldn't do me any good to shop there either by the time I have to use the gas to drive over there. I don't like the fact they don't take checks either. I use a debit card most of the time now but I still want the option of using a check if I want. Take care hon!!!

iga store sign - This is what the IGA store sign looks like.
I too, have decided that shopping at the local dollar general store saves us money. 1st of all the nearest walmart is 16 miles away, dollar general is 1/2 a mile from my house and with gas prices, you all know how that is. For our cold foods, meats and produce that dollar general doesn't have, I have been shopping at our local small grocery store, which they have the best meat around, people come from other towns just to get their meat. Our local grocery store (IGA) has new owners now and has been having some really good sells...just as good or even better than the bigger known grocery store chains. Also, our local grocery store is starting a gas cash program with one of our local gas stations here in town, I am pretty excited about that, one more way to save more money. I think that walmart sometimes has some great deals but most of the time when I go there for groceries I feel that I am not getting much for the amount I have to pay. I also do not like the fact that I use coupons that I print out from online and walmart will not accept them...and Walmart doesn't double the value of the coupons. Have a great day!

You know Nelly, the store we have started going to, Foodland, also has much better looking meats than Wal-Mart, and they are a lot cheaper also. I know that Wal-Mart will match the other stores if you have the sale paper, but if you have to buy other things that aren't on sale those sale papers don't help a lot when the price is a lot higher. I'm glad I finally listened to my husband, and wish I had listened to him a lot sooner.
